Googles Guide to Lesbian & Gay New York Historical Landmarks

DID YOU KNOW –
Google has this cool gay  map!
All the information in this map is courtesy of the Organization of
Lesbian + Gay Architects and Designers (OLGAD) and was originally
developed by its Preservation + History Committee. A note regarding
format: where evidence indicates an individual’s being lesbian or gay,
the name is in boldface (it is necessary to take into account cultural
and historical context—for instance, a number of these people were
married, even though research points to their involvement in same-sex
relationships.)
Finally, please remember that many of the sites
highlighted here are privately owned and are not open to the
public—please respect people’s privacy. Project Coordinators: James P.
Colgate and Jane Greenwood. Research and Text: Joan Berkowitz, Don
Dinkel, Jr., Andrew Dolkart, Gale Harris, Mary Jablonski, Ken Lustbader,

New York Ex Con Gets His Wish – And gets Sentenced to 10 years, for Sneaking into the Jail

Stranger than Fiction!  This guy just can’t get enough jail time.  When he is out, he sneaks back in. Repeatedly!

A convicted sex offender who repeatedly used phony correction
department credentials to gain entry into New York City jails has been
sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Matthew Matagrano was sentenced
Thursday. The 36-year-old Yonkers resident pleaded guilty last month to
posing as a correction officer and sneaking into the Manhattan Detention
Center, where he mingled with inmates for hours.

During a Feb. 27
visit Matagrano assaulted an inmate and stole a $2,500 walkie-talkie.
He also handed out cigarettes to inmates.

Matagrano’s rap sheet includes a conviction for sodomy and sexual
abuse. Police statements released in court report Matagrano said he
repeatedly sneaked into jails because the people inside were “nice” and
made him “feel important.”

WE Party: AIRLINES Flies Into New York City

This Labor Day weekend, the greatest party in the world is flying into the greatest city in the world for a once-in-a-lifetime special event.  WE Party: Airlines lands into New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom on Saturday August 31st from 10pm – 6am.  The legendary concert hall will literally be transformed into an airport with check-in counters, gates, concessions, and special lounges.  Also inside will be the world’s most spectacular mega club complete with six points of line array concert sound, hundreds of moving lights, full color lasers, 3d LED visual walls and stunning performances direct from Spain.  WE Party’s residents DJ’s take their first flight together in the USA:  Spain’s hottest export  Manuel de Diego joins NYC’s own superstar Brett Henrichsen in the cockpit to provide the beats for the flight.  Thousands of party-goers are coming in from around the world to spend a night flying on WE Party Airlines.

“This will be the first time New Yorkers will actually enjoy going through security,” promises Victor Pallas of WE Party Madrid. “Once past the friendly T&A Screening, passengers can choose between stepping into the pressurized, climate controlled cabin and embarking on the flight of a lifetime, or relaxing in the Mile High Club airport lounge for some special on the ground services.   In both areas, specially trained flight attendants will attend to the every need of passengers, before, during and after departure.”

The Hammerstein Ballroom is a three-tiered, 12,000-square-foot ballroom located within the Manhattan Center Studios on 311 West 34th Street in Manhattan.  It was constructed in 1906 by Oscar Hammerstein and originally named the Manhattan Opera House. It became the Manhattan Center Studios in 1986, and in 1997, after undergoing extensive renovation, with the hand painted ceiling being completely restored, it was renamed Hammerstein Ballroom.  In recent years, the venue has hosted several large concert events for major pop artists including Kylie Minogue, Patti LaBelle and Rihanna as well as a massive dance event for Tiesto.  Several seasons of NBC’s America’s Got Talent have also been taped at the theatre.

“The last time a dance event of similar magnitude was produced at Hammerstein was Victor Calderone’s landmark Caligula pride event in 2001,” states Mike Singer from Masterbeat, the company producing the event. Caligula featured a full symphony orchestra accompanying Cyndi Lauper as she sang her classic hit, True Colors.   “We are planning to re-introduce NYC to this spectacular venue and for this Labor Day event to be the biggest WE Party ever produced in the entire world.”

Founded in Madrid in 2008, WE Party is known as the Rolls Royce of event experiences from Ibiza to Los Angeles, Moscow to Zurich – and, now – New York.  The organization has raised the stakes on nightlife with over-the-top productions offering sensory overload of sight and sound. Each party aims to outdo the last, combining hi tech staging, cutting edge shows, and steamy international dancers with the most stunning crowds. Its groundbreaking use of lighting, lasers and LED, alongside custom made visuals, has been called a visual feast for clubbers.   WE Airlines debuted at La Riviera in Madrid and is making its first international flight to Manhattan.

Now in its 15th year, the Masterbeat brand produces highly popular dance events throughout the United States, including its annual series of New Year’s Eve extravaganzas in Los Angeles, the largest gay New Years event in the country.

Additional flight information and tickets are available now at WE Airlines website: www.wepartyairlines.com.   Passengers can choose between economy and first class fares, each with their own special amenity packages and access to special areas of the plane.

Tony Moran brings DESTINATION experience to XL Nightclub

On Saturday, August 24th, Destination embarks on a
mission to recapture the greatness of the New York City dance floor.

 “I respect
and love all of the Ibiza parties that have been circling the globe with their
events but we are now taking back control of the American dance floor,”
declares Destination founder Tony Moran. “We want everyone to once again
recognize New York City as the party capital of the world!” The high- speed
journey begins at
11pm at NYC’s XL Nightclub (512 W 42nd St) and continues into
the wee morning hours.

Tony Moran will steer the decks, along with Brazilian dj
Gustavo Scorpio in the early hours with nightlife icon Flava hosting and
special live performances by international superstars Kristine W and Vernessa
Mitchell. A particular highlight of the evening will be the integration of music
videos displayed on a video wall customized by Tony and gigantic DNA
installation by Michael Longo of Sound Factory fame over the dance floor,
seamlessly synched to Tony’s original club mixes. Tickets are available now at
www.xlnightclub.com.

“Destination will be about movement, motion,
evolution, sex and sensuality,” explains Moran, a two-time Grammy nominated
remixer/ producer/singer-songwriter and DJ known for remixing popular songs by
Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Madonna and countless others. “I will use the DJ booth
as my laboratory to build new songs and remixes live.”

Destination will offer fans an elaborate NYC
experience with unique party elements that have never been seen anywhere else
in the world. The most notable will be the introduction of Pioneer Pro DJ
technology on the dancefloor, synching Tony’s original club mixes to video.
“The idea is for the visuals to be more than just dancers, performers and
lights,” explains Moran. “These videos will bring the club classics and future
classics to life.”

This is the reason why Destination is taking place
at XL Nightclub.
The venue offered Moran the freedom to bring in extra massive
sound, including $50,000 enhanced sound system exclusively for the night, turbo
charged with state-of-the-art subwoofers, ultra crisp tweeters, and
individually controlled speakers for Tony to create a true 3D sound experience.
Brand new visual enhancements will fill the club to make the magic happen.
“It’s not about the DJ in the booth anymore”, he continues. “It’s about putting
the spotlight on the dance floor and whisking clubbers on a fantastical
excursion of the senses.”

The evening will include special performances by
club superstars Kristine W and Vernessa Mitchell plus the brilliant,
circuit-favorite Flava performing Tony’s Destination XL Anthem.

Kristine and Tony have collaborated together on
several tracks, most recently hitting #1 on the US Billboard club charts with
“Walk Away”. Miss W has been a staple of the New York City nightlife scene for
over fifteen years. Her first single, “Feel What You Want” debuted in
New York City clubs. “Kristine W’s stronger than ever, and it just made total
sense to showcase her newest and greatest at Destination,” says Moran.

It gives him the opportunity to debut his recently
completed remix of Kristine W’s next single, “So Close To Me” with full length
extended video on the Video Wall. “It’s progressive Kristine W,” he continues.
“My remix reshapes her song for the progressive worldwide movement without
abandoning my circuit roots I am especially proud of it.”

Moran will also debut his brand new Vernessa
Mitchell song. Vernessa Mitchell is a gospel recording artist whose vocal
versatility has been heralded by R&B and House audiences. Her uplifting
house songs have charted seven times on the Billboard Dance charts. Hits
include “This Joy”, “Took My Life” (Billboard Club Play Song of the Year in
2004), and “Accept Me”, besides her timeless NYC anthem “Reap (What You Sow).
Moran is especially excited about the new mix as this marks his first
collaboration with the Grammy-nominated vocalist.

 “I’ve always admired Vernessa,”
he says. “I love the message of her songs and of course, that voice! I had been
reaching out to her for months trying to work with her. Miraculously, things
fell into place and it all came together. I’m so proud of my first song with
her.”

Tony Moran aims to launch Destination to other major cities. “We want to ‘Take
It All The Way’”, he says, slyly referencing another new anthem he wrote that
he will debut at Destination. “We’re building on those great Ibiza parties, but
going beyond the circuit sound and creating unique dance events with more of a
New York City thang.”

In the days prior to the event, Moran is releasing
Tony Moran+Deborah Cooper+Deep Influence, “Planet XL (That’s How We Do)” on
Wednesday, August 21; Tony Moran presents Vernessa Mitchell, “Rise!” on
Thursday, August 22; and Tony Moran’s futuristic progressive take on Tony Moran
& Ultra Naté, “Destination” on Friday, August 23.

NYC nightlife fixtures at all the cool events,
Dougie Meyer, Dina Delicious, Roze Black and Mark Nelson, are hosting the event,
and Moran has invited the singers, producers, djs and entertainment industry
giants to the party.

The event is produced by XL in association with
Sugar House and Continuous Cool.

Autumn in New York State

A covered bridge
framed by mountainsides awash in brilliant crimsons, oranges and
yellows, bushel baskets of apples, fields of plump pumpkins and corn
mazes carved into the hillsides… many of the most iconic images of
autumn in America seem to have come straight out of  New York State.

Autumn in the Empire State is more than a visual treat. It is also a
season of celebration. The Old English words for harvest (hærfest)
and autumn were the same, and anyone traveling through New York State
during the season quickly understands the connection. Roadside farm
stands, a plethora of farmer’s markets, wine trails and festivals
celebrating the harvesting of products from apples to zucchini make this
a fun and delicious time to explore the state.

It makes sense that harvest season would be cause for celebration in
New York State.  Nearly one fourth of the state’s total land area is
used as farmland and ranks among the nation’s biggest producers
of agricultural products including dairy, fruits, berries, maple syrup,
and a variety of vegetables such as sweet corn and pumpkins.  New York
also ranks third in grape and wine production. Best of all, New York
State food is about quality, not just quantity. The Empire State ranks
among the top states for fine wines and organic farming, and a growing number of highly skilled cheese makers are creating quality, artisanal cheeses here.

What follows is a sampling of the iconic autumn experiences that beckon across the state.

Follow the Foliage. I LOVE NEW YORK’s weekly foliage reports begin September 11 and are updated weekly through early November at iloveny.com/fall.
The site provides a detailed update of foliage conditions across New
York State, including a map charting fall color progress, vantage points
for viewing spectacular foliage, suggested autumn getaways and event
listings. You may also hear highlights of the foliage report by dialing
(800) CALL-NYS.

Some of the best vantage points are from the chair lifts at ski resorts like Peak ‘n Peak in Clymer in the Chautauqua-Allegheny region, especially on October 12-13 and 19-20, when juried crafters and kids’ activities add to the fun, and at Hunter Mountain in Palenville in the Catskills, October 5-6 and 12-13 when Oktoberfest brings the region’s German heritage to life with Old World music and foods.

Wine and Dine Harvest Celebrations.
The grape harvest and release of the new wines is cause for celebration
by lovers of great food and wine as well as vintners. Among this year’s
top celebrations are the Finger Lakes Cork & Fork, September 20-21 at Rodman Lott & Son Farms in Seneca Falls, NY, the Hudson Valley Wine and Food Fest, September 7 – 8 at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, and the September Saratoga Wine and Food Festival, held September 6-8 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. On Long Island, all things oyster will be celebrated at the annual waterfront Oyster Festival October 19-20 in Oyster Bay.

About New York State http://fallgetaways.iloveny.com/
New York State features 11 beautiful vacation regions. New York’s
attractions span from landmarks such as Niagara Falls, to the wine
trails of Hudson Valley and treasures like the Baseball Hall of Fame in
Cooperstown. Whether it’s wide-ranging outdoor activities for the whole
family like fishing, hiking and boating, culinary wonders and
farm-to-table fresh foods, or the rich history and culture of one of the
13 original colonies, New York State offers diverse activities for all
travelers. For more information, visit http://www.iloveny.com. Media can find press releases and more at thebeat.iloveny.com.

Musical Mondays and Cabaret at XL Nightclub

Last Night, XL Cabaret debuted ‘Monday Musicals,’ which included a
special performance by Tony Award winning
Kinky Boots
star Billy Porter.
I wanted to send you images and a brief recap in hopes you would be able to include it.

Billy arrived with actor
Victor Garber at XL Cabaret around 10pm
and hit the stage not long after in thigh high “kinky” boots (sans
pants). He did a solo live performance that was followed by a contest
with audience members to win 2 tickets to see his Broadway show ‘Kinky
Boots.’
He selected about 7 revelers and judged who had the fiercest walk. Billy was very interactive with the audience and in great spirits. He concluded the night with one additional number.

The Monday Musicals’ (August 19th) will have a special live performance by Broadway’s ‘Lion King’ star
Chondra Profit

Saturday, September 14th, burlesque star Katrina Darling (Kate Middleton’s cousin) will be performing at XL Cabaret, in a special show dubbed ‘God Save the Queens.’

Eating My Feelings Gay Author Mark Brennan Rosenberg in Brooklyn August 14th

Ever since MARK BRENNAN ROSENBERG was a foul-mouthed,sass-spouting, overweight teenager, he knew his life was one for thebooks. And he was right: with the publication of his first memoir

Blackouts and Breakdowns, Mark became a self-published sensation, touring across the country and winning over fans from small towns to big cities.
Now Mark’s back with a new book; EATING MY FEELINGS: Tales of Overeating, Underperforming and Coping with My Crazy Family (Three Rivers Press paperback original: August 2013).  This
collection of comic essays delves into Mark’s outrageous childhood, recounting his struggles as a
fat, sassy, soon-to-be-gay kid, relating to the world through his beloved idols from  All My Children, Melrose Place, and Clueless.
From battling his evil stepmother (with an arsenal of unprintable insults not suitable for your
average 10 year old), to attempting to blackmail his counselor at fat camp, and shamelessly sporting blackface on Halloween, Mark’s adolescent misadventures set him up perfectly for an equally flamboyant adult life. Things don’t slow down when Mark emerges into the image-obsessed world of gay New York, and he raises as much hell as he did in the sleepy Baltimore suburb of his childhood. Whether he’s hiring the personal trainer he only wants to sleep with, or blogging his way to fame with an X-rated twist on Julie & Julia, Mark’s life is anything but.
For a guy who describes himself as a whiter, skinnier, gayer version of Oprah, EATING
MY FEELINGS is Mark’s metaphorical wheelbarrow full of fat. No emotional stone is left
unturned—or potato chip left uneaten—as Mark gives us an uncensored and uproariously funny look into every one of his food and body issues.

MEET HIM August 14th with the first book tour stop at Word Bookstore (126 Franklin St) in Brooklyn
MARK BRENNAN ROSENBERG is the author of Blackouts and Breakdowns and writes the blog The Single Life. He currently resides in New York City and is single—so if you know of anyone, let him  know. Visit him online at markbrennanrosenberg.blogspot.com

New York City Producer John Ed Celebrates 20 Years in the Industry with Extravagant Party

Legendary producer and promoter John Ed will be celebrating 20 years
in the industry with a larger-than-life party at Marquee Nightclub on
August 15th for Catwalk Thursdays hosted by the famous Susanne Bartsch
and Brandon Voss.

As a graduate from the Baltimore School for the Arts and the Berklee
College of Music, John Ed’s passion for entertaining is an essential
piece of his creative fabric.  He was first enamored by the nightlife
scene when he made a trip to New York City from Boston to visit the
original Sound Factory Nightclub in the early 90’s.  “The energy was
over the top,” he recalled. “I remember one weekend I saw Madonna there,
sitting on top of one of the speakers and braiding her pigtail,
watching everyone and enjoying herself. She said to me, ‘I’m casting
dancers for my tour, let me see you dance.’ Honey, I carried on like
nobody’s business. I didn’t get the job, but I did end up being the
Creative Director for the new Sound Factory many years later with owner
Richard Grant, promoters Alex and Leo, and their new DJ Jonathan Peters.
It was a life-changing opportunity to create unforgettable memories for
others, much like I experienced years before.”

Before permanently moving to New York City in 1993, John Ed was
hired by legendary club promoters David Leigh and Lee Chappell to work
at their lavish themed parties.  “I now call Lee Chappell my Fairy
Godmother,” John Ed remembered fondly. “I learned so much from him. He
introduced me to so many people and taught me the ropes. He showed me
how to bring a party to life.”

Since then John Ed has been the Creative Director at some of New
York City’s hottest clubs, such as Sound Factory, Tunnel, Mirage,
Carbon, Exit, and Webster Hall. He has hosted events for big name
clients such as Beyonce, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Richard Branson,
Fendi, Donald Trump, Victoria Secret, and many other Fortune 500
companies.  While still the Creative Director at Exit Night Club, world
famous DJ Tiesto hired John Ed after his team attend a New Year’s Eve
event John Ed produced. “I wrote and created an entire show based upon
Tiesto’s vision and the songs he handpicked,” John Ed explained. “We
then executed this show at large arenas across the United States for
thousands of his fans.”

This year John Ed will be celebrating his 20th anniversary in the
industry with a larger-than-life party at Marquee Nightclub on August
15th for Catwalk Thursdays hosted by the famous Susanne Bartsch and
Brandon Voss.  Scheduled to perform is Florida’s legendary nightclub
Icon Kitty Meow and New York City’s talented Ebonee Excell, plus musical
entertainment from DJs Johnny Dynell and W. Jeremy. Transsexual Icon
Amanda LePore will also be hosting the lavish event, with special
appearances from some of the biggest nightlife personalities of NYC’s
past and present.  “I have met some amazing creative people in the
nightlife scene and I consider them to be family. It’s also so rewarding
to pass along my knowledge to others, much like how my fairy godmother
Lee Chappell helped me. I will never forget where I came from and I hope
everyone will come and celebrate life with me.  Here’s to another 20
years!”

John Ed is the owner and producer of famed entertainment company
Party Productions NYC. He is currently working on a big nightlife
project at a brand new venue from Ibiza coming this fall. His website
can be found at www.PartyProductionsNYC.com.

In addition to his busy calendar of special hosted events, John Ed
is also the producer and promoter for New York City’s #1 weekly
transsexual party, Tranny Strip. For more information, please visit  www.TrannyStrip.com.

John Ed’s 20th Anniversary Party will be held at Marquee Nightclub
is located at 289 10th Avenue in New York City from 11pm-4am. Admission
is $10 and attire is dress to impress.  Visit their website at www.MarqueeNY.com. For more information on Catwalk Thursdays by Susanne Bartsch and Brandon Voss, visit their official websites at www.SusanneBartsch.com and www.VossNYC.com.

New York Restaurants Dump Russian Vodka in the Streets

Gay rights activists in New York City dumped vodka onto the streets on Wednesday to protest new laws in Russia targeting homosexuals, as a growing number of gay bar owners across the United States vowed to stop pouring Russian vodka. “Boycotts are set for a reason. We’re trying to
influence change, and maybe change what’s happening in Russia,” said Chuck Hyde, general manager of Sidetrack, the largest gay bar in Chicago, which stopped carrying Stolichnaya vodka about a week ago.
TODAY A group of restaurant owners plan to dump Russian-made vodka into the
streets to protest new laws in Russia banning gay “propaganda.”

The protest is organized by the United Restaurant and Tavern Owners
Association, which represents 3,000 hotels, nightclubs, bars and

Gay rights, as human rights, have long been thrown aside by
the American society.  Sexuality cannot be defined as black and white
for all. There are many members of the LGBTQ Community that do not
identify with just one label. Queer culture is most often portrayed as
radical, quirky, off-beat even unserious, or detrimental to social and
familiar norms.  The goal of this project is to break barriers that the
LGBTQ community has lived under. The purpose is to give this community
the voice it deserves and the power to speak their truth.
This collection of works is done to portray the innovative, personal,
and participatory face of the gay movement and American culture at
large and in the home.

Each
subject is photographed with their eyes closed, then eyes open.
The
images are meant to be seen side by side. Closing their eyes gives the
viewer a sense of the subjects’ vulnerability. The eyes open, allows the
subject to look the viewer directly in the eye.  Once the photographs
have been taken, each subject participates in a short interview stating
their name and their identifiable label of their choosing.

The work will then be projected onto different buildings and landmarks, to superimpose this true-to-life image of the gay community and further the aims of the movement in light of the

current ACLU and marriage court
cases.  She has and will continue to tour the United States to shoot
individuals who overtly, or covertly,

identify
themselves within the LGBTQ community.  Her work has already
contributed greatly to the self-identity and empowerment of these
individuals, producing a massive support system.  This work will also be
contributed to book projects, street art and gallery exhibitions.  She
is working to unify others in her movement in celebration of sex,
freedom of identity, freedom of association, and culture.
