“Ask Not”– Free documentary Screening at NY Public Library

It’s barely one year past the anniversary of Obama’s monumental repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and the subject is still stirring controversy.

On Sunday, January 29th, the New York Public Library will host a screening of the 2008 PBS documentary Ask Not, a compelling film that explores the effects of the US military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gay and lesbian soldiers and service members.

This film exposes the political battles that led to passage of the law, and investigates the societal shifts that have occurred since then. Interviews with current and veteran gay soldiers reveal how “don’t ask, don’t tell” affects them during their tours of duty, and details the struggle they face as they live a double life.

This screening is part of the weekly Sunday afternoon film program held at the Mid-Manhattan branch of the New York Public Library. They will be held at 2 pm on the 6th floor of the branch, located at 40th Street and 5th Avenue.
Other films include:

  • January 8: Vanishing of the Bees, edited by Ellen Page, this documentary examines the mysterious disappearance of entire honeybee populations across the US, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Called Colony Collapse Disorder, the phenomenon has far-reaching effects on the production of hundreds of fruits and vegetables. The film explores the link between human activity and the welfare of the earth.
  • January 15: Scrabylon, filmed primarily during the World SCRABBLE Championships in Las Vegas, this documentary delves deep into the competitive and colorful world of tournament SCRABBLE. Interviews with players from around the globe address the timeless allure of the popular word game.
  • January 22: Bag It, follows “everyman” Jeb Berrier as he travels the world, investigating the systematic effects of our use of plastic on our oceans, environment, and bodies. Using the ubiquitous plastic bag as a touchpoint, Berrier hones in on our role in a system which prizes convenience over thoughtfulness, and the effect this has on our oceans, environment, and bodies. This documentary comes at a great time, as Seattle just recently banned plastic bags: READ MORE

Up next month: The Films of Pedro Almodovar!

Almodóvar is arguably the most successful and internationally known Spanish filmmaker of his generation. His films, marked by complex narratives, employ the codes of melodrama and use elements of pop culture, popular songs, irreverent humor,
strong colors and glossy décor. Desire, passion, family and identity are
among Almodóvar’s most prevalent themes. His films enjoy a worldwide
following and he has become a major figure on the stage of world cinema.

AVANTGARDE the Musical Video with Restored Images

A blast from the past!   1982  was the year. The legendary  play  Avantgarde was holding court on Broadway.  It’s debut in 1982 at Union Square was a complete success with sell out
crowds! In fact, the show was such an attraction that it was moved to
the F Sharp Theater on 51st and Broadway.

Starring Ernest Kohl.  Now  30 years  later  the CD had been restored and is available – and hundreds of images have been restored and made into an 11 minute  slideshow video with music.

The ‘AVANTGARDE’ original cast soundtrack recording has recently been
pulled out of the vault and is now fully digitally restored and
re-mastered! And available online for about $10!

AVANTGARDE the Musical on CD this Month!

The Classic Broadway HIT Musical “AVANTGARDE”
Soundtrack… will finally be released via Famous
Records/EMG/UMG INC.

New York singer/songwriter Ernest Kohl explains, “When I was 16  I starred in a Broadway musical that had a huge wonderful
successful opening  and  was eventually moved uptown to B-way & was selling
out every night to great reviews. It was  AVANTGARDE.

Well, Actors Equity unfortunately went
in to new rules  and  4 big musicals closed.  Ours was one of them- the Original Cast Recording was
never released and because of that, it put a lot of actors out of work.

It is very sad, that over the years  ALL of the guys in the original cast,  outside of me,  have passed away from
AIDS.

All the woman are still living and  many have great
careers & TONY’s now!

 I promised my best
friends on their deathbeds,  I would get this Cast Album out- Somehow, some day. And over the years, this has been my goal.

Finally on December  31st – The Original Cast Album of “AVANTGARDE” will be released!  I am so excited. It has
been fully restored & remastered & with a special bonus  track
added (it did not fit on vinyl back then).

 Now it will
finally be out on CD & on Digial Download for the world to experience it’s
magic.
I succeeded in  my mission.

There is even talk of a revival if the
album does well…it would have to be re-done & up-dated. But that’s why
this legendary Cast album (that’s now has huge cult appeal ) must come
out & we had so many requests for it.

It is exciting that the original Cast Musical
“AVANTGARDE” will be released & the beautiful voices of our lost men
to Aids will finally be heard by the world and I was able to keep my promise to
them! We are dedicating it in memorial trubite to the guys lost.”

New York Gay Couple get Letter from Obama

Apparently President Obama sent Matt Katz and his husband a letter after they were married, congratulating him. The letter is on Matt’s Facebook page.

Buzzfeed writes:

They have no idea why they received the card.

Matt says, “I’m not sure why the letter
got sent to us. Aaron and I were married on July 24th at Borough Hall.
However, we had our wedding ceremony on July 23rd at my dad’s house the
day before. Maybe word got out that we were outlaws for a day
?”

It will be interesting to see if more letters surface….

Craig Pomranz Talks the New York Cabaret Scene with Channel13

CRAIG POMRANZ was recently asked to write an OP-ED piece on Cabaret, for Metro Focus / Channel 13. …

The word “cabaret” conjures up images ranging from smoke-filled rooms
(remember smoke?) to lap dances. We may have lost the smoke, but
cabaret is back in a big way in New York.

In a world where music is everywhere, on your iPod, cell phone and in
TV shows like “American Idol” and “Glee,” the unsung venues are the
cabaret rooms. These rooms include long-standing uptown music rooms
like Café Carlyle and the Algonquin Hotel’s Oak Room and less highfalutin venues like the Metropolitan Room on West 22nd Street, which offers a roster of both famous names and newcomers, as well as Don’t Tell Mama on West 46th Street and the Laurie Beechman Theater on West 42nd Street.

The artists who play at Joe’s Pub and the City Winery
meet the growing demand for live music in a more intimate space.
Burlesque seems to have been adopted by the 20-something set with rooms
like The Triad and Duane Park Café
(great food by one of my favorite chefs, Richard Overholt). A number of
other venues in the East Village/Lower East Side and Brooklyn,
including The Box and Galapagos (respectively) offer a diverse calendar of acts.

In these rooms performers strive for the chance to communicate with
an audience. Nothing’s needed except the singer, the song, a musician or
two, and the give and take of the audience. It’s the rare opportunity
to express yourself with lyrics that mean something and music that
shapes those lyrics indelibly. You can explore a vast treasury of great
songs and can take a familiar pop song and give it new life and meaning.
It is the job of a singer to convey the story behind the music. I can’t
tell you how many times someone has come up after a show to say they
had never really heard the lyrics to a pop song until I had sung it.

As I took to the stage there was a dubious silence, but once I began singing, I started hearing, ‘you tell ‘em, baby.’

Part of the fun of cabaret is how audiences differ so much depending on the location and venue.

I was the first white male to sing at Sweetwater’s, an R&B club
in New York. It was fun because I got to work with the house band who
had toured with Aretha Franklin. As I took to the stage there was a
dubious silence, but once I began singing, I started hearing, “you tell
‘em, baby,” and “sing it child!” It took me a minute to get used to this
participatory crowd, where you would sing and they would answer you
right back — but I loved it!

In London, the audiences seem like very serious students, silent
throughout the song and until the pianist has played his very last note
and then politely applauding;  afterwards they tell you how moved they
were. In Los Angeles, they sigh audibly and want to stay after the show
to discuss in detail every song you chose and where you found it. In New
York, they heckle (good-naturedly!) and, if they like it, applaud
enthusiastically even before the song is over. It’s all wonderful. And
you never know who you’re going to meet…

Early on, I had gotten a lot of attention from some record labels,
and I was working at a club called Mickey’s with famed singers Karen Akers and Cissy Houston.
Bob Feiden of Arista Records asked me to stay for Cissy’s show to get
my take on her daughter, whom Cissy was introducing in the act. Into the
spotlight stepped this pretty teenager with minimal makeup wearing a
sheath dress. Barely moving, she sang a very pure version of Barry
Manilow’s “All the Time.” Her beauty and simplicity were amazing. It
was, of course, Whitney Houston.

So many people think they can sing, and do, that it’s important that
the world of cabaret offers them a venue, especially in New York.

You
don’t have to have a beautiful voice.  Some of the greats had little
range but were all soul. Frank Sinatra says he learned it all from Mabel Mercer, who often talked her way through a song. Insiders hail Fred Astaire
as a great singer, and some of the finest songs were written for him
(“The Way You Look Tonight” for example). He had a small voice but
exquisite rhythm, timing and a reserved emotional quality that could be
heartbreaking.

What prepares you to be a singer? Life!

What art form is more
immediate, able to change from night to night according to musical
fashion or even the headlines? In a world full of noise and clatter,
people yearn for the kind of intimacy a small music room provides. Like
all live performance, you never know what you’re going to get…But it’s
oh so worth the visit. So go out and support live music, be it a
cabaret, a piano bar or any other venue. Let yourself be transported,
and have a cocktail while you’re at it. Cabaret is a key part of New
York’s culture.

Craig Pomranz
is an actor, singer, dancer, recording artist and song stylist who
sings internationally. His new show in New York is “Love and the Clock”
at The Metropolitan Room.

World AIDS Day Event: Spotlight on The Starlite Lounge Dec 1

World AIDS Day Event:
Spotlight on The Starlite Lounge

Recently closed Black-owned Brooklyn gay bar gets new life in this documentary screening featuring talkback with the bar’s owners and former patrons
On Thursday, December 1 at 6:30 PM, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center commemorates World AIDS Day by proudly presenting documentarians Kate Kunath and Sasha Wortzel in conversation with Dennis Parrott and Linda King, owners of the legendary Starlite Lounge.

In 1959, a decade prior to Manhattan’s Stonewall riots, the Starlite Lounge opened in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, as a non-discriminatory establishment for gay people of color.

A half-century later, the neighborhood and the gay community were shocked when the oldest, Black-owned, LGBT establishment was given notice to vacate and was ultimately forced to close in 2010.

In honor of World AIDS Day, The Center will focus on how the Starlite became a refuge and organizing point in response to the AIDS epidemic. The filmmakers will share key excerpts of their documentary-in-progress, Starlite, and talk with former resident performer Lady Jasmine and long-time patrons about what the Starlite meant to the community, especially in the early days of the epidemic.

Also featured will be the organizers of the AIDS Memorial Park and learning center currently being proposed for the triangle site opposite the former St. Vincent’s Hospital. The proposed location sits in the middle of the neighborhood, the site of significant AIDS epidemic organizing: from the first AIDS ward at St. Vincent’s Hospital to the founding of ACT UP and other advocacy organizations at the Center.

Party at Priscilla with their unique Concierge Services

THIS PAST JUNE, New York rejoiced and celebrated the passing of the legalization of Gay Marriage!

At Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, at the Palace Theatre, one evening after a performance, a young man and his boyfriend took the stage. Clutching the mic,
voice and hands trembling, Yuri Rodriguez attempted a speech. “Ever
since I met you,” he said, “I’ve never been happier and I’ve never felt
so much love and—”

Rather than gush further, Mr. Rodriguez fell to one knee and whipped
out a ring. He had been nervous, he explained last week, not just that
Stephen Troiano might decline his proposal but that “somebody in the
audience might yell something stupid.” He had nothing to fear. The
crowd went mad, and roared with applause!

This summer, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert began offering a
series of wedding packages through its “concierge service.”
How cool is that?!  For a
nominal fee, couples can arrange on-stage engagements, wedding
receptions, bachelorette parties or a “dance-on” cameo at the top of the
second act.

PRISCILLA has proved they are much more than just a play.
It’s a party. It’s a celebration!

Make it a proposal to remember... Take your honey up on stage after the
show and pop the question in front of the cast and audience! At
PRISCILLA, we’re all about the grand gestures!

Start married life off in style! Every Monday, newly hitched couples can
make their Broadway debut together with featured “dance-on” roles
during a number in PRISCILLA’s 2nd Act.

Book a Holiday Party at Priscilla.

Add a cast album for each member of your party for only $10 per person.

Make your group look a bit more glam with feather boas for $3 per person.

Holiday Cheer – Group members get drink tickets at $10 per drink, per person, with $9 refills.

There are lots of ways to make your event special.  Check out the amazing and talented Concierge Services at Priscilla!

Maybe I can propose to Nick Adams……..

Security at Zuccotti Call Joey Boots A FAGGOT!

The Occupy Wall Street encampment is gone, but the movement lives on.
What nobody knows is just how long it can survive without a place to
call home after police hauled away demonstrators in a late night raid.

New
York’s Zuccotti Park, the privately owned park where protesters against
the excesses of capitalism had been camped out since mid-September, was
a rallying cry — a symbol of defiance against a government and a
society that the protesters wanted to overthrow.

As the park was being cleaned up, Videographer , blogger and New York personality Joey Boots, a 6 year military veteran who has appeared on The Howard Stern Show, was filming down at Zuccotti Park.

These guys in vests in Zuccotti Park were ordering anyone who stopped on
the public sidewalk to look to move along and so I and others wanted to
know who they were.
” he  says.

One of the guys, later identified as working for Brookfield Properties which owns Zuccotti Park, made the unfortunate mistake of saying “Your fly’s open, faggot.”

Everybody has a dream. Most of us are only willing to go so far to see it materialize and often find ourselves waiting for the right opportunity to come to us. No, they were determined to get it into the hands of their idol and on the 25th Anniversary of Dollywood, no less.

“WE  grew up listening to Dolly’s music and always thought she was an amazing person. So why not write a screenplay about her, and go on a cross country roadtrip to try to put it in her hands! “       say the Lane Twins, Gary and Larry.

And that’s just what they did.

And the result is An amazing film and journey   about courage and acceptance.

New York’s Village Halloween Parade Voted Best Event in the World

The Village Halloween Parade began in 1973 when a local mask maker organized a neighborhood walk for his children and their friends. After the second year, Theater for the New City stepped in and began producing the event on a larger scale as part of their City in the Streets program. After the third year, the Parade became its own not-for-profit organization and discontinued its association with Theater for the New City.

Today, the Village Halloween Parade is the largest celebration of its kind in the world and has been picked by Festivals International as “The Best Event in the World” for October 31.

The 2011 Village Halloween Parade theme was – The i of the Beholder. Inspired by Odilon Redon’s iconic Eye Balloon,  encourages us to stare back at the all-seeing, disembodied eye in the sky.

The brilliant artists and puppeteers Superior Concept Monsters  lead a cloud of floating eyes up Sixth Avenue. Parade watchers  became the watched — and everyone was invited to join.

The Parade draws more than 50,000 costumed participants and approximately 2 million spectators each year.

“When I first learned that up to 40 percent of all homeless youth in this country identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender I was shocked and saddened,” says Cyndi Lauper, co-founder of the True Colors Fund and Give a Damn Campaign. “For far too long homeless youth have not received the attention, resources and funding necessary to bring an end to this epidemic. My hope is that through this inspiring evening of music and comedy we can raise awareness and much needed funds to help these young people.”

Cyndi was inspired to help after meeting an extraordinary group of young homeless gay and transgender people several years ago. Already a longtime advocate for the LGBT community and equality, she co-founded the True Colors Fund in 2008 as a major step in this effort. Then, created the Give a Damn Campaign to raise awareness, especially among straight people, about the many issues, particularly youth homelessness, impacting the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

100% of the net proceeds from “Home for the Holidays” will benefit the True Colors Fund so that Cyndi, the True Colors Fund and the Give a Damn Campaign can continue to further its work to help homeless LGBT youth.
