WE THREE LIZA’S at Joes Pub July 15th

Escape the New York summer heat with “Christmas in July” at Joe’s Pub at The Public where Chicago’s About Face Theatre in association with John Sanders presents a concert version of WE THREE LIZAS, the new hit holiday musical that wowed Chicago audiences this past winter.  WE THREE LIZAS plays Joe’s Pub (425 Lafayette St., New York) one night only on Monday, July 15 at 7 pm.

Tickets, priced at $20, are available at www.joespub.com and 212-967-7555.

Created by Scott Bradley (book/lyrics) and Alan Schmuckler (music/additional lyrics), WE THREE LIZAS is
a magical musical fairy tale set in the queerest of lands in which an
embittered designer’s mid-life crisis leads to divine intervention by
Liza Minnelli. And Liza Minnelli. And Liza Minnelli.

The Joe’s Pub concert is staged by director/choreographer Devanand Janki (Zanna, Don’t!), featuring an expanded score and brand new book. The concert cast includes David Beach (UrinetownMamma Mia), Veronica Reyes-How (Rent), Gabrielle Ruiz (In the Heights), Michael Rosen (West Side Story, Nikolai and the Others) and Danielle Plisz (We Three Lizas original cast). Additional casting to be announced.

Garnering sold-out houses and critical acclaim, About Face Theatre’s world premiere production of WE THREE LIZAS premiered in December 2012 at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Garage.

BEST GAY CHICAGO.com said, “BRILLIANT. This is a Must see show!”

Time Out Chicago said “We loved this holiday tale,” naming We Three Lizas the #1 Critic’s Pick in both its Theatre and Gay & Lesbian sections, calling the show “undeniably original and joyously queer.”

Chicago Reader’s Culture Vulture called it “the holiday musical comedy of my dreams” and NewCity hailed its score as “a buoyant gift wrapped in a melodic, dramatically well-conceived bow.”

Larry Kramer to Receive special Tony Award June 9th, in New York

Larry Kramer is a playwright, author, public health advocate, and LGBT rights activist.  Kramer introduced a controversial and confrontational style in his 1978 novel Faggots, which earned mixed reviews but emphatic denunciations from the gay community for his portrayal of shallow, promiscuous gay relationships in the 1970s.

Kramer witnessed the spread of the disease that became known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) among his friends in 1980, and co-founded the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), which has become the largest private organization to assist people living with AIDS in the world. Not content with the social services GMHC provided, Kramer expressed his frustration with bureaucratic paralysis and the apathy of gay men to the AIDS crisis by writing a play titled The Normal Heart which was produced at The Public Theater in New York City in 1985. His political activism extended to the founding of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) in 1987, a direct action protest organization widely credited with changing public health policy and widespread perception of people living with AIDS (PWAs) and awareness of HIV and AIDS-related diseases. He was such an important part of our gay history and is now being recognized for his amazing contributions.

 Kramer will receive this year’s
Isabelle Stevenson Award, a non-competitive Tony award given to an
individual from the theater community who has made a substantial
contribution on behalf of humanitarian, social service or charitable
organizations.

“Writers who are activists are very rarely taken seriously as
artists,” Kramer said in an interview. “I look upon this recognition as
acknowledgment that a serious writer can also be a serious activist, and
no less an artist for it.”

Kramer, who will turn 78 years old in June, won a 2011 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play, for the revival of “The Normal Heart” on Broadway, which starred Joe Mantello, Ellen Barkin and John Benjamin Hickey.

Kramer also wrote the screenplay for a coming HBO film based on the
play, which will be directed by Ryan Murphy (“Glee”) and star Mark
Ruffalo as Ned Weeks, the young activist at the center of the story.

“We are so excited about it,” Kramer said of the film, which begins
shooting in New York in June. “It’s much bigger than the play. It’s the
same basic plot but one is able to open it up and show much more about
AIDS and also explore the character of the doctor [which will be played
by Julia Roberts] which I wanted to do in the play, but it didn’t work.” –  Barbra Streisand wanted to make to film and had bought the rights  – but she  struggled with Kramer for over 15 years, then gave the rights back to him.

Ross Mathews Takes a Bite out of New York City in May

As
a young kid growing up in a farm town, Ross Mathews might as well have
wished for a pet unicorn or a magical calorie-free cookie tree to grow
in his front yard.

Either of those far-fetched fantasies would’ve
probably been more likely to come true than his real dream: Working on
television in Hollywood, California. I mean, seriously, that stuff just
doesn’t happen to people like Ross. But guess what. It totally did.

Who knew – everyone would fall in love with Ross? We have been watching Ross’s rise to fame and it is so great to see a very gay man!  Rise to such great heights. He is just so likable, honest and  real. The public responds well to him.

Ross Mathews, is now one of the most in-demand television personalities today. Ross has traveled the world as a Tonight Show correspondent,
interviewing everyone from Oscar winners to British royalty, quickly
becoming a late-night television  staple and a favorite of the
public.

Currently, Ross continues his Tonight Show correspondent duties, is a weekly regular panelist and occasional guest host on E!’s hit late-night talk show Chelsea Lately and a fixture on the E! Networks’ live red carpet award show coverage and E! News.

Last month Ross worked on a talk show pilot,  produced by Chelsea Handler’s Borderline Amazing Productions that Mathews  hosted, wrote and co-produced!

NOW COMES THE BOOK AND TOUR!
Ross will be at the Gramercy Theater in NY on Tuesday May 7, 8:00pm.  He
will be in New York that week doing press, as May 7 is the official
release date of the book as well!

The MAN UP  book will out May 7th.  The book, Man Up!: Tales of My Delusional Self-Confidence , will
be Mathews’ first and include a humorous collection of observations and
personal stories and takes readers inside Mathews’ personal journey as a
super fan, revealing the most embarrassing and hilarious moments of his
small town life and big city adventures, and how he managed to turn an
obsession with pop culture into one on one interactions with celebrities
like Paltrow, Tiffani-Amber Theissen, Madonna, and Michelle Kwan [to
name a few] without ever having a single restraining order issued
against him. It also will feature a foreword by actress Gwyneth Paltrow and an afterword by late-night host Chelsea Handler.

“Ross has been a friend of mine for 10 years, and this book is
hilariously sad, hilariously naïve and hilariously gay. I love this
book,” Handler said.

“The book is about my experiences, thus far, in
life. Growing up in a small town and then navigating Hollywood. The
theme that’s been running through that is something I talk about on
Chelsea a lot; what I’ve coined as “man-up.” I think I always try to
man-up,”
explains Ross.

“What I mean by that is, understanding you are what you are and
you’re going to have your flaws, but rather than heaping a lot of
negativity on whatever makes you different or whatever makes you unique,
really shine the light on that and use it to make you stand out, I
think that’s just something innately that I’ve done my entire life,
totally on accident. I probably owe it to my mother, because she was
effusive with her compliments, even when they were undeserved. I would
love to spread that message. Like, come on, life is short you gotta love
yourself. Get over it and let’s keep movin’ on to make a difference in
the world.

Mathews
currently lives in Los Angeles with his partner, Salvador, and their
two rescue dogs, Louise and Mijo. When not working on his many projects,
Mathews is a strong supporter of the Human Rights Campaign, speaking at
many of their nationwide events and he received their Visibility Award
in 2011.

When once asked, Why do you think visibility is so important for our community?

He says, “Oh my gosh, it’s like crazy, super, big time important!
I grew up in a teeny farm town in Mount Vernon, Washington, and I was a
little gay kid and I didn’t know what it meant to grow up to be a big
gay grown-up. I didn’t know any gay people and back then I didn’t see
any gay people on TV. I didn’t learn until I went to college that I
could be a totally happy grown up, loud, proud, out gay person. It’s a
different world now, in part, not to toot my tooter, partly because
people like me are on TV, out, loud and proud for a decade now!”

Michael Urie Plays Barbra Streisand in Buyer and Cellar

Alex More has a story to tell.  A
struggling actor in L.A., Alex takes a job working in the Malibu
basement of  beloved megastar, Barbra Streisand!

(Barbra’s basement is FULL of her
collections and resembles a mini mall!)

One day, the Lady Herself comes
downstairs to play.  It feels like real bonding in the basement, but
will their relationship ever make it upstairs?

Buyer & Cellar is an outrageous comedy about the price of fame, the cost of things,

and the oddest of odd jobs.

Michael Urie will be  playing Barbra Streisand Off Broadway, and
every other character in Buyer &
    Cellar
, playwright Jonathan Tolins new one-man play which opened  recently at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater. An exceptionally gifted comedian
and stage performer, Urie does the diva justice—and she’s just one piece of the
    story.

Tolins’ play is well crafted, hilarious, and completely
accessible to folks who know nothing about Barbra Streisand. Of course, the
show’s success is thanks in no small part to Urie’s charming, whirlwind
performance. I spoke to Michael about his work on the play, his choice of gay
roles, and his personal feelings on the lady of the house.

    Michigan, her native state.

Fans nervous that this departure means retirement for Stritch need not worry! The incomparable star told The New York Times,
What actor would ever say they’re done? I loved being on Broadway, but
performing has become exhausting, and I just don’t want to live in New
    York anymore… I just don’t have the energy, darling. I’m 88! I don’t
look or always feel it, but I’m 88!

Ballet With a Twist at New Yorks Biggest Gay Club, XL

In the wake of a scintillating fall season that
included appearances at New York City’s
    Beacon Theatre and New Jersey’s
    new Hamilton Stage,
    Ballets with a Twist,
    the hot next-generation ballet company,
    announces
a new performance date for the intoxicating evening-length dance experience
    Cocktail Hour.

    (
    Photo: Nico Malvaldi)

On January 13th at 7 pm, cocktail culturists will enjoy
the full suite of delicious dances at the company’s Manhattan home, XL Nightclub and Cabaret, one of the sleekest nightlife
hotspots in the city. Several of the dances will feature live musical
accompaniment by some of New York’s
most celebrated musicians, all of whom can be heard on the official Cocktail Hour soundtrack. Trombonist Peter
Zummo will add an extra tropical twist to “Mai Tai,” singer Barbara
Morillo will sweeten up “Shirley Temple,” and Deni Bonet will bring
“Mint Julep” back to its Southern roots with her finest fiddling.
Peter Valentine and Tabitha Fair will end the show on a high note, adding their
soulful vocals to the crowd-favorite “Holy Water.” Ballets with a
Twist fans will also delight in the long-awaited return of the majestic
    “Margarita.

Conceived and choreographed by celebrated dance-maker Marilyn Klaus — whose eclectic
background ranges from vaudeville and show dancing to Isadora Duncan and
    classical ballet — Cocktail Hour
is a sassy suite of dances, each inspired by a well-known beverage. The show
both reinvents ballet and pays respect to the rich creativity of cocktail
culture, launching the Martini, Gimlet, Manhattan,
and more off the menu and onto the stage

Cocktail Hour features original music by Stephen Gaboury, who has collaborated with
Klaus for over 20 years. Gaboury’s music has been featured in film and on
television. In 2004, he received a Grammy nomination for his work with pop/rock
legend Lauper, with whom he recently contributed as co-writer for selections in
her new musical Kinky Boots. He has also performed with many A-listers
including Patti Labelle, Suzanne Vega and Ute Lemper. Catherine Zehr  is the artistic force
behind the glamorous costume design. Her exquisite creations evoke the origins
and spirit of each libation with vivid colors and embellishments.

Critics and audience members agree: Cocktail Hour is an artistically seductive
must-see. The Huffington Post raves that Klaus is
“blasting the boundaries between high art and entertainment,” and
that her style is a distinctive mix of “Hollywood glitz and New York polish,”
while The New York Times praises
her as “witty and fantastic.” Recent performances also caught the
attention of The Wall Street Journal
    and New York City’s
    PIX11 Morning News.

“What a show. All of them, the young and the not-so, all with stars in their eyes. But then, their audience was equally afflicted. It was worth it. Had a couple of stars in my own eyes”- Gene Paul, Theater Scene
UNDERWORLD VI will include Broadway understudies Nick Cartell (Scandalous, Jesus Christ Superstar), Elizabeth DeRosa (Mary Poppins), KJ Hippensteel (The Book of Mormon), Amanda Lea LaVergne (Annie, Grease) and Billie Wildrick (Scandalous). With MTWorkers Carol Hickey (Barrier Island), Heather Massie (Flashbacks), Maureen O’Boyle (The Oath, Good Lonely People), David Stallings (A Home Across the Ocean), and Susan Wallack (Good Lonely People).
All proceeds from Underworld VI go to funding MTWorks current 2012-13 Season, which includes the 2013 National NewBorn Festival (February 2013 at the City College of New York) and a new adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, adapted and directed by Glory Kadigan (March 2013 at the WorkShop Theater).
All tickets are $20 (+2 drink minimum, cash bar) and are available online at www.mtworks.org. Tickets may also be purchased in-person at The Triad NYC half hour prior to Showtime, cash only.

Chris March Presents BUTT-CRACKER SUITE for the Holidays

JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS!

The World Premiere of CHRIS MARCH’S
    BUTT-CRACKER SUITE!
Written, directed, and designed by Chris March
(“Project Runway” and Bravo’s “Mad Fashion”), performances of this
limited Off-Broadway engagement run November 24 – December 29 at HERE
(145 Avenue of Americas at Dominick Street, one block south of Spring
    Street).
CHRIS MARCH’S BUTT-CRACKER SUITE! is an outrageous re-creation of “The
Nutcracker” set, of course, in a trailer park. Dancing pink flamingos, cans of Spam, and ugly Christmas sweaters come to life on Christmas Eve… but no Sugar Plum Fairies or Snowflakes in this version!
March promises to brighten your holiday season by turning “trash” into this
season’s most unique and outrageous show. With a lot of fun music, over-the-top costumes, fabulous dancers, and just a hint of blasphemy, this show is the tacky gift that keeps on giving!
The production will star Sara Brophy, Michael Dauer, Joshua Dean,Vassiliki Ellwood, Ashley Munzek, Andrea Palesh, Kristen Schoen-Rene and Dana Winkle, as well as Chris March himself. The production team includes Benjamin Franklin (choreography), Andrea Purcigliotti of Damage Studios (scenery), JennyB/ShadyLady (lighting), Neelam Vaswani(production manager) and Nathan K. Claus (stage manager).

March returns to his theater roots with this new holiday comedy.
Drawing upon his special brand of no-holds-barred outrageousness,
March continues to parody pop culture from his roles in “Christmas
with the Crawfords” to his many television appearances. For more info

Pink Milk at New York City Fringe Fest Aug 10-19

An alluring drama infused with dance, PINK MILK is based on the true story of Alan Turing –
the man basically responsible for ending WWII in Britain but later
criminally charged for being gay who chose chemical castration over
prison and whose death is shrouded in mystery.

    Movement, nosebleeds,
electronica, and a talking daisy PINK MILK, inspired by the father of Computer Science, explodes themes of creation, destruction and eternal love.

2012 is internationally known as Alan Turing Year as
it is the centennial anniversary of his birth (6/23/1912) and while
most of the world-wide celebrations will focus on Turing’s technological
and mathematic contributions, PINK MILK explores the uncelebrated side of his genius which ultimately led to his untimely death. This past February, PINK MILK premiered in Chicago where we shared the story of Alan Turing with a combined audience of 700 over
    three nights of performances.

Alan is a lonely, gay, Snow White obsessed boy genius who meets
Christopher, a gentle boy with a passion for piano as deep as Alan’s
passion for pi.  Their intellects clash in a symphony of science and
art.  And as soon as he is there, Christopher is gone.  Alan grows older
building technology to replace his lost love.  Until the fateful day
Alan meets Arnold, a reckless boy seemingly with a passion for Alan.
But Arnold’s sensual and supposed princely promise leads to the poisoned
apple that causes Alan’s life to spiral out of control.  Through
movement, poetry and music, PINK MILK is an experience that explores a
rich fantasy world while navigating complex topics from our present
reality.  Remounted after a successful Chicago run, White Elephant is
proud to bring PINK MILK to the 16th Annual New York International
Fringe Festival – FringeNYC and Chicago Fringe Festival.

PINK MILK: a new magical tragedy inspired by the life of Alan Turing coming to FringeNYC August 10 – 19!

Kinky Boots, the new musical that brings together four-time Tony® Award-winner Harvey Fierstein (Book) and Grammy® Award-winning Cyndi Lauper (Music & Lyrics), will have its pre-Broadway world premiere in Chicago this fall.  Directed and choreographed by Tony® Award-winner Jerry Mitchell, Kinky Boots will play the Bank of America Theatre (18 West Monroe Street, Chicago, IL) beginning October 2 through November 4, 2012, in anticipation of a 2013 Broadway opening.

In Kinky Boots, Charlie Price is forced to step in and save his family’s shoe factory in Northern England, following the sudden death of his father. Help comes from the unlikeliest angel, a fabulous drag performer named Lola.
