New York Queer Experimental Film Festival Nov. 12-17th

The 26th New York Queer Experimental Film Festival

DATES: November 12-17, 2013

LOCATION: 521 Third Avenue, Brooklyn
(between 12th & 13th Streets, in Gowanus)

SUBWAY: F,G, R to 4th Ave-9th Street

MIX NYC presents the 26th New York Queer Experimental Film Festival, with
over 225 short films, features, art installations and live
performances—made by or for lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, and
queer people—along with galleries and gathering spaces open free to the public.
This year’s MIX Festival promises to be an interactive and experiential
wonderland—yours for the making—filled with mind-bending art and
friendly crowds in a 20,000 sf warehouse transformed by local artists.

This year we’ve turned our venue into a living organism, complete a
monumental pair of breathing lungs, neuron lattices, fleshy openings and
veiny interiors. You’ll easily loose a few hours exploring the fleshy
nooks and crannies of the site. It’s the opposite antiseptic atmosphere
you’d find at a gallery or museum screening – it’s not about looking at
art in silence, then going home.

The 26th New York Queer Experimental Film Festival makes it
easy to open up to the warmth of our crowd and the outlaw energies of
our screens. And after the screenings are over, MIX NYC gives the
colorful and comfy lounge space to mingle with artists, meet new folks
from all walks of life, plot the downfall of oppression everywhere.  You
may just feel the call to make an experiment of yourself.

It’s the after-hours that makes the festival. If you’re out of sick
days, call in queer—the MIX celebration goes late every night.

Exergamers NYC: Senior Centers connect online for first-ever Xbox Bowling Competition

   Many of New
York’s
innovative senior centers have begun exergaming by offering Zumba
dancing and bowling with Microsoft Kinect for Xbox.
Classes and friendly competitions have taken
place within the senior centers and between them.

·
Participating
senior centers reflected some of New York City’s most innovative and diverse
senior centers. In fact, the sites that competed in the virtual bowling league
included the Services
& Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) Center,
Selfhelp Benjamin Rosenthal Senior Center, and the VISIONS/Services
for the Blind and Visually Impaired center.

o
SAGE: Services
& Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) is the country’s largest and oldest
organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender (LGBT) older adults.

o
SelfHelp
Community Services Inc.
: For the past 70-plus years, Selfhelp Community Services, Inc., a
non-profit organization, has been dedicated to enabling seniors and at-risk
families to live in their own homes, independently and with dignity.  Selfhelp serves seniors in Flushing, Queens, which
is one of the most ethnically diverse areas of New York.

o
VISIONS: Celebrating
its 87th year of service, VISIONS assists people of all ages who are blind or
visually impaired to lead independent and active lives in their homes and
communities; and educate the public to understand the capabilities and needs of
people who are blind or visually impaired

Third Party Research

·
According
to a study by the American Journal of Preventive
medicine in February 2012, exercise may prevent or delay dementia. However, only 14 percent of adults aged 65
to 74 years and 7 percent of those over 75 years exercise regularly.

In
a public/private partnership that builds upon the past success of New York
City’s first Virtual Senior Center, created in 2010, the Department for the
Aging (DFTA) and the Department of Information Technology &
Telecommunications (DoITT) teamed up again with Microsoft to launch the very
first Kinect for Xbox virtual bowling match. The interactive competition will
take place between two of DFTA’s Innovative Senior Centers (ISC) – The SAGE
Center, the first LGBT senior center in the city,
and
Selfhelp, the city’s first virtual senior center. A third ISC – VISIONS, the
City’s first Innovative Senior Center for blind and visually-impaired seniors,
will also host an exhibition of its Kinect program.

“Technology
is rapidly changing the way we perform even the most routine activities and it
is important that we promote digital inclusion,” said NYC Department for the
Aging Commissioner Lilliam Barrios-Paoli. “We must make sure our seniors are
actively engaged with technology, whether it is social media, a discussion with
family over Skype, or through an email with a loved one. When we can have our
seniors not only embrace technology, but also have it benefit their physical
wellbeing, it’s a win-win for everyone involved.”

“‘Exergamers
NYC’ is a shining example of how the City can use its public-private technology
partnerships to help New Yorkers – in this case our seniors – connect with
innovative solutions to improve their quality of life,” said DoITT Citywide Chief
Information and Innovation Officer Rahul N. Merchant. “The Bloomberg
Administration is committed to using technology to better serve New Yorkers.
Through this program we are collectively providing more opportunities for
seniors to engage with readily available technology to boost activity, social
interaction, and overall wellbeing.”

The Future of New York City

This week the Huffington Post ran an awesome series of photos showing what New York City may look like in the coming 20 years!

The new Penn Station – above. This summer a multibillion dollar plan will finally get underway to
brighten up the dank rail station and better accommodate the 600,000
people that pass through it each day. But it’ll be a while before the
much-maligned space looks fresh and tidy. Madison Square Garden, which
sits on top of the transit hub, was given 10 years to relocate.

.
The world’s largest ferris wheel will come to Staten Island in 2016. At 625 feet, the New York Wheel is predicted to draw millions of visitors to the borough.

After more than a decade of controversy — including scrapped Olympic
and Jets stadium plans — developers have crafted an ambitious plan to
convert 26 acres of rail facilities into the largest private real estate
development in city history. Hudson Yards is “a $15 billion
15-structure mini-city on Manhattan’s West Side that will create more office space than exists in Portland, Ore.,” according to the New York Daily News.

Headshots and Breakdowns Comedy Web Series

What happens when a gay twentysomething hits New York to follow his dream of becoming an actor? Reality sets in!

From outrageous roommates to disastrous dates, from insane parental admonitions to catastrophic auditions, Olive Garden waiter-turned-actor
John Graham gets a true taste of the Big Apple…in all its scurvy glory.
Season One of HEADSHOTS & BREAKDOWNS will be comprised of six episodes, each less than five minutes long. The first installment has just
debuted, with new ones premiering every two weeks (schedule below).
The comedy stars John Graham as…himself. Looking like the great-great-grandson of silent film star Buster Keaton, John’s expressions of
exasperation, humiliation and desperation are nothing short of a delight.
He might offer directors the best comic reaction shot since Bea Arthur fired her withering glances around the Golden Girls Miami abode.
John’s joined by a hysterically funny cast including actor/comedian Jimmy
Palumbo (30 Rock, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and downtown diva
Angela di Carlo (The Mad World of Miss Hathaway).
Director/Co-Creator Dave Snyder is currently VP of Development at Jigsaw
Productions, which won four Emmy Awards this year. His narrative short
film debut, yeah no definitely, stars Vincent Piazza (Lucky Luciano on
Boardwalk Empire) and his second narrative short, Play Name, received
Honorable Mention for the 2011 Iris Prize, the most prestigious award
given to an LGBT short.

Ronnie Kroell will Walk 900 Miles from Chicago to new York City

  Ronnie Kroell and Elliot
London, Co founders of THE FRIEND MOVEMENT will walk 921 miles, Chicago
to New  York

Kroell and London will walk 921 miles – over 37 days to raise awareness for increased bullying prevention efforts
across the country.

The walk, to coincide with National Bullying
Prevention Month, will begin on Saturday, Oct. 5 from The Bean in Millennium
Park in Chicago and end on Sunday, November 10 in New York City. Both men are
from Chicago, and decided to start their journey there.

London and Kroell  launched the FRIEND MOVEMENT, in response to the increasing number of suicides being committed
as a result of bullying.  Both men were subjected to bullying, and the
two  were inspired to establish the
movement in the wake of the suicide of Tyler Clementi, a Rutgers University
student who jumped to his death off the George Washington Bridge in New York
three years ago after being severely cyber-bullied by his dormitory roommate.
And they have filmed a documentary, “Friend” about bullying which is
currently in final stages of production.

London said, ” It is so important for me to make this
film. Our goal is to showcase the struggles of present day teens, and adults
for that matter, being bullied with the technology that we have all embraced.”

“Tyler may have been a young gay man, but bullying does
not discriminate.” said film maker London. ” It affects people
of all races, ages, religions, genders, sexualities, socio-economic backgrounds
and more,” adds London.  “And the impact of bullying is
profound.  It can lead to a plethora of physical and psychological problems
that can be life-long, in addition to suicide, which, by the way, is the number
one cause of death among school and college students in the U.S.”

Individuals can join FRIEND
MOVEMENT by visiting its indiegogo campaign
, https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/friend-movement-walk
For a $20 donation, participants will receive a specially made FRIEND MOVEMENT
watch, as well as a purple ribbon that can be sent back, in a postage-paid
envelope provided by the movement, to The Tyler Clementi Foundation with a
personalized dedication to a friend or family member.  Each ribbon will be
placed on the site of the closing ceremony of the walk in New York City.

New Jersey becomes 14th State for Gay Marriage

…14!!  A New Jersey judge ruled on Friday
that the state must allow same-sex couples to marry, saying that not
doing so deprives them of rights that were guaranteed by the United
States Supreme Court in June.

It is the first time a court has struck down a state’s refusal to
legalize same-sex marriage as a direct result of the Supreme Court
ruling, and with lawsuits pending in other states, it could presage
other successful challenges across the country.
The decision was a rebuff to Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican who vetoed a bill
passed by the Legislature last year that would have allowed same-sex
couples to marry. His office said it would appeal to the state’s highest
court. And he is likely to seek a stay preventing same-sex marriages
from beginning on Oct. 21, as the judge ordered.

SAVE New Yorks Gay Halloween Parade

The
New York City Village Halloween Parade, a not-for-profit arts
organization, today announced the launch of their Kickstarter Campaign,
set to go live on September 17th. The campaign will raise
monies in an effort to recover considerable financial losses from the
last minute cancellation of last year’s Parade due to Superstorm Sandy,
as well as provide financial backing to ensure that the Parade will
celebrate its 40th Anniversary this Halloween.

The
iconic event has provided an exuberant cacophony of lights, sounds and
magical visuals on Halloween night for the past 40 years, attracting
over 2 million people from across the globe at the 2011 Parade alone.
Last year’s cancellation was the first in the Parade’s history, marking a
milestone the organization never hoped to meet. In the face of
devastation and destruction, the Parade has always been there to lift
the spirits of the global community, having been the first major event
in New York after 9/11, welcoming thousands of Hurricane Katrina
refugees in 2005 and commissioning Haitian Carnival Puppets in 2010
after the earthquake in Haiti.

“While
nothing compares to the tragic loss of life and home caused by Sandy,
the last minute cancellation proved to be a financial disaster for the
Parade, putting our

organization
out over $50,000,” said Jeanne Fleming, Producer and Artistic Director.
“We have been hard at work to overcome the setbacks Hurricane Sandy
brought, but

now
we are asking the millions of people who have ever marched  in or
watched to parade to help us make certain the Parade lives on.”

Through the help of crowd funding via Kickstarter, the Parade will continue to entertain the public for a 40th
year with a special appearance of the Giant Spider by Master Puppeteer
Basil Twist on the Jefferson Market Library Clock Tower.  For more
information on how to become involved in the Kickstarter campaign to
save the New York City Village Halloween Parade, please visit http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/729950056/bring-halloween-back-to-nyc or www.halloween-nyc.com/

AGWA de Bolivia Herbal Liqueur

Agwa de Bolivia (usually shortened to AGWA) is a herbal liqueur made with Bolivian coca leaves and 37 other natural herbs and botanicals including green tea, ginseng, and guarana, distilled and produced in Amsterdam by BABCO Europe Limited.

The coca leaf content of the drink, like that in Coca-Cola, has the cocaine alkaloids removed during production, and does not contain the drug.

The leaves used for the production of AGWA are picked at 2000 metres above sea level in the Andes. The leaves are then shipped under armed guard to Amsterdam, where they are distilled to a strength of 78-88% alc./vol. and 36 other botanical elements are added.

It mixes with just about everything!  We tried a bottle and some various concoctions.

The Cocarita (AGWA’s twist on the Margarita):
Ingredients: 2oz Frozen AGWA, 1oz Tequila, Juice of 1-2 fresh limes.
Method: Shake AGWA, Tequila & Lime Juice with ice. Strain into a salt-frosted
Margarita glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.
The AGWA Fresca:(pictured)
Method: A serving of Frozen AGWA poured over ice and some lime wheels in a long
glass, and topped with club soda.
The Bolivian Rhapsody
Ingredients: 1.5oz AGWA, ½ fresh lime, 1 tsp. raspberry jam, 1 tsp. vanilla sugar, 1 dash
cardamom bitters, 1 tsp. chocolate syrup
Method: Muddle lime, sugar, jam, and syrup; top with crushed ice in Collins glass. Add
AGWA and bitters and stir. Garnish: lime zest
The Rainforest Caipirinha
Ingredients: AGWA, Lime wedges, Brown sugar, Ice, Cane swizzle stick
Method: Muddle AGWA, lime wedges, brown sugar together, mix with crushed ice.
Garnish with a cane swizzle stick.
Want to try a signature AGWA cocktail that works all year round? You can never
go wrong with a classic recipe, the Bolivian Mojito, AGWA’s twist on the traditional
drink, or the lime ritual, known as “Kryptonice.”
Bolivian Mojito:
Ingredients: 1.5oz Frozen AGWA, 12 mint leaves, 2-3 lime wedges, 2 tsp. sugar, 7oz club
soda, splash of your favorite rum.
Method: Gently crush the mint leaves in a long glass.  Squeeze the limes over the crushed
mint, and add the sugar and crushed ice.  Add the AGWA, your favorite rum, and club
soda and stir well.  Garnish with a fresh lime wedge and fresh mint leaves.
The AGWA shot, also known as “Kryptonice”, is also a favorite.  Simply pour frozen
AGWA in a shot glass and serve with a lime wedge!

Unbroken Circle & Tennessee William’s The Two Character Play – Hosting a LGBT night September 12th and 19th

TWO CHARACTER PLAY:  SEPTEMBER  12th

Tony Award winner Amanda Plummer (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Agnes of
God, Pulp Fiction
) and Academy Award nominee Brad Dourif (The voice of Chucky in the Child’s Play Series,
Lord of the Rings Trilogy, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,
Deadwood
) unite their white-hot talents for this highly anticipated
production of Tennessee Williams’ The Two-Character Play. Reality and
fantasy are interwoven with terrifying power as two actors on tour –
brother and sister – find themselves deserted by their troupe. Faced by
an audience expecting a performance, they enact The Two-Character Play. As they
dip in and out of performance they find it difficult to differentiate
themselves from their roles and reality from illusion. Haunting, provocative,
and often funny, The Two-Character Play is one of Tennessee Williams’
most personal – and mystifying – works. Now playing, for more info

moving performance as the born-again Christian, Aunt June. Inspired by events
from his extended Texas family, playwright James Wesley stars
as the troubled Bobby alongside his real-life daughter Juli WesleyUNBROKEN

Venue: Walter Reade Theater

Father Adam is the talk of the small Polish town he’s assigned to.
Handsome, strong, and unfazed by a violent group of local teens, he’s
idolized and occasionally hit on by local men and women alike. It’s only
when the brooding and beautiful Lukasz, an orphan and accused arsonist,
falls into his arms one hot summer day that Father Adam feels the
sudden pang of repressed desire. Soon his feelings of lust give way to
love, setting off suspicion within the tight-knit, conservative
community. Shot in glowing, golden sunlight and set within the sprawling
fields and forests of Poland, Malgoska Szumowska’s sumptuous drama
(2013 Teddy Award winner for Best Feature Film at the Berlin
International Film Festival) teems with sensuality and tension.
