Joey Arias in Concert! First Time Live in New York In Nearly a Decade!

A fixture of New York City’s
vibrant downtown performance scene for 30-plus years, Joey Arias is a bona fide NYC icon.  From his early days at Fiorrucci and performing with his close friend Klaus Nomi, Arias has been an enigmatic figure.  From outrageous performances at Club 57, Jackie 60 and Squeezebox to the now-legendary nights at Bar d’O where he held court with Raven-O and Sherry Vine, Arias distinguished himself with scandalous wit, sleek style and an extraordinary voice evocative of Lady Day yet uniquely his own.

It was no surprise when Arias was tapped by Cirque du Soleil to originate the role of the emcee in their Las Vegas spectacular Zumanity, for which he co-wrote 3 songs.  After 6 years in that role, Arias returned to New York where he became star and co-creator of Arias With a Twist with master puppeteer Basil Twist.  The show was a critical and commercial hit and extended repeatedly for a total of 6 months at HERE Arts Center.  The show has been subsequently presented in Los Angeles and Paris and spawned a “docu-fantasy” film of the same name which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and had itʼs US premiere at the TriBeca Film Festival earlier this year.

Arias has performed worldwide at venues including Carnegie Hall, The Freedom Theatre in London and on a transatlantic world tour into the cabaret clubs of Paris, and Tokyo to Germany and  England.  On film, he has appeared in Mondo New York, Big Top Pee Wee, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, Wigstock – The Movie, Flawless and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.

The Fall cultural season swings into high gear as the legendary Joey Arias  returns with his first concert engagements in New York City in nearly a decade!

Music directed by Ben Allison (Newport Jazz Festival), a rising star on the new jazz scene, and produced by “downtown impresario” Earl Dax (Weimar New York) the concerts will feature Arias’ signature ‘channeling’ of Billie Holiday and other favorites from the Arias oeuvre as well as original songs and a few surprises.  These highly anticipated concerts feature a live band hand-picked by Allison and feature lighting design Ayumu “POE” Saegusa, the highly acclaimed lighting designer for Arias with a Twist.  The stark, dramatic world created for the production is designed to highlight Arias’ distinctive and seductive voice and to highlight the dynamic interplay between Arias, Allison and the band.  Arias says of the concerts, “I’m inviting the audience to dream as I take them back and then to the future.”

Last weeks show sold out – and this weeks  show is almost sold out!

JOEY ARIAS IN CONCERT   with  Music Directed by BEN ALLISON      October  8 and 9

Michael Chase DiMartino Creates Videos Designed to Bring Joy to the Deaf

New York native,
Chase, began performing at a young age. He sang in Carnegie Hall when he was 16. Later, he performed in a play called “Kosher Harry” for which he received rave reviews from the New York Times for his leading role. Now writing and producing his own songs, Chase endeavors to bring communities together through his music.

Michael “Chase” DiMartino is a new breed of Clark Kent. By day, the 26-year-old serves as a sign-language interpreter — translating meetings for a deaf business woman in New York City. By night, the Bay Ridge, Brooklyn native is using his hands — and his moves — for another lofty purpose: To bring the likes of Britney Spears and Lady Gaga to the deaf and hearing-impaired communities through the art of sign language.

After he posted interpretive videos of “Womanizer,” to You Tube,  Britney Spears herself had them posted to her website, bringing DiMartino’s videos over the 700,000-viewer threshold. He’s been asked to interpret Lady Gaga’s sold-out show at Madison Square Garden (check out his sign-language video for “Bad Romance” ). A singer-songwriter and performer in his own rite, Chase has been  showcasing his own original material and, in doing so, hoping to bridge the hearing and deaf communities in a way that has never been done before.

He is quoted, “Can you envision a stadium packed with people –  half of them hearing, and the other half deaf/hard of hearing  – and all of them enjoying the same music? That is my dream.” His first single, Falldown, and his follow-up song, Hard Candy, are both available on iTunes.  His EP is set to release this summer.

With the release of this new video  HARD  CANDY, Chase has discussed a little about his sexuality. He starts off by saying:

Gay? Who me? Not such a big issue to me. I don’t believe music has a gender. It has no sex. The art of music does not differentiate between its gay or straight counterparts. For myself, I identify as gay only because it seems to be the most …easily explained, and also, more readily accepted.

But if I were to break it down, I would say this: ‘I truly believe myself to love a person for who they are. Gender unattached. I believe that if the right female came along, I could fall in love (and have, with women in the past). But as it stands right now, I am in love with one who happens to be a male.’

“After “Womanizer,” there was this shift in my mind, where I no longer wanted to do just that. I wanted to show people who I am, what my voice is, what my influence on music is. That’s why I started to go into the studio and started to write songs with another artist, Adam Joseph . He did the instrumental and we wrote lyrics together.

It’s been just a wonderful time. I have my videos, which are an extension of myself and now I feel like I have my music, which is an extension of myself and it really feels like a baby. I’ve always heard people say that but I never understood it until now. It feels like my baby. I put so much into this — and it’s my emotion. It’s going onto a limb. It’s taking a huge risk.”

The sixties are back! Beckie Menzie  & Tom Michael celebrate the 50th anniversary of the decade that forever revolutionized popular music.  From the idyllic early Motown sound and British invasion to the free love and angst of Woodstock, “That 60’s Show” will feature songs by many of the decades favorite performers including The Beatles, The Supremes, The Everly Brothers, Elvis Presley, Petula Clark,  Janis Joplin and many more, all done in Menzie & Michael’s unique award-winning style at The Metropolitan Room.

One of cabaret’s most in demand duos, Menzie & Michael offer a unique blend of whimsy, nostalgia and unquestionable talent that translates into pure entertainment. Their imaginative musical twists on jazz  favorites, standards, contemporary pop, Broadway show tunes and film gems have won them audience and critical acclaim across the country and around the globe.  Hailed by The Chicago Tribune as “One of the most compelling duos in cabaret today,” they have appeared on some of the country’s most prestigious stages, including New York’s Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.

Their recording efforts have been praised by Billboard Magazine, Backstage, Show Business Weekly and Playbill and their latest CD, Better Two-gether has been hailed by critics as “magic,”  “sensational,” and “…the years best recording.”  In what they call a “musical marriage,” Menzie and Michael delight audiences with their rare chemistry, inventive arrangements and genuine love for music and for one another. Menzie’s rich voice and expert piano stylings sizzle on everything from sassy swing to smoky torch songs.

A three-time winner of Chicago’s After Dark “Outstanding Cabaret Artist” award, Menzie is a diva-in-demand whom Chicago’s WGN Radio has praised as “one of the city’s finest performers.”  With a voice that Billboard Magazine describes as “…a revelation,” Michael’s warm expressive style and charismatic tenor breathe new life into cabaret standards and reveal why Backstage Magazine has called him “one of the most striking singers to emerge in the last dew years.” Together, their playful, passionate performances produce what critics have called “sizzling,” “pure brilliance,” and  “cabaret at its best!”

Steven Brinberg IS Barbra Streisand

“When you first hear Steven’s Simply Barbra CD, for the first brief moment, you almost think, ‘My God! Is that really her?’ [Streisand] It’s so captivating! Not only does he have a wonderful take on her — not at all mean-spirited — and this ability to imitate her, he also captures a lot of moments and nuances that are terrific. It was very impressive.”  –  Marvin Hamlisch

Me too!  When I first heard Steven sing Barbra, I was  quite impressed. He was just in Chicago and I had the chance to see and hear him perform live. Steven  is the premier Barbra Streisand impressionist, performing his incredible show, Simply Barbra, to international acclaim both on stage and television (and performing twice with none other than Marvin Hamlisch!) as he pays homage to all that is Streisand!

Steven does not lip-sync his performances but accurately portrays Streisand with his own voice! With over a decade of performing experience, his amazing show has Steven in demand literally worldwide!

Steven conceived Simply Barbra in 1993 at Don’t Tell Mama in New York City, where the show continues to run when he is not touring. The ever-changing show has been seen in London’s West End, The Edinburgh Festival, Atlantic City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Houston, Washington, D.C., New York City, and many other cities both in the United States and around the World!

We chatted briefly in Chicago, then Steven was headed off to Ireland.  His career started quite by accident as he tells  DEEP DISH …”I was performing cabaret shows as myself, and I would sing snippets of other voices – Cher, Katharine Hepburn, Billie Holiday – but my Barbra was the most popular. One day a friend suggested that I do an entire Barbra show, but I was like “I don’t even look like her and I don’t know anything about makeup.” But I finally booked a couple of weeks to perform as Barbra in New York – and the show just took off.”

Singing Streisand is a rarity. “Other than the veteran performer Jim Bailey, I am the only other male Barbra (that I know of) who sings live. Hers is such a unique voice that it is very hard to do properly. I was inspired when in an interview Barbra was asked what she thought of all the men who do her and she said “I wish they’d do me better!” and I thought I am going to be the first one to do her justice and NOT cross my eyes and be mean…I wanted to be flattering to her because I am such a fan…..I have never met Barbra…..but she knows me. Her manager hired me to sing at Donna Karan’s birthday party – and through her stage director, she told me what to say at the party. We almost met when she was at the same play I was – but I lost my nerve to go over to her. She later learned that I was there and said, “Why didn’t he say hello?” But I just wasn’t ready to meet her…”

Steven has been able to see Babs  perform on several occassions – giving him an opportunity to study her up close.
 He tells  Barbra news

“I had a friend in Los Angeles who knew someone who knew someone who could get tickets for the  1986 ONE VOICE  concert. There were only 500 seats and it wasn’t easy. When he said yes, then I had to convince my parents to give me the money… a lot for a kid to spend! Even then, people were saying this might be her last concert. It was well worth it. We were served dinner on her tennis court. I saw Bette, Whoopi, Goldie,Walter Matthau (they must have made up from DOLLY) everyone seemed to be famous except my party. It was amazing to hear her sing live for the first time and think “This is not a record!” You could look in the windows of her houses, but there were portisans and her trailer set up as bathrooms. I used the latter, and saved the pink heart shape soap I found by the sink!

More recently, I was in Australia while  she was  there also, and Marvin got my pianist and I great seats up close (the concert in the rain in Sydney). It was wild. I did my show one night, saw her show the next night, did my show the next night, and people in the audience waved the flashlights they got at her show! I did a lot of TV while I was there and am told that she saw me on one of the shows! I hope it was the one where the lighting was so beautiful (The Bert Show) cause that’s important to me, and to Barbra. The brief scene I have in the new  movie CAMP (after the very end credits) is also lit beautifully. I think she’ll be pleased at how I look as her.”

What’s next for Steven Brinberg?
“Continuing to tour all over the place – and I’m hoping to perform again as myself. My real voice and look are so different than Barbra – but I’m not giving up Barbra. I would just like to be a boy also. I’d love to be a CSI killer and have people go, “Guess what else he does.” “

Catch him in New Jersey ,  July  8th, 2010.  Also follow Simply Barbra on Facebook

FLOW AFFAIR Flagging + Voguing = Floguing at THE CENTER April 23rd

To celebrate
the near-completion of Flow Affair, the new documentary to be released by Art From The Heart Films, the award-winning director Wolfgang Busch is hosting a Website Launch Party and fundraiser at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 23, 2010 at the LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th Street, New York, NY.

The suggested donation is $20.

Melba Moore, the ground-breaking Tony Award-winning actress and singer who has collaborated musically with Michael Jackson and has stared on Broadway opposite Eartha Kitt, will join Meli’sa Morgan, the top Billboard magazine recording artist, to headline the fundraiser featuring musical and dancing performances to benefit the completion of Flow Affair.

The fundraiser will present special performances of the new dance, “Floguing.”

Flow Affair explores the evolution of dance by showcasing the emergence of “Floguing” – a breakthrough in dance that has only begun to show up at underground circuit parties and dance clubs, and in innovative dance choreography.

“I am grateful that the community is supporting Flow Affair,” said Busch.  “We are revolutionizing dance, and I hope this fundraiser will help us bring Floguing to the whole world.”

Floguing – it’s like voguing, but with flags or fans in your hands
In 2006, Busch, the director and producer of Flow Affair, brought together members from the House Ball community, the originators of the dance “Voguing,” and members from the Flagging community, the originators of the dance “Flagging” and “Fanning,” to create a new dance :  FLAGGING  +  VOGUING  =  FLOGUING.

At the House Ball’s voguing competitions, there is a dance category called voguing with a prop, where dancers sometimes use fabric and fans.  Introducing flags was the next step in the category’s artistic progression.  Soon, dancers were “walking the runway” with flags, and, in the process, the new dance “Floguing” was created.

About Wolfgang Busch :
A community-organizer and activist, Busch is an openly gay documentary filmmaker.  His first feature documentary release, How Do I Look (2006), was about the success of the Harlem House Ball community in creating cutting-edge trends in fashion, dance, and runway.  He uses the arts to empower communities in several states.

Ari Gold Wins 3 PILL Awards Last Night

ARI  GOLD  said  today,

Last night, thanks to YOU voting, “Human” took home 3 Pill Awards last night for Best Art Direction and Best Pop Video!

I also wanted to say thanks again for everyone who joined this Fan Page and has supported my music. I can’t do it without you!

We are gonna rock 2010!!”

In a new interview, he talks about his upcoming album…

You are now hard at work on your next album, which is right now untitled. What makes the new album stand out from the past three? Can you tell fans yet what the major theme of this album will be?

“I can’t tell you too much about it yet, but I will say that it will definitely be the most dance-oriented album I’ve ever made. I’ve had the concept for it since I finished Transport Systems and its great to finally see it coming together.

One thing I can say is that this album explores the dark side a bit more than in the past. I think before I was very conscious of being a positive role model, but with this album I’ve sort of let that go being that I don’t feel the burden of representation so heavily on my shoulders anymore. I’m very excited about it and can’t wait to share it with the world.”

Justin Utley at the Stonewall this Week! Thursday January 14th

When you think of Country music, no gay icons come to mind. Country music remains one of the music industry’s largest and most profitable genres, yet is arguably still as self-contained as ever. But behind the Tim McGraws, Carrie Underwoods and Keith Urbans, there’s a Justin Utley, a boy with a guitar and a dream of becoming one of the genre’s brightest stars—who also happens to be gay.

He tells NEXT MAGAZINE,  “My music comes before my sexual preference,” he demurs, before listing the various gay-related foundations his album proceeds support including HRC and The Empire State Pride Agenda. “I’m sending my message to anyone who can apply it to their situation.” And, as an ex-Mormon from Utah who spent the first part of his life as a spiritual ascetic and the second discovering himself and his sexuality, his message is clearly one of identity and continuously evolving self-awareness—a message not so foreign to the gay ear.

Catch him  live  this week

MADONNA’S CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION – 6-City Tour Launches December 6 in New York City

Not  MADONNA.

We’re talking about THE MADONNA –
As in the VIRGIN MARY!

Over 2000 years ago in the little hillside town of Bethlehem a
miraculous birth occurred. You might think you know the real story,
but you don’t. Jesus’ mother sets the record straight with MADONNA’S CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION, a musical retelling of the birth and life of the young Jesus Christ.

This inspiring holiday show features original
music, plus so-wrong-it’s-right parodies of holiday favorites and Top 40 hits by the likes of The Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce, Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Rihanna and the more-famous Madonna.

“You could go to Irving Berlin’s White Christmas or the Radio City
Christmas Spectacular, but then how could you look at yourself in the mirror the next morning? Instead, try the holiday show that dares to  dress our Holy Mother in drag.”
– New York Observer.

Move over Britney Spears! The Madonna — as in the Virgin Mary (or
Lady MaMa, in some circles) — announces her first U.S. holiday tour in over 2000 years.

Kicking off in New York City on December 6th at
The Laurie Beechman Theater, MADONNA’S CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION tour will
be performed in 6 cities stretching from Maine to California. Tickets,  show times and venue information is available at 212-352-3101 or  Virgin Mary Live.

MADONNA’S CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION is conceived and delivered by drag
writer/performer Mimi Imfurst and composer/lyricist/arranger Mike
Pettry (winner of the 2007 Jonathan Larson and Fredrick Loewe Awards).

It features costumes by Norrell Gardner
(Project Runway, Gossip Girl),
puppets by Mark Salinas and props by Jeb Knight.

The show is the 4th annual installment of Mimi Imfurst’s Virgin Mary series, which offers insight into the psyche of the teen mother and the choices Mary had to make as a 13 year-old bride.

It has been hailed by the Catholic Advocacy Coalition as “worse than the sin of abortion” and “despicable, blasphemous and abominable trash” by DailyCatholic.org  (who never saw the show).

Described by Back Stage as
“somewhere between a plump Ricki Lake and a bawdy Bette Midler,” Mimi Imfurst has quickly established herself as one of NYC’s most outrageous, controversial, and hysterical nightlife personalities.

The inaugural production of Mary, Like A Virgin earned
Mimi Imfurst a prominent spot on the

Catholic League’s 2006 Report on Anti Catholicism and a
#2 spot on the Catholic Advocacy Coalition’s Top 10 Most Anti-Catholic People of the Year, following Dan Brown (The Da Vinci Code) in the #1 spot and beating out President George W. Bush  at #3.

New York City Gay Men’s Chorus in Financial Problems

Just like everyone else, especially the arts, The New York City Gay Men’s Chorus is struggling to stay afloat due to “severe financial problems” according to a press release from the group, which was founded in 1979 and was the first gay chorus to perform in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center, the first American gay chorus to tour Europe, and the first to have a recording contract with a major label.

Said Rick Clodfelter, Chairman of the Board of Big Apple Performing Arts, Inc., the umbrella organization for the NYCGMC: “Like so many nonprofit arts organizations in this economic downturn, we are hurting. Decreasing donations, limited resources and the rising costs of production make it more difficult than ever for a community arts organization to survive. Our goal is to raise $500,000 to enable us to retire debt, proceed with our 30th season and ensure we are better positioned to advocate for equality in the future…Artistically, we are the best we’ve been in years due to the direction of Dr. Charles Beale, former director of the London Gay Men’s Chorus, who joined us two years ago. However, NYCGMC has always been about much more than putting singers on a stage. At a time when LGBT visibility wasn’t as prevalent as it is today, the Chorus provided an opportunity for New Yorkers to see out, proud gay men on stage. Today that seems commonplace, but thirty years ago, it was revolutionary. And just as the LGBT movement has evolved, today the Chorus voices its support for marriage equality, LGBTQ youth support and other issues relevant to the community.”

According to the group, “The planned 30th anniversary season, which begins in September, features a return to Town Hall for the Holiday concert. The NYCGMC first performed there in 1980. The spring concert will be another installment of the hugely popular ‘Big Gay Sing,’ and the summer concert, ‘Addicted to Love,’ will look at both a light-hearted view of love and feature ‘Through a Glass, Darkly,’ a provocative piece about crystal meth addiction, a scourge not just to the gay community but well beyond.”

Jonny “The Gay Pimp” McGovern Debuts One-Man Comedy Show at the 13th Annual New York International Fringe Festival

Comedian Jonny McGovern, star of MTV-LOGO’s Big Gay Sketch Show, debuts a new version of his GLAAD Media Award nominated one-man show, DIRTY STUFF, at the 13th annual New York International Fringe Festival-Fringe NYC.  The limited run engagement will take place August 14th through August 30th at The Actors’ Playhouse, 100 Seventh Avenue South, between Bleecker & Christopher Streets.

What do a gay pimp, a blaxploitation movie diva, a spoiled Arab circuit boy, a trailer park superstar wannabe and closeted gay boy have in common? McGovern plays them all in this shockingly un-p.c. tour de farce. DIRTY STUFF sets the lives of these characters into loopy cartoon club crawl through a world where glamour reigns supreme and a fake Chanel bag is worth its weight in gold!

Writer/Performer Jonny McGovern is best known as a cast member on “The Big Gay Sketch Show” produced by Rosie O’Donnell and for his hilarious music videos including “Soccer Practice” and “Somethin’ for the Fellas (That like the Fellas)” which have played on MTV, VH-1 and LOGO. He is also the host of iTunes’ #1 LGBT podcast “Gay Pimpin’ with Jonny McGovern” which reaches 15,000 listeners weekly.

DIRTY STUFF, which will also feature a live DJ, is directed by Courtney Munch who helmed the original production which was nominated for “Best Gay Themed Play” by HX magazine and Best NY Stage Production by The GLAAD Media Awards.

Show times are Friday, August 14th at 10:15pm; Sunday, August 16th at 6:15pm; Wednesday, August 26th at 4:15pm; Thursday, August 27th at 7pm; and Sunday August 30th at 2:45pm.

Sir Ivan Wilzig…New York Banker Turned Singer – The Peaceman Cometh

Peaceman  (“Sir” Ivan Wilzig)  is a  banker turned musician who is best known for techno remixes of 1960s songs such as “Imagine” and “San Francisco”. He is also founder of the nonprofit Peaceman Foundation and appeared as Mr. Mitzvah on Season Two of the reality television show Who Wants to be a Superhero?.

Ivan  is the son of the late Siegbert (Siggi) Wilzig (died in January 2003), who as a penniless German Holocaust survivor earned a fortune through finance. Ivan was born in Newark and grew up in New Jersey as the oldest of the Wilzig children.  Wilzig began voice lessons as a teenager, but was discouraged by his father, who wanted his son to have a more successful career. In 2000 “Sir Ivan” abandoned his banking career to begin a career in music.

Synonymous with “Sir Ivan” Wilzig’s eccentric and hedonistic lifestyle is his lavishly decorated 12,000-square-foot  medieval-style estate in Water Mill on Long Island. Referred to as “the Castle”, it is considered by many entertainment journalists (and by the owner himself) as the “Playboy Mansion of the East Coast”.

New from his album “I AM PEACEMAN” that is breathing new life into the musical and social legacy of the 1960s and reinvented with 21st century cutting-edge style, is   “For What It’s Worth.”  The  video (classic Buffalo Springfield) is a single from the  album, which is a collection of  60’s anthems remade by Sir Ivan and remixed by all the current top talent (Eric Kupper, Tony Moran, Dj Chus, etc)- in his new genre ‘ROCKTRONICA’… all this to coincide with 40th Anniversary of WOODSTOCK in August.
