Nick Adams Aids Walk New York Fundraising Efforts

We just saw PRISCILLA on Broadway  this week!  WOW!  What an eye-popping, show-stopping performance!  Everyone does a fantastic job, but of course, our heart has always belonged to Nick Adams, since I first saw him onstage in 2005.

We’ll be covering it more in a couple weeks, and catching up with the ever adorable, super-talented Nick Adams with an interview right here at BestGayNewYork.com, in the coming weeks!

But for now, you should know,  will be singing at the kick off of the 2011 AIDS Walk NY on May 15th!

And Nick is walking and raising money again this year.  Nick is part of the BROADWAY IMPACT group which is a community of actors, directors, stage managers, fans, producers — pretty much anyone who has ever seen, been in or worked on a Broadway show — united by the simple belief that anyone who wants to should be able to get married.
“We’re  very proud to be apart of the 2011 NY Aids Walk!”

Nick gives, and gives and gives whenever he can to great causes like Broadway Bares and AIDS WALK NY.  (He has even been crowned Broadway Hero by GayLifeNYC.org.)  “I enjoy giving my time to great causes, and it makes me feel good to know I can help in some way.”

Nick sent us this note, to share with our readers….

Hey Friends! I just wanted to take a minute to ask for your help in raising money for AIDS WALK NYC. The cast of Priscialla is raising money for this worthy cause, and I thought it would be great if my fans rallied together and gave the most.

If we can reach my personal goal of raising $3,000 I will pick one lucky subscriber to recieve an autographed program from the show. If we hit $6,000 I will send out 5 autographed programs, and if we break $15,000 I will send someone special a program autographed by everyone in the entire cast!

Additionally, anyone donating $500 or more, I will send them an autographed program (simply email us a proof of donation along with your shipping address).

UPDATE  !!!  Monday May 2nd –

Thanks for everyone who donated after my last e-mail for AIDS Walk NYC! I was able to break my original goal of $3,000 and am now the #1 fundraiser from the cast! Thanks!

I wanted to up the stakes and see if we could get some more folks giving. If you’ve ever dreamt about getting a backstage tour of Priscilla from me, this is your chance. For every person that gives $500 or more, I will arrange to give you a personal backstage tour. Simply get tickets to the show of your choice and I’ll meet you after the show and give you a private tour. Some people have been paying $5,000 – $10,000 to get backstage tours, so to be able to get one in exchange for a tax deductible dontation of only $500, is AMAZING.

William Blake LIVE FROM NEW YORK Returns to Birdland May 2

Can I just say, I have never been a big fan of Karaoke! Although, in New York it can be really good sometimes.

I was in a tiny neighborhood bar the other night having my last call, and some theatre folks were doing Karaoke, practicing their voices and styles. Nothing exciting.  In walks William Blake. You may recall, William  first appeared on the fourth season of the American Idol as a contestant on the Hollywood stage. He then released his first studio recorded album which entitled “Day Dreamer” in 2005.

So here I am sipping the last of my drink, and THAT VOICE!  I almost dropped my drink as I got a front row seat to that magical voice and William belted out several numbers!

Last year, the Carneggie Hall witnessed his debut, singing as a guest vocalist in Standard Time With Michael Feinstein. The Dallas born singer was  also featured in the Jim Caruso’s Cast Party in the Town Hall, alongside him are Liza Minelli, Chita Rivera, and many other stars. He also has acting repertoire in his resume.  Talk about an upcoming powerhouse!

To celebrate the release of Cavern Records “William Blake: Live from New York,” Jim Caruso is pleased to announce that singer William Blake will return to the Birdland stage, New York, on May 2nd at 7 P.M, where the album itself was recorded on September, last year. Michael Thomas Murray will once again, join with him in this first part of Broadway Birdland concerts.

GO SEE THIS SHOW!

Gay Life NYC.org Talks with Jonathan D. Lovitz

This week Michael Cavnaugh
from
Gay Life NYC.org
turns his camera on JONATHAN D. LOVITZ –
Broadway Hero of the  month.

Actor, singer and model Jonathan D. Lovitz  stands out in a crowd.  Jonathan has an extensive stage resume and is as down home as apple pie!

Jonathan is one of those actors who exudes positive energy that effects those around him. His smile, is without a doubt contagious.

You may have read his name earlier this month

gay man was excused from jury duty in New York last week because he said that discrimination against gays makes him a second-class citizen and therefore he couldn’t be impartial.

Jonathan wrote on his Facebook page, “I raised my hand and said, ‘Since I can’t get married or adopt a child in the state of New York, I can’t possibly be an impartial judge of a citizen when I am considered a second class citizen in the eyes of the justice system.’”

“And he got off the case!” reported Village Voice columnist Michael Musto. “And that’s how the new phenomenon of ‘jury duty blocking’ was born.”

Jonathan is also a part of Setup Squad premiering this month on Logo.

the scoop –  No-nonsense Renee Lee has the business solution for people who stink at dating: she hooks them up with professional “wing” women and men from her agency.

From the producers of “Pawn Stars,” “Setup Squad” is a docu-reality series where relationship misfits get saved from themselves by experts who coach them in ‘the art of the pickup.’ The “wing” women and men are snappy and sexy: two straight women, a lesbian, and a gay man (hunky Broadway star, Jonathan D. Lovitz) – all fierce and fun and full of opinions about their ineffectual clients.

They give clients a crash dating makeover, transforming them from ‘shabby & shy’ to ‘chic & confident’. Then they provide a real shot at love, breaking the ice for them in social settings. Then the real dramas unfold. Will they land the deal? Or get snubbed by their intended target? And what happens when one of the experts gets a little too cozy with their client? Find out in this highly charged reality series combining the most sizzling parts of dating shows with the most electric elements of workplace dramas.’

Jonathan says, “What started off as being the youngest kid in the family dying for attention had turned into an incredibly exciting life in theatre, film, and tv.

After years wanting to be an engineer, astronaut, and diplomat I landed on the next logical career choice: actor and entertainer!

I’ve been so blessed (and so jetlagged) to have traveled to all 50 states as well as amazing destinations in North America and Europe performing in things as varied as big Broadway musicals to insane 24-hour commercial shoots. I feel like the luckiest man on Earth, and I hope it’s just the beginning!”

Jonathan has  worked consistently as a stage actor and dedicated countless hours to organizations such as Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. His participation included the annual Broadway Flea Market and Broadway Bares. He was a special performer at the Broadway Bares: Classic event held to honor the best of the first 20 years of Broadway Bares, recreating Pan from 2007’s “Myth Behavior” and later danced with Vanessa Williams in the opening of Broadway Bares XX: Strip-Opoly. He also appears regularly at events throughout New York City for organizations including the Ali Forney Center and UCP of NYC.

PBS to show Stonewall Uprising April 25th

HOW CAN YOU BE GAY AND LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY AND NOT KNOW WHAT THE STONEWALL RIOTS WERE?  HELLO?  REALLY?!

I talked with two people recently under the age of 25, who had no clue!

When police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in the Greenwich Village section of New York City on June 28, 1969, the street erupted into violent protests that lasted for the next six days. The Stonewall riots, as they came to be known, marked a major turning point in the modern gay civil rights movement in the United States and around the world.

DID YOU KNOW?   In the late 1960s, the American Psychiatric Association still classified homosexuality as a mental disorder, and gay men and lesbian women received almost universal moral condemnation from mainstream religions. The act of homosexual sex, even in private homes, was punishable by a light fine, 20 years in prison, or even a life sentence!!

New York City had the largest gay population in the United States. It was also the city that most aggressively upheld anti-sodomy laws. In the mid-1960s New York created police vice squads to raid gay bars and baths, and began using decoys to solicit and entrap gays. By 1966 over 100 men a week were arrested as a result of this effort. “It was a nightmare for the lesbian or gay man who was arrested and caught up in the juggernaut but it was also a nightmare for the lesbians or gay men who lived in the closet,” Yale Law School professor William Eskridge says in the film. “This produced an enormous amount of anger within the lesbian and gay community in New York City. Eventually something was bound to blow.”

STONEWALL UPRISING is a very important film we should all see!  PBS and AMERICAN EXPERIENCE is airing it on Monday, April 25th!  Check your local listings!  GET A SNEAK  PEAK  ONLINE.

Coming soon to DVD!

Bruce Vilanch at Queens Theatre May 7th

Bruce Vilanch is a comedy writer, songwriter and actor, who is “One of the most sought-after jokesmiths in the entertainment industry”.

The six-time Emmy Award-winner is known to those ‘in the know’ in Hollywood and New York as “the fat guy who writes everyone’s jokes.”

He is best known as a writer for TV awards shows; he’s co-written 21 Oscar broadcasts, as well as a featured writer for the Tonys, Grammys and Emmys and his 4-year stint on Hollywood Squares, as both a performer and writer.

This years Oscars with James Franco – was a little…strange….

New York magazine caught up with Bruce Vilanch recently and asked him what happened.

“I have to call James Franco and tell him the show’s over,” Vilanch quipped. “He doesn’t know. He took a nap and he woke up in class.”

Was Vilanch saying Franco’s sleepy performance was due to an actual lack of sleep?

“He has so many balls in the air, he didn’t get to town till Thursday before the show on Sunday. And so we e-mailed a lot. But we had a lot of meetings. He had a bunch of people who were writing for him, and if it had been him alone, it would have been different. But it was him and Anne Hathaway, and they both had to be serviced. So there was a lot of communication beforehand. But he didn’t get there.”

Vilanch continued: “I don’t think he realized how big a deal it is to do it until he was actually confronted with it. I think he thought he would kind of … I don’t know what he thought. I thought maybe it was a performance-art prank, and then I realized he sincerely wanted to do it. But it’s outside of those guys’ comfort zones. The only people who know how to host those shows are people who get up onstage every night and say, ‘Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. A funny thing happened … ‘ Or people like Bette [Midler] who get up and sing all night and tell stories.”

Was Franco maybe stoned, as was rumored? “No, he wasn’t high,” Vilanch said. “I was with him, and he wasn’t high. And I asked him, ‘Are you high, and can I have some?’ And he said no to both.”

BRUCE is  performing on May 7th at Queens Theatre in the Park.

Tickets are $37, Senior $35, Student $22 and are now available online at Queens Theatre or by calling 718-760-0064. Tickets may also be purchased in-person at the Box Office,  1 hour prior to performances, if available.

Jesse Archer Has Fire Island Web Series in the Works

Fire Island has long been established as New York’s “Gay Summer Wonderland” and in recent years has had an influx of international visitors keen to spend time in this truly unique resort, almost exclusively populated by gay men during the summer months.

What better place for a gay comedy series?!

A new comedy series from the creators of

A Four Letter Word & Violet Tendencies

Jesse Archer and Sean Hanley.

Fire Island Pines is where the sun meets the sand—free of hesitation, oppression, or explanation!  It’s the fantasy every gay man dreamed of as a child—The Island of Misfit Boys!

Check your inhibitions on the mainland and hop aboard the fairy ferry to a land where carefree men frolic in the skimpiest fashions as if the stuffy outside world didn’t exist.  Stroll exclusive boardwalks where the flip-flops are fierce and the only thing stronger than the golden Adonis-like men are the cocktails at Low Tea!

Take a peek into the lives of one summer house in Half-Share.  Sometimes debaucherous, usually randy, and always outrageous…  When you share a house on Fire Island with six gay men, anything can happen.  And often does!

We live in the Web 3.0 world, where anything is possible.

Video may have killed the radio star, but the internet is definitely reviving the careers of the TV star!  When Lisa Kudrow (Friends) was unable to get the roles she wanted, she decided to co-produce the original Internet comedy Web Therapy.  After three successful online seasons, Showtime was so impressed they bought it for their lineup.  Similarly, the TV hospital spoof Childrens Hospital (Rob Corddry—Hot Tub Time Machine), was launched as a web-series and just made its network premiere after being snapped up by the Cartoon Network.

Today, content creators are easily able to distribute through many avenues: DVD (compilations in this case), Video On Demand, iTunes, YouTube, Netflix, and future revenue generating outlets of online streaming.  Apple has iTunes and Apple TV, Microsoft has built Windows Media Center into virtually every copy of Windows 7, Google TV is on the horizon, and all of Google’s increasingly popular Android phones come with the YouTube app pre-installed.

HALF SHARE is utilizing all of these tactics, in addition to taking advantage of new media technology (when it is released) to ensure that Half-Share becomes the kind of success detailed in the examples above.

More details  soon! Check out Jesse’s  blog for more info~!

MEANWHILE  grab  Violet Tendencies
on DVD coming in May!

Written by Jesse Archer and Directed by Casper Andreas.

At 40, Violet is the racy, fun-loving belle of the ball. She spends her nights as royalty, but when the party ends, she always heads home alone. While her co-worker Riley struggles with his boyfriend Markus going baby-crazy, and her roommate Luke tackles monogo-mania, Violet’s romantic life is one big bellyflop.

Chasing love and lust at all costs, she may find them in the most unlikely of places.land a straight boyfriend.

A film festival favorite and rated 4 out 5 by many! This is a must-see if you haven’t already.

My Parents Were Awesome by Eliot Glazer April 5th

NEWSFLASH:
Your mom and dad weren’t always parents
.

They used to be people—and they were awesome. Eliot Glazer visits The powerHouse Arena (Brooklyn) with his new book based on his popular blog
 MY PARENTS WERE  AWESOME
to convince you that your parents were once Awesome, too.
TUESDAY, APRIL 5th, 2011.

He’ll be joined by Rachel Shukert, Rachel Sklar, and Dave Itzkoff with stand-up from Giulia Rozzi.

About “My Parents Were Awesome”:

They bathed you. They fed you. They raised you to become the person you are today. Your parents are an integral part of your story. But guess what? They have a story too—one that started long before you entered the picture. Before embarrassing fanny packs and Lite FM, there was a time when Mom and Dad were young and carefree—just like you. They were also fun and flirty, full of hope and desire and effortlessly cool.

Based on the wildly popular website, My Parents Were Awesome shares heartwarming and hilarious essays by sons and daughters—including Jamie Deen, Christian Lander, Dave Itzkoff, Katherine Center, Laurie Notaro, and Holly Peterson—who tell tales of their folks before babies, mortgages, and receding hairlines: the mom and dad who traveled by VW bus to see Led Zeppelin for $1, the grandmother whose halter top and shorts belied her perfect demeanor, the father whose wanderlust passed down to his equally nomadic daughter. Accompanied by treasured vintage photographs, these stories will make you laugh, melt your heart, and spark your own reflections of Mom and Dad.

 Tuesday, April 5 · 7:00pm – 9:00pm   @   The Powerhouse Arena
37 Main Street    in D.U.M.B.O.   Brooklyn, NY
There will be a Q&A, as well as readings from Dave Itzkoff, Rachel Shukert, and Rachel Sklar, and stand-up comedy courtesy of contributor Giulia Rozzi.

New Yorkers enraged over Gay Bashings and Marching Against Hate Crime

Multiple gay bashings this month in New York City have shaken not only the LGBT community but New Yorkers in general.

Action group Right to feel Safe is organizing a march on April 10th leading to the crime scene of the most recent gay bashing and ending at the historical Stonewall inn.

Late Sunday night 26 year old Damian Furtch was brutally gay bashed after leaving a MC Donalds in the West Village in New York City.

In a statement Furtch shared with GLAAD yesterday, he says:
The attack against me is part of the larger issue of violence against gay and transgender people in New York City.

While I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story, I hope to shed light on the larger issue of violence against my community. This has to stop. Under no circumstance should a person be attacked for their sexual orientation.”

Damian´s attack is the second gay bashing this month in New York City. Late February 26 year old Barie Shortell was gay bashed a block away from his home in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Action group Right to feel Safe is fed up and has taken the initiative to organize a march against hate crime. Right to feel safe consists of a group of friends of Damian Furtch who each have dealt with anti gay violence in the past.

Right to feel Safe broad support all around the world. Queen of electroclash; Peaches participates by creating an inspiring video to supports efforts of “Right to feel safe”.

The march will take place on April 10th starting at 3.30 pm at Washington Square park and will lead to the location where Damian was beaten after which it will end at the Stonewall inn; location of the historical Stonewall riots.

Right to feel Safe: “It is extremely important to us that we end our March at the Stonewall inn because it shows that we will never forget our history and that we will keep fighting for the rights that generations before us fought for with blood, sweat and tears.

“We are dealing with a global trend here that needs to be stopped now!” “It seems that gay bashing is prevalent even in some of the most liberal cities in the world and that is something that just simply cannot be tolerated!”

After a 24 percent increase in gay violence in 2010, Right to feel safe organized two Marches against gay bashing in former gay capitol Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Right to feel Safe feels LGBT communities have come to a boiling point:“For over forty years we have been actively and openly fighting for our rights.” “It is time we get what we have been fighting so hard for: full equality and for all!”
