Gay New York City! Celebrate The Japanese Penis Festival Tonight at Matsuri

Tagata Jinja is a Shinto shrine in Komaki just north of Nagoya, and as such is just one of many that can be found throughout Japan. The Hounen festival at Tagata shrine is one of the most famous (or infamous?) festivals in Japan.

Amongst foreigners visiting Aichi Prefecture it is frequently referred to as the “penis shrine”, or “Japanese penis festival”, primarily due to the ancient Hounen Matsuri (a festival celebrating fertility and renewal), which is held here every March 15th.

Every year a huge two and a half meter wooden phallus is carried the short distance between two shrines attracting visitors from all over Japan and international media attention. The festival is fun with a lot of sake drinking, however the background of the festival is rather more serious.

Christians have Easter. Jews have Passover. And now we gays can celebrate the Penis with the Japanese!  Tonight in Chelsea we can join in the penis celebration: Matsuri restaurant  is offering a one-night only Penis Festival menu!

There will not be actual penis on the menu! I know, some cultures eat animal penis and testicles. This special menu tonight is  created by Matsuri Chef Tadashi Ono and includes such specials as the “Big Sausage” (sausage, sea scallops, spicy rod roe, $18) and the “Get It Up Hot Pot” (traditional Japanese hot pot of oyster and sea urchin in dashi broth, $23), among a few other penis-shaped food items.

Penis Matsuri Menu available tonight only  – Not an April Fools  joke.
Matsuri at the Maritime Hotel   369 W. 16th Street, Chelsea     212-243-6400  Penis celebration begins at 5:30pm.

PFLAG to Give Liza Minnelli an Award

Citing her outstanding contributions as an artist to advancing equality for all, PFLAG National announced that Academy Award®-winning actress and iconic straight ally Liza Minnelli will be honored with the 2010 Straight for Equality in Entertainment award for her lifelong support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people.

The award will be presented at PFLAGs second annual Straight for Equality Awards Gala on May 1 at the New York Marriott Marquis.

Liza Minnelli is the quintessential straight ally. She has been an outspoken supporter of equality for LGBT people for her whole life, and her tremendous and ongoing philanthropy in the fight against AIDS has made her a very public advocate of the many individuals and their families who have been affected by the disease, said Jody M. Huckaby, PFLAG Nationals executive director.

Her enormous talent makes her iconic, and her steadfast support for the LGBT community makes her an ally. We are so honored to be able to present her with the 2010 Straight for Equality in Entertainment Award.

New York Photographer Ryan Colford Brings His Candy Shoppe to VLADA March 27th

Native New York artist & photographer Ryan Colford is having a solo exhibition  this coming Saturday, March 27th  @  VLADA!

Along with his “Candy Shoppe,” a vibrant and playful mix of sweet, sexy and sensual male imagery, Colford will be showcasing some new, DARING, and provocative images…with something for everyone. Who knew being sweet could be so exciting! 😉

If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by for a great night of fun, drinks and art at New York’s best vodka bar and best new gay bar! This is an open event.

Anyone can join and you are encouraged to invite others!

Ryan Colford has worked with a variety of models from some of the most well known agencies in New York – Major Models, New York Models, Red Models, DNA Models, Silver Models and Empire Models to name a few.

I’ve been asked – “But WHY do you do it”?

“I do it because I can’t imagine not doing it! Every day I wake up and my focus is riveted to this medium. I honestly feel compelled to create these images. I see and conceptualize my work based on an inherent beauty that I find in a person, scene or object. Essentially, the images that I create speak to my soul. Sometimes in a soft whisper and sometimes with a piercing scream!

My biggest fear is that there won’t be enough time for me to produce all the striking ideas that constantly whirl around in my head!”

“All photography simply involves evoking an emotional response. Whether that response is desire for a product or appreciation of beauty comes from the ability to tell a story with one simple image.”
 ~Ryan Colford

FLOW AFFAIR Flagging + Voguing = Floguing at THE CENTER April 23rd

To celebrate
the near-completion of Flow Affair, the new documentary to be released by Art From The Heart Films, the award-winning director Wolfgang Busch is hosting a Website Launch Party and fundraiser at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 23, 2010 at the LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th Street, New York, NY.

The suggested donation is $20.

Melba Moore, the ground-breaking Tony Award-winning actress and singer who has collaborated musically with Michael Jackson and has stared on Broadway opposite Eartha Kitt, will join Meli’sa Morgan, the top Billboard magazine recording artist, to headline the fundraiser featuring musical and dancing performances to benefit the completion of Flow Affair.

The fundraiser will present special performances of the new dance, “Floguing.”

Flow Affair explores the evolution of dance by showcasing the emergence of “Floguing” – a breakthrough in dance that has only begun to show up at underground circuit parties and dance clubs, and in innovative dance choreography.

“I am grateful that the community is supporting Flow Affair,” said Busch.  “We are revolutionizing dance, and I hope this fundraiser will help us bring Floguing to the whole world.”

Floguing – it’s like voguing, but with flags or fans in your hands
In 2006, Busch, the director and producer of Flow Affair, brought together members from the House Ball community, the originators of the dance “Voguing,” and members from the Flagging community, the originators of the dance “Flagging” and “Fanning,” to create a new dance :  FLAGGING  +  VOGUING  =  FLOGUING.

At the House Ball’s voguing competitions, there is a dance category called voguing with a prop, where dancers sometimes use fabric and fans.  Introducing flags was the next step in the category’s artistic progression.  Soon, dancers were “walking the runway” with flags, and, in the process, the new dance “Floguing” was created.

About Wolfgang Busch :
A community-organizer and activist, Busch is an openly gay documentary filmmaker.  His first feature documentary release, How Do I Look (2006), was about the success of the Harlem House Ball community in creating cutting-edge trends in fashion, dance, and runway.  He uses the arts to empower communities in several states.

Are you flowing ?

To see where Flow Affair will go next, we invite you to visit :

Adam Bouska in New York City for NOH8 Campaign Shoots Blogger Zee Bdr

Photographer ADAM BOUSKA

became a LGBT activist quite by accident. He calls it “accidental activism“. Gosh, he has come a long way in the 6 years we have known him!

We met Adam in 2003.  He was living in the suburbs of Chicago and had just graduated college where he studied Computer Science. Being a photographer myself, I was always on the lookout for fresh new young talent. I met Adam and asked him to pose for me. During the shoot, he confided that Computer Science was not really his passion. And though he was dabbling with modeling, it was the art of photography that really intrigued him.

Shortly afterwords, Adam moved to Southern Californina. We stayed in touch now and then through  MySpace and watched as his young budding career began to blossom.

It didn’t take long and his name was sprouting up everywhere!

In November 2008, Proposition 8 in California happened. California wanted to put a stop to the idea of gay marriage. The defeat of Prop 8 provoked a groundswell of activism within the LGBTQ community and many new political and protest organizations were formed in response to the defeat. It was like Stonewall was happening again!

Adam, his partner Jeff Parshley  and some friends attended the Prop 8 rallies in Los Angeles. Afterwords, they got so emotionally stirred they knew they wanted to do something,  to make some kind of statement. He and a dozen friends went to the store and bought some paints and duct tape, went back to his apartment and shot photos. Using photography as his voice, Adam placed tape over their mouths and painted the now famous NOH8 on their cheeks, and the next day posted their images to MySpace and Facebook, to demonstrate their silent protest. Anyone familiar with Prop 8, have seen his work!

Before he knew it, a dozen more friends wanted to do the same thing . Adam shot more photos and those friends also posted them online. The next month 30 of their friends wanted the same photos! It started to grow exponentially. In the 6 months that followed it exploded and nearly 500 people had been photographed and pictures were flooding the Internet.

Soon celebrities want to join in and show their support. To date, 3,000+ faces have been shot by Adam and his team for the NOH8 Campaign. The campaign began with portraits of everyday Californians from all walks of life and soon rose to include politicians, military personnel, newlyweds, law enforcement, artists, celebrities, and many more.

Cindy McCain, wife of former Presidential candidate Senator John McCain, was even photographed by Adam, speaking out on behalf of gay marriage rights as part of a popular ongoing photo campaign. “Cindy McCain wanted to participate in the campaign to show people that party doesn’t matter – marriage equality isn’t a Republican issue any more than it is a Democratic issue. It’s about human rights, and everybody being treated equally in the eyes of the law that runs and protects this country.”

The NOH8 Campaign has received overwhelming support from around the world, appearing on various local and national news programs and publications. The images are currently being used on various social networking sites to spread the message of equality, predominantly Facebook and Twitter. Eventually the images are expected to be compiled for a large-scale media campaign. The group just shot their 3rd PSA. There has been talks of  billboards, possible calendar, coffee table books and even a documentary.

Just last month the team shot 500 people in 5 hours in New York City. Among them, were one of our favorite New York City gay bloggers ZEE BDR from Z Reveals!

Z knows only too well what fear, hate and silence can breed. Coming from Turkey, he shared his moving story with the guys from I’M FROM DRIFTWOOD.

He was very excited to be photographed by Adam!

Finally!!! I joined to NOH8 campaign. It was time. I’m so proud of being part of this campaign. Photo shoot was very fast. Adam Bouska is a great photographer. He made me feel relaxed. Adam loved my blue flower as soon as he saw. Hello Adam! Join to THE blue flower fan club! I’m so happy to see he was creative with  and turned blue flower into red.

Well! Meghan McCain got her picture!
Of course prominent blogger Z had to have his! –Tee Hee Hee!”

I am still waiting to be a part of your blue flower project, Zee!
Maybe this year sometime!

Adam hopes to tour  more major cities soon, doing more open shoots and spreading the message across the country. “This is much bigger than just  about Prop 8.  And when we win this, when Prop 8 is overturned, and it will be,  we’re not stopping.  It’s about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell….it’s about gay civil rights….it’s about equal rights…it’s about making our silence heard….it’s about the big picture now! And we have only just begun!”  Groups as far away as Germany and  Australia have even started similar campaigns.

Remember when Gay Pride and National Coming Out  day was just once a year? Thanks to the power of Social Media and the interconnectedness of the Internet these days, we can make a statement about who we are and show the world our messages. “Activism needs to be a part of your DAILY LIFE and your lifestyle. Not just once a year.”

THE NOH8 store online  has t-shirts, bumper stickers, tattoos and my favorite, THE BRACELET!

Funds raised by the NOH8 Campaign will be used to continue promoting and raising awareness for Marriage Equality and anti-discrimination on a global level through an educational and interactive media campaign.

YOTEL Compact Rooms Come to Times Square in New York City

Last year when flying to Prague, we had a  7 hour stop at  London’s  Heathrow airport. So rather than drive into London to get a room and pay for a full night, we stayed at YOTEL and were able to book  a room  for 6 hours. Yotel is known for their “pod” rooms in Europe. Everything you would expect from a luxury hotel in a small space. GREAT DESIGN but inside the airport terminal building!

Now the Pod hotel chain Yotel  opening  in New York City next year. It will be  its first expansion outside of airport locations. And the hourly/pod concept of course will not be needed, but the company will focus on compact space with great design features and functionality.

Yotel Times Square, to be located at 42nd Street and 10th Avenue, will feature 669 cabin rooms (about 185 square feet), making it the largest hotel opening planned for New York in 2011.

The firm says that it will feature a restaurant, bar, meeting rooms, Club Lounge and the largest outdoor terrace space of any hotel in New York.

YOTEL will bring a unique mix of fun, excitement and luxury to New York and all at an affordable price,” said Simon Woodroffe, founder of the YO! Sushi chain and Yotels.
(photo below from Yotel pod rooms in Europe)

With the opening one year away and the ever changing hotel rates in Manhattan, it’s hard to say what their rates will be. However the company  told me “we will make sure that we are great value for money and extremely competitive. Customers constantly tell us that they don’t want to pay for lots of space in rooms that they actually never use. It’s about the quality of sleep, flexibility and quality.

The rooms will  be compact  but really nicely designed and with hand made organic beds, large flat screen TV, free WiFi and wired internet, the best ever rain shower, plenty of storage space. In addition the facilities of the hotel will be fantastic – the largest outside terrace space in New York, a really funky bar, lovely concept restaurant.”

West End Intergenerational Residence HDFC, Inc. has closed financing and commenced construction on an exciting new housing development effort: True Colors Residence, located in Central Harlem.

True Colors Residence will be New York City’s first permanent housing facility with support services for 18-24 year old lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth with a history of homelessness. The undertaking was conceived by West End Executive Director Colleen Jackson, and by musical artist Cyndi Lauper and Ms. Lauper’s manager Lisa Barbaris. The project entails the construction of a new, energy-efficient multifamily building containing 30 studio apartments, indoor and outdoor community space for residents, and a computer room and resource library. The building is named in honor of  Lauper’s support for the project and for West End, and references Cyndi Lauper’s hit song, “True Colors.”

“Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth living on the streets and in foster care need our support more than ever,” said Cyndi Lauper.

“In New York City, the True Colors Residence is going to play a big role in providing these young people with the leg up and encouragement they need. I am thrilled that construction has already begun and I am honored to be a part of this important project.”
