New York Governor Race…Cuomo tells Gays he Will Legalize Same-Sex Marriage

New York’s
race for governor

has been dominated by state Attorney General and democrat Andrew Cuomo, and Buffalo businessman and Tea Party-backed Republican, Carl Paladino.

As we all know, Paladino is EXTREMELY Homophobic! He is petrified of gay men in bathing suits grinding up against each other! He has called us “disgusting dysfunctional homosexuals!”  yet  also says, “”My feelings on homosexuality are unequivocal; I have absolutely no problem with it whatsoever.”  WTF?!

Obviously, no gay in their right mind will vote for him.

MEANWHILE, Andrew Cuomo says,“I don’t want to be the governor who just proposes marriage equality. I don’t want to be the governor who lobbies for marriage equality. I don’t want to be the governor who fights for marriage equality. I want to be the governor who signs the law that makes equality a reality in the state of New York,” said the Democratic nominee.

The declaration is “music to our ears,” one activist said.

The Paladino campaign has been in high damage-control mode since last week, when the candidate made what many considered highly offensive remarks about gays during a visit with Orthodox Jewish leaders in Brooklyn. He has since apologized for those remarks while maintaining his stance against gay marriage.

“Take nothing for granted because people are afraid, people are anxious and these forces are looking to exploit that,” Cuomo said.
The attorney general called Paladino’s remarks about gays “alarming and divisive and negative,” but declined to say how his daughters felt about them — particularly Paladino’s criticism that the girls should not have been allowed to accompany their dad to this summer’s pride parade.

Mayor Bloomberg, making his first appearance at the event in years, vowed to the audience, “I will fight with you until we achieve marriage equality for all New Yorkers” as Judy Garland tunes played in the background!

Margaret Talbot Takes Stock of the latest Advances and Setbacks in the Fight for Gay Rights

This week Margaret Talbot did a great piece in the New Yorker  called PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

She says, “In the past few weeks, it has been easy to forget that Americans are becoming more accepting of gays and lesbians and of their rights to equal citizenship…

…then we had the remarks of Carl Paladino, the Republican gubernatorial candidate in New York, who said in a speech before Orthodox Jewish rabbis that children should not be “brainwashed” into thinking that homosexuality is “an equally valid and successful option.” Given an opportunity to elaborate on “Good Morning America” and the “Today” show, Paladino described gay-pride parades as “disgusting”; denounced his rival, Andrew Cuomo, for taking his children, aged twelve and fifteen, to the gay-pride parade in New York City; and declared his hostility to same-sex marriage.

You don’t have to argue for any kind of equivalency between, say, the lynching of three gay men and the intemperate remarks of a politician to acknowledge that, in the use of a word like “disgusting,” something ugly and fundamental is being revealed, the id in the ideology.”

She goes on to talk about the gay teen suicides and the more that our acceptance wins—and it is winning—the more angry obstructionism we’ll see from people who still can’t accept it. Clearly, tolerance has hit a few snags, some more serious than others.

Gay Same Sex Couples Can Now Jointly Adpot Under New York Law

Gov. David Paterson
signed into law yesterday a new measure that allows unmarried partners, including gay couples, to adopt.

Gay New Yorkers STILL CAN’T MARRY!

But this new law permits unmarried partners, including gay couples, to adopt. The new adoption statute also changes the gender-specific term “husband and wife” to the gender-neutral term “married couple,” according to the New York Post. This change recognizes the right of same-sex couples legally married elsewhere to adopt.

Prior to the new law, gay individuals were permitted to adopt, but now adopted children are entitled to support, insurance and other benefits from both adults.

Ground Zero Mosque Moves Forward…Dealing with Prejudice, Forgivness, Islamphobia and More

The September 11th attacks (often referred to as  9/11 ) happened nine years ago today. Everyone is blogging about it, everyone has an opinion.

Many words come to mind today…sadnesss, hurt, hate, prejudice,  forgiveness, injustice, empathy, Islampohobia…I could go on and on. Our experiences and what we do with them shape and determine our trajectory. Often, they change us gradually; sometimes, they are immediately life altering. Everyone was affected in different ways.

The Islamic community that hopes to build a $100 million mosque and Islamic center near Ground Zero has cleared an important hurdle – approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission to build on the site.

But that approval – which was expected – is not likely to end the controversy about whether the site of the mosque is offensive to people who lost their loved ones on 9/11 or whether the Islamic community has the right to build a place of religious worship where they want.

The issue has taken on national proportions  with Republicans such as Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich coming out in opposition to the mosque. It has become a part of the governor’s race in New York with Republican Rick Lazio opposed to it and Attorney General Andrew Cuomo in favor.

On his blog today, Michael Moore  said, “I am opposed to the building of the “mosque” two blocks from Ground Zero.
I want it built on Ground Zero.  Why? Because I believe in an America that protects those who are the victims of hate and prejudice. I believe in an America that says you have the right to worship whatever God you have, wherever you want to worship. And I believe in an America that says to the world that we are a loving and generous people and if a bunch of murderers steal your religion from you and use it as their excuse to kill 3,000 souls, then I want to help you get your religion back. And I want to put it at the spot where it was stolen from you.

There’s been so much that’s been said about this manufactured controversy, I really don’t want to waste any time on this day of remembrance talking about it. But I hate bigotry and I hate liars….Blaming a whole group for the actions of just one of that group is anti-American.Timothy McVeigh was Catholic. Should Oklahoma City prohibit the building of a Catholic Church near the site of the former federal building that McVeigh blew up?”

DIGNITY FOR ALL STUDENTS! Gov Paterson Signs Act To Protect

Charles Robbins, Executive Director of The Trevor Project, the nation’s leading organization focused on crisis intervention and suicide prevention for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth, made the following statement in response to Governor David Paterson’s signing into law the inclusive Dignity for All Students Act in New York:

“Today, Governor Paterson signed into law an assurance of protection from bullying and harassment for all students, regardless of real or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and expression, and sex in publicly funded schools in New York.

The law would make New York one of more than 40 states with anti-bullying laws, 14 of which plus the District of Columbia provide inclusive protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. When youth are threatened at school, or their property gets stolen at school, and they fight at school, the odds that they will attempt suicide more than double. Considering more than half of sexual minority youth in schools have been verbally harassed and one in ten is physically assaulted, the Dignity for All Students Act with the inclusion of gender identity and expression will be a giant step to reducing instances of self-harm and suicide that result from harassment by school peers.”

The Trevor Project is the leading national organization focused on crisis intervention and suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQ youth. Every day, The Trevor Project saves young lives through its free and confidential lifeline, in-school workshops, educational materials, online resources and advocacy. The organization was founded in 1998 by three filmmakers whose film, “Trevor,” a comedy/drama about a gay teenager who attempts suicide, received the 1994 Academy Award® for Best Short Film (Live Action). TRANSFORMATION: Photography by Mike Ruiz August 25-28

YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS the photography of Mike Ruiz at the Leslie/Lohman Gallery  in NYC this week!

 August 26-28.
Opening reception: Wednesday
August 25, 6 – 9 pm

The celebrity / fashion photographer – and star of the upcoming reality show The A-List: New York  – will be unveiling his latest solo exhibit “Transformations,” a work representing celebrities alter egos, as interpreted by the photographer himself.

Best known for making celebrities almost unrecognizable in his edgy and futuristic photographs, Ruiz  has found a way to repackage stardom with his camera lens. With a client list that any casting director would envy, Ruiz is a familiar face thanks to appearances on ‘Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List,’ ‘America’s Next Top Model’ and ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ as both photographer and guest judge.

In an interview with POPEATER he discusses the proces…

It is usually collaborative. Obviously they need to be aware of what I’m doing ahead of time, although, Kim Kardashian had no idea. She walked into the studio and I said, ‘OK look, this is what we’re doing.’ I was on pins and needles until she agreed to it, but she’s pretty cool, she’s pretty invaluable that way. We were working with a really solid team that she knew from before, and I had worked with her before, so she trusted me.

Usually, I do have a contact, I gotta run it by the publicist so they’re cool with it. But these days, because of the wild success of the shoots I did with Kim Kardashian, Lance Bass or Adam Lambert, publicists are coming to me for that reason. They know they’re gonna get some wild transformation. It’s less of a struggle now because they know that’s what they’re getting and if that’s not what they want, to not even start a dialogue.”

A portion of all net proceeds from exhibit sales will go to the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation , an outlet for art work that is unambiguously gay and which is frequently denied access to mainstream venues.

Counterfeit Condom Bust in New York

When it comes to counterfeit smuggling rings, the images that come to mind are generally knock-off handbags or ”Rolox” watches sold on street corners. It might be time to conjure up a new image, one that has less to do with fashion houses and more to do with sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.

Earlier this summer The New York Times reported that brothers Lin F. Hu and Jian Lin Hu pleaded guilty to smuggling into the United States counterfeit items such as bags, clothes and sunglasses, from China. According to the Times, the counterfeit smuggling ring made millions from selling the items with Disney, Nike and North Face brand names among them. Nothing out of the ordinary there.

But these rogue entrepreneurs were also holding half a million counterfeit condoms, packaged as Trojan brand condoms and lubricated with vegetable oil. Though the Hu siblings did not admit to taking part in smuggling the condoms, the find is evidence that there must be a market for fake prophylactics.

Robert Nardoza, public affairs officer for the United States Attorney’s Office Eastern District of New York, said he believes some of those condoms may have made it to the market, but he could not comment further on such details as to where and when.

Counterfeit condoms underscore the importance of having free condoms available.

”When you have counterfeited items, like your Louis Vuitton bags and what have you, at the end of the day, that’s not great. But here, when one’s life is put at risk….This has real implications in that it undermines the public’s trust in these products.”

Miss New York 2010 Claire Buffie Campaigns on Gay Rights Platform

Miss New York 2010
Claire Buffie
is the first Miss America contestant in the 90-year history of the pageant to run on a gay rights platform. Plum TV caught up with Buffie at the Empire State Pride Agenda’s annual Hampton’s Tea Dance.

Claire is an outspoken advocate of human rights, opening the dialogue about equality amongst youth, teens and adults alike with her platform “Straight for Equality: Let’s Talk.” The issues of gay rights make up the civil rights movement of our generation and reach far beyond marriage equality.

As Miss New York 2010, Claire aims to break the stigma of marginalized youth, eliminating discriminatory vocabulary and changing the climate in New York schools. She celebrates diversity and the things that make us all unique and strives to instill pride, dignity and respect in developing minds and compassionate hearts. This will be a year of change in New York State and Claire is ready to support this incredible movement.

Says Buffie: “I feel like gay rights are the civil rights movement of my generation, and I think it’s really important to have straight ally support because any time you want to effect a change with a minority you have to have support from the majority, and I’m that voice now…My older sister Sarah is a lesbian, but in addition to her, I grew up in the performing arts. So many of my friends are LGBT, and it’s my duty as a straight ally to represent them.”

Ex- Madam Kristin Davis WILL RUN for Governor of New York

Kristin Davis ,

formerly known as the Manhattan Madam who supplied high priced call- girls for Eliot Spitzer when he was Governor and Attorney General announced today that she would run for governor as the candidate of the Anti-Prohibition Party (APP).

She had previously considered the Free Libertarian Party and the Reform Party labels but rejected both although neither is recognized in New york State as a party.

We need to legalize marijuana, gay marriage and casino gambling by ending the Prohibition on them,” said Davis.

“It’s time to end the Government prohibition on Marijuana and tax it for the public benefit,” said Davis. “It’s time to end the prohibition on gay marriage and it’s time to end the prohibition of casino gambling.”

“It’s also time to end the government prohibition of prostitution in order to drive those who exploit women and utilize drugs out of the business and to protect the public safety as well as filling the public coffers by taxing it,” said Davis, a former hedge fund Vice President.

Davis was convicted of promoting prostitution and spent four months in prison before becoming a feminist, libertarian activist and advocate for a freedom based agenda that includes legalizing pot, prostitution and casino gambling to bring new revenues to New York.” These are the best alternatives to higher and higher taxes on the people of our state,” said Davis.

Davis requires 15,000 valid voter signatures to get her Anti-prohibition campaign on the ballot. If Davis and the Anti-Prohibition party get 50,000 votes they would win permanent ballot status until the next gubernatorial election and could run candidates for state and federal office in 2012.

Macys Amazing Fourth of July Fireworks

W O W !
That had to be the MOST AMAZING  FIREWORKS  display I have ever seen!

Budget cuts have forced some communities  around the country to pull the plug on the pyrotechnics, but the gigantic Macy’s fireworks show  continued on Manhattan’s West Side, where it moved in 2009 after eight years on the East River. And that move has brought with it a change in fortune for businesses, too.

In the city that’s home to the $1,000 umbrella and the $175 cheeseburger, tickets have been sold at $1,450 a pair for one sweet spot to see the fireworks that are free for anyone standing on a nearby street corner or at a window.

Hudson Terrace, a rooftop bar near the river, sold 250 tickets to watch the fireworks at prices from $150 to $1,450 a couple.

It is estimated  4,000,000-5,000,000  watched  the display live  in NYC!

The fireworks show will relocate to the Statue of Liberty next year in honor of Lady Liberty’s 125th anniversary and will move around after that.

I have read that they used 36,000 shells (what most of us call fireworks) and was the largest display in America, exploding 1000 fireworks per minute.  I have also read estimates the display could have cost $500,000.
Other estimates I read ran  $5 – 7 MILLION.
I don’t know.  Anyone  know  ??
