SAGE Cuts Ribbon on New Space – Expanding Vital Services Citywide for LGBT Older Adults
Yesterday,SAGE welcomed
friends and supporters,
including New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Calamus Foundation Board Chair Louis Bradbury, to celebrate the unveiling of its new office. This space will be dedicated primarily to expanding SAGE’s services and programs to the thousands of LGBT older adults who live in New York City.
SAGE was able to acquire the space due to a generous award of capital funds from the New York City Council, the Manhattan Borough President and the Calamus Foundation, reflecting a growing faith among government and philanthropic leaders about the importance of improving the lives of LGBT older adults around the city, and the country.
“This seed money from our city and the Calamus Foundation is an important vote of confidence in SAGE’s mission and in our ability to successfully manage our resources and to build an effective, sustainable organization,” said Michael Adams, executive director of SAGE. “Now, for the first time in our 32-year history, SAGE owns a permanent home that LGBT older adults can rely on now and in the future.”
The new space will be built out over the coming months and will be designed to ensure optimal program delivery to meet LGBT elders’ most critical needs. SAGE is currently seeking additional funding to complete the project.
THIS WEEKEND – there is a conference and expo –

This is not about us vs. them, it is about WE – as human beings.
This battle is not one of gay rights; it is about human rights.
In fact, it is not even about rights, it is simply about equality.
Bullying has become an epidemic that has plagued our schools and is spreading wildly

New York Governor Race…Cuomo tells Gays he Will Legalize Same-Sex Marriage
race for governor
has been dominated by state Attorney General and democrat Andrew Cuomo, and Buffalo businessman and Tea Party-backed Republican, Carl Paladino.
As we all know, Paladino is EXTREMELY Homophobic! He is petrified of gay men in bathing suits grinding up against each other! He has called us “disgusting dysfunctional homosexuals!” yet also says, “”My feelings on homosexuality are unequivocal; I have absolutely no problem with it whatsoever.” WTF?!
Obviously, no gay in their right mind will vote for him.
MEANWHILE, Andrew Cuomo says,“I don’t want to be the governor who just proposes marriage equality. I don’t want to be the governor who lobbies for marriage equality. I don’t want to be the governor who fights for marriage equality. I want to be the governor who signs the law that makes equality a reality in the state of New York,” said the Democratic nominee.
The declaration is “music to our ears,” one activist said.
The Paladino campaign has been in high damage-control mode since last week, when the candidate made what many considered highly offensive remarks about gays during a visit with Orthodox Jewish leaders in Brooklyn. He has since apologized for those remarks while maintaining his stance against gay marriage.
“Take nothing for granted because people are afraid, people are anxious and these forces are looking to exploit that,” Cuomo said.
The attorney general called Paladino’s remarks about gays “alarming and divisive and negative,” but declined to say how his daughters felt about them — particularly Paladino’s criticism that the girls should not have been allowed to accompany their dad to this summer’s pride parade.
Mayor Bloomberg, making his first appearance at the event in years, vowed to the audience, “I will fight with you until we achieve marriage equality for all New Yorkers” as Judy Garland tunes played in the background!

Margaret Talbot Takes Stock of the latest Advances and Setbacks in the Fight for Gay Rights
This week Margaret Talbot did a great piece in the New Yorker called PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.
She says, “In the past few weeks, it has been easy to forget that Americans are becoming more accepting of gays and lesbians and of their rights to equal citizenship…
…then we had the remarks of Carl Paladino, the Republican gubernatorial candidate in New York, who said in a speech before Orthodox Jewish rabbis that children should not be “brainwashed” into thinking that homosexuality is “an equally valid and successful option.” Given an opportunity to elaborate on “Good Morning America” and the “Today” show, Paladino described gay-pride parades as “disgusting”; denounced his rival, Andrew Cuomo, for taking his children, aged twelve and fifteen, to the gay-pride parade in New York City; and declared his hostility to same-sex marriage.
You don’t have to argue for any kind of equivalency between, say, the lynching of three gay men and the intemperate remarks of a politician to acknowledge that, in the use of a word like “disgusting,” something ugly and fundamental is being revealed, the id in the ideology.”
She goes on to talk about the gay teen suicides and the more that our acceptance wins—and it is winning—the more angry obstructionism we’ll see from people who still can’t accept it. Clearly, tolerance has hit a few snags, some more serious than others.

Joey Arias in Concert! First Time Live in New York In Nearly a Decade!
A fixture of New York City’s
vibrant downtown performance scene for 30-plus years, Joey Arias is a bona fide NYC icon. From his early days at Fiorrucci and performing with his close friend Klaus Nomi, Arias has been an enigmatic figure. From outrageous performances at Club 57, Jackie 60 and Squeezebox to the now-legendary nights at Bar d’O where he held court with Raven-O and Sherry Vine, Arias distinguished himself with scandalous wit, sleek style and an extraordinary voice evocative of Lady Day yet uniquely his own.
It was no surprise when Arias was tapped by Cirque du Soleil to originate the role of the emcee in their Las Vegas spectacular Zumanity, for which he co-wrote 3 songs. After 6 years in that role, Arias returned to New York where he became star and co-creator of Arias With a Twist with master puppeteer Basil Twist. The show was a critical and commercial hit and extended repeatedly for a total of 6 months at HERE Arts Center. The show has been subsequently presented in Los Angeles and Paris and spawned a “docu-fantasy” film of the same name which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and had itʼs US premiere at the TriBeca Film Festival earlier this year.
Arias has performed worldwide at venues including Carnegie Hall, The Freedom Theatre in London and on a transatlantic world tour into the cabaret clubs of Paris, and Tokyo to Germany and England. On film, he has appeared in Mondo New York, Big Top Pee Wee, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, Wigstock – The Movie, Flawless and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.
The Fall cultural season swings into high gear as the legendary Joey Arias returns with his first concert engagements in New York City in nearly a decade!
Music directed by Ben Allison (Newport Jazz Festival), a rising star on the new jazz scene, and produced by “downtown impresario” Earl Dax (Weimar New York) the concerts will feature Arias’ signature ‘channeling’ of Billie Holiday and other favorites from the Arias oeuvre as well as original songs and a few surprises. These highly anticipated concerts feature a live band hand-picked by Allison and feature lighting design Ayumu “POE” Saegusa, the highly acclaimed lighting designer for Arias with a Twist. The stark, dramatic world created for the production is designed to highlight Arias’ distinctive and seductive voice and to highlight the dynamic interplay between Arias, Allison and the band. Arias says of the concerts, “I’m inviting the audience to dream as I take them back and then to the future.”
Last weeks show sold out – and this weeks show is almost sold out!

Michael Chase DiMartino Creates Videos Designed to Bring Joy to the Deaf
New York native,
Chase, began performing at a young age. He sang in Carnegie Hall when he was 16. Later, he performed in a play called “Kosher Harry” for which he received rave reviews from the New York Times for his leading role. Now writing and producing his own songs, Chase endeavors to bring communities together through his music.
Michael “Chase” DiMartino is a new breed of Clark Kent. By day, the 26-year-old serves as a sign-language interpreter — translating meetings for a deaf business woman in New York City. By night, the Bay Ridge, Brooklyn native is using his hands — and his moves — for another lofty purpose: To bring the likes of Britney Spears and Lady Gaga to the deaf and hearing-impaired communities through the art of sign language.
After he posted interpretive videos of “Womanizer,” to You Tube, Britney Spears herself had them posted to her website, bringing DiMartino’s videos over the 700,000-viewer threshold. He’s been asked to interpret Lady Gaga’s sold-out show at Madison Square Garden (check out his sign-language video for “Bad Romance” ). A singer-songwriter and performer in his own rite, Chase has been showcasing his own original material and, in doing so, hoping to bridge the hearing and deaf communities in a way that has never been done before.
He is quoted, “Can you envision a stadium packed with people – half of them hearing, and the other half deaf/hard of hearing – and all of them enjoying the same music? That is my dream.” His first single, Falldown, and his follow-up song, Hard Candy, are both available on iTunes. His EP is set to release this summer.
With the release of this new video HARD CANDY, Chase has discussed a little about his sexuality. He starts off by saying:
“Gay? Who me? Not such a big issue to me. I don’t believe music has a gender. It has no sex. The art of music does not differentiate between its gay or straight counterparts. For myself, I identify as gay only because it seems to be the most …easily explained, and also, more readily accepted.
But if I were to break it down, I would say this: ‘I truly believe myself to love a person for who they are. Gender unattached. I believe that if the right female came along, I could fall in love (and have, with women in the past). But as it stands right now, I am in love with one who happens to be a male.’ “
“After “Womanizer,” there was this shift in my mind, where I no longer wanted to do just that. I wanted to show people who I am, what my voice is, what my influence on music is. That’s why I started to go into the studio and started to write songs with another artist, Adam Joseph . He did the instrumental and we wrote lyrics together. “
It’s been just a wonderful time. I have my videos, which are an extension of myself and now I feel like I have my music, which is an extension of myself and it really feels like a baby. I’ve always heard people say that but I never understood it until now. It feels like my baby. I put so much into this — and it’s my emotion. It’s going onto a limb. It’s taking a huge risk.”

I recently discovered the wonderful effects of Hot Stone Therapy!
Hot stone therapy is a thoroughly nurturing treatment, using hot basalt stones to massage – the conjunction of heat and massage has a powerful sedative and calming effect on the body. The heat of the stones is carried down into the deeper layers of the body resulting in a release of tension in the muscles and connective tissue. Increased circulation results in the removal of toxins from the system and increases the flow of lymph throughout the body.
Basalt Rock is formed when a volcano erupts and hot lava spills out over the edge to cool and form rock. Over many hundreds of years the rock (basalt) is exposed to wind, rain, heat, cold and the natural progression of the moons and the changes of the seasons. The stones we use for the therapy are found in rivers where they have been tumbled to their wonderful smooth and rounded shape.
So many of us neglect our personal health and wellness. Today’s society focuses strongly on outer beauty. While trying to live up to those standards, we often neglect our inner wellness. We are all unique individuals with different body compositions requiring specific techniques to help boost your wellness and inner beauty. We need to make time for ourselves and Rest, Replenish, and FEEL GREAT doing it!

Dozens of thin metal pins inserted into the skin will send chills up just about any first-timer’s spine. But in reality, it’s nothing really. It does not hurt and most people feel the positive effects almost immediately. Where the sterile acupuncture needle has been inserted, you may experience a slight numbness, tingling, or dull ache. Sometimes people experience a sensation of energy spreading and moving around the needle. Acupuncture helps reopen “clogged” channels in order for the body to heal itself.
Acupuncture is extremely safe. It is an all-natural, drug-free therapy, yielding no side effects. There is also no danger of infection from acupuncture needles, because they are sterile, used once and then discarded.
The number of treatments will vary from person to person. Many people experience
Immediate relief; others may take months to achieve result. Chronic conditions usually take longer to treat than acute ones.

Gay Same Sex Couples Can Now Jointly Adpot Under New York Law
Gov. David Paterson
signed into law yesterday a new measure that allows unmarried partners, including gay couples, to adopt.
Gay New Yorkers STILL CAN’T MARRY!
But this new law permits unmarried partners, including gay couples, to adopt. The new adoption statute also changes the gender-specific term “husband and wife” to the gender-neutral term “married couple,” according to the New York Post. This change recognizes the right of same-sex couples legally married elsewhere to adopt.
Prior to the new law, gay individuals were permitted to adopt, but now adopted children are entitled to support, insurance and other benefits from both adults.

Ground Zero Mosque Moves Forward…Dealing with Prejudice, Forgivness, Islamphobia and More
The September 11th attacks (often referred to as 9/11 ) happened nine years ago today. Everyone is blogging about it, everyone has an opinion.
Many words come to mind today…sadnesss, hurt, hate, prejudice, forgiveness, injustice, empathy, Islampohobia…I could go on and on. Our experiences and what we do with them shape and determine our trajectory. Often, they change us gradually; sometimes, they are immediately life altering. Everyone was affected in different ways.
The Islamic community that hopes to build a $100 million mosque and Islamic center near Ground Zero has cleared an important hurdle – approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission to build on the site.
But that approval – which was expected – is not likely to end the controversy about whether the site of the mosque is offensive to people who lost their loved ones on 9/11 or whether the Islamic community has the right to build a place of religious worship where they want.
The issue has taken on national proportions with Republicans such as Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich coming out in opposition to the mosque. It has become a part of the governor’s race in New York with Republican Rick Lazio opposed to it and Attorney General Andrew Cuomo in favor.
On his blog today, Michael Moore said, “I am opposed to the building of the “mosque” two blocks from Ground Zero.
I want it built on Ground Zero. Why? Because I believe in an America that protects those who are the victims of hate and prejudice. I believe in an America that says you have the right to worship whatever God you have, wherever you want to worship. And I believe in an America that says to the world that we are a loving and generous people and if a bunch of murderers steal your religion from you and use it as their excuse to kill 3,000 souls, then I want to help you get your religion back. And I want to put it at the spot where it was stolen from you.
There’s been so much that’s been said about this manufactured controversy, I really don’t want to waste any time on this day of remembrance talking about it. But I hate bigotry and I hate liars….Blaming a whole group for the actions of just one of that group is anti-American.Timothy McVeigh was Catholic. Should Oklahoma City prohibit the building of a Catholic Church near the site of the former federal building that McVeigh blew up?”

DIGNITY FOR ALL STUDENTS! Gov Paterson Signs Act To Protect
Charles Robbins, Executive Director of The Trevor Project, the nation’s leading organization focused on crisis intervention and suicide prevention for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth, made the following statement in response to Governor David Paterson’s signing into law the inclusive Dignity for All Students Act in New York:
“Today, Governor Paterson signed into law an assurance of protection from bullying and harassment for all students, regardless of real or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and expression, and sex in publicly funded schools in New York.
The law would make New York one of more than 40 states with anti-bullying laws, 14 of which plus the District of Columbia provide inclusive protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. When youth are threatened at school, or their property gets stolen at school, and they fight at school, the odds that they will attempt suicide more than double. Considering more than half of sexual minority youth in schools have been verbally harassed and one in ten is physically assaulted, the Dignity for All Students Act with the inclusion of gender identity and expression will be a giant step to reducing instances of self-harm and suicide that result from harassment by school peers.”
The Trevor Project is the leading national organization focused on crisis intervention and suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQ youth. Every day, The Trevor Project saves young lives through its free and confidential lifeline, in-school workshops, educational materials, online resources and advocacy. The organization was founded in 1998 by three filmmakers whose film, “Trevor,” a comedy/drama about a gay teenager who attempts suicide, received the 1994 Academy Award® for Best Short Film (Live Action).
