Bette Midler and Barry Manilow Back to the Bathhouse

Bette Midler and Barry Manilow go back to
their roots in bawdy tribute comedy

BETTE & BARRY: BACK TO THE BATHHOUSE
August 1 & 15 at Laurie Beechman Theatre

Bette Midler tribute artist Donna Maxon revisits the glorious 70’s
with her new cabaret show BETTE & BARRY: BACK TO THE BATHHOUSE co-written by Maxon and director Michael Schiralli. Maxon stars as the Divine Miss M, performing a hilariously bawdy act of tunes, monologues, and jokes.

The show co-stars musical director Fonda
Feingold as Barry Manilow, and the duo proudly pays homage to the
partnership that Midler and Manilow began at New York’s Continental
Baths in 1970.

BETTE & BARRY: BACK TO THE BATHHOUSE
runs Wednesdays, August 1 and 15
at 7:30 PM at the Laurie Beechman Theatre inside West Bank Cafe (407   West 42 Street at 9th Avenue).

Tickets are $20. A full dinner menu and  a full bar are available; there is a $15 per person food/drink
minimum. To purchase tickets call 212-352-3101 or visit   www.SpinCycleNYC.com target=”_blank” href=”http://www.SpinCycleNYC.com”>.

BETTE & BARRY: BACK TO THE BATHHOUSE is a theatrical imagining of
current-day Midler and Manilow returning for “one more show, for old
times sake” at the legendary Continental Bathhouse.  Incorporating
songs from throughout both Midler’s career (Wind Beneath My Wings,
Delta Dawn, Friends, and more) and Manilow’s (Copacabana, Looks Like
We Made It, Mandy, and others), the banter between the pair touches on
highlights of their career, including a touching reminiscence of
friends from their bathhouse days lost to AIDS.  While Maxon has a
long career as a Bette Midler tribute artist, this show marks the
theatrical debut of Fonda Feingold (a woman) as Barry Manilow —
America’s foremost professional Barry Manilow drag king!

Priscilla to Close June 24th – Gay Pride Day

The Broadway musical “Priscilla Queen of the Desert,”  will
play its final show at the Palace Theater on June 24. Gay Pride Day.

I thought it run forever.  🙁

The musical, which is directed by Simon Phillips and features a book by
Mr. Elliott and Allan Scott as well as a score of disco-friendly pop
hits, opened in March 2011 and won the Tony Award that year for its
costume design by Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner.

Tony Sheldon, who
played the role of the transsexual Bernadette – on Broadway as well as
previous productions in Australia, Toronto and London’s West End – was
also nominated for leading actor in a musical. “Priscilla” will have
played 23 previews and 526 performances at its closing.

A spokesman for
the show said that it would not recoup its capitalization costs, which
totaled $15 million for the Broadway run and a pre-Broadway tryout in
Toronto.

Ricky Martin Spices Things up in Evita Revival

Ricky Martin is  receiving some  positive reviews for his charming turn as Che in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

According to early reviews, Ricky Martin is all swoon-inducing charm in the Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita.

Unless you ask the bitter and jaded Rex Reed!  Reed describes the production as “sprawling, overproduced, clumsily
directed and strangely emotionless.”  He writes that Andrew Lloyd
Webber’s music is “derivative” and that Tim Rice’s lyrics are
“repetitive,” reducing the story of Eva Peron to a “second-rate
operetta.”

The revival, which opened at New York’s Marriot Marquis recently, has
already garnered plenty of buzz for its casting of openly gay Martin as
the revolutionary Che. But now that early reviews have heaped praise
upon Martin (one review called his performance “a supernova of
charisma”), the musical will no doubt attract even more ticket-buyers. – Ticket sales have been brisk so far.

David Drake – My Tawny Valentine

David Drake is  playwright, stage director, actor and author. He is  probably best known as the author and original performer of The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me, for which he received a Village Voice Obie Award, a 1994 Drama-Logue Award for “Outstanding Solo Performance.” – But he has done so many things over the span of his career.  – That sexy vision of him, up onstage, shirtless with a leather jacket,  is burned in mind forever!

Now, David, as his alter ego “Tawny Heatherton,” is bringing his new show, “My Tawny Valentine”
to NYC’s Laurie Beechman Theatre. This show marks the unheralded return
of Tawny Heatherton, a lovably eccentric showbiz survivor and “one hit
wonder” of the disco zeitgeist of the early 1980s. Tawny brings her
singular blonde-swept brand of sunny, funny optimism while recalling
stories of wandering the globe performing her disco “hit,” her
headline-grabbing turn as the unwitting “Pyro Girl of Long Island,” her
short-lived stint as a “Hee-Haw Honey,” and reuniting with her long-lost
aunt Joey Heatherton at the Mohegan Sun Resort & Casino.

“My Tawny Valentine” plays Feb 17, 24, & March 2 at 7:30pm at the Laurie Beechman Theater (407 West 42nd Street, between 9th & 10th Avenue).

Tickets are $20 plus a $15 food/drink minimum and can be purchased by calling 212-352-3101 or visit SpinCycleNYC.com..

Our dear friend Adam, from the popular site, Call Me Adam,  caught up with David and interviewed him this week!

AVANTGARDE the Musical Video with Restored Images

A blast from the past!   1982  was the year. The legendary  play  Avantgarde was holding court on Broadway.  It’s debut in 1982 at Union Square was a complete success with sell out
crowds! In fact, the show was such an attraction that it was moved to
the F Sharp Theater on 51st and Broadway.

Starring Ernest Kohl.  Now  30 years  later  the CD had been restored and is available – and hundreds of images have been restored and made into an 11 minute  slideshow video with music.

The ‘AVANTGARDE’ original cast soundtrack recording has recently been
pulled out of the vault and is now fully digitally restored and
re-mastered! And available online for about $10!

AVANTGARDE the Musical on CD this Month!

The Classic Broadway HIT Musical “AVANTGARDE”
Soundtrack… will finally be released via Famous
Records/EMG/UMG INC.

New York singer/songwriter Ernest Kohl explains, “When I was 16  I starred in a Broadway musical that had a huge wonderful
successful opening  and  was eventually moved uptown to B-way & was selling
out every night to great reviews. It was  AVANTGARDE.

Well, Actors Equity unfortunately went
in to new rules  and  4 big musicals closed.  Ours was one of them- the Original Cast Recording was
never released and because of that, it put a lot of actors out of work.

It is very sad, that over the years  ALL of the guys in the original cast,  outside of me,  have passed away from
AIDS.

All the woman are still living and  many have great
careers & TONY’s now!

 I promised my best
friends on their deathbeds,  I would get this Cast Album out- Somehow, some day. And over the years, this has been my goal.

Finally on December  31st – The Original Cast Album of “AVANTGARDE” will be released!  I am so excited. It has
been fully restored & remastered & with a special bonus  track
added (it did not fit on vinyl back then).

 Now it will
finally be out on CD & on Digial Download for the world to experience it’s
magic.
I succeeded in  my mission.

There is even talk of a revival if the
album does well…it would have to be re-done & up-dated. But that’s why
this legendary Cast album (that’s now has huge cult appeal ) must come
out & we had so many requests for it.

It is exciting that the original Cast Musical
“AVANTGARDE” will be released & the beautiful voices of our lost men
to Aids will finally be heard by the world and I was able to keep my promise to
them! We are dedicating it in memorial trubite to the guys lost.”

THIS ALBUM IS RELEASED IN MEMORY OF: CHRIS SEPPE,
CHARLES CARTER, DARYL CARPENTER, STEVEN LEWIS & JEFFREY

Party at Priscilla with their unique Concierge Services

THIS PAST JUNE, New York rejoiced and celebrated the passing of the legalization of Gay Marriage!

At Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, at the Palace Theatre, one evening after a performance, a young man and his boyfriend took the stage. Clutching the mic,
voice and hands trembling, Yuri Rodriguez attempted a speech. “Ever
since I met you,” he said, “I’ve never been happier and I’ve never felt
so much love and—”

Rather than gush further, Mr. Rodriguez fell to one knee and whipped
out a ring. He had been nervous, he explained last week, not just that
Stephen Troiano might decline his proposal but that “somebody in the
audience might yell something stupid.” He had nothing to fear. The
crowd went mad, and roared with applause!

This summer, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert began offering a
series of wedding packages through its “concierge service.”
How cool is that?!  For a
nominal fee, couples can arrange on-stage engagements, wedding
receptions, bachelorette parties or a “dance-on” cameo at the top of the
second act.

PRISCILLA has proved they are much more than just a play.
It’s a party. It’s a celebration!

Make it a proposal to remember... Take your honey up on stage after the
show and pop the question in front of the cast and audience! At
PRISCILLA, we’re all about the grand gestures!

Start married life off in style! Every Monday, newly hitched couples can
make their Broadway debut together with featured “dance-on” roles
during a number in PRISCILLA’s 2nd Act.

Book a Holiday Party at Priscilla.

Add a cast album for each member of your party for only $10 per person.

Make your group look a bit more glam with feather boas for $3 per person.

Holiday Cheer – Group members get drink tickets at $10 per drink, per person, with $9 refills.

There are lots of ways to make your event special.  Check out the amazing and talented Concierge Services at Priscilla!

Maybe I can propose to Nick Adams……..
