Gay Skiing in Upstate New York Affected by Lack of Snowfall
A new analysis conducted for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Protect Our Winters (POW) will detail the devastating economic impact that climate change could have on the winter tourism industry in New York and the rest of the nation.
The analysis finds that the $12.2 billion ski and snowmobile industry is dependent on heavy and predictable snowfall, and changes in the winter season snowfall have already been felt across the nation and are likely to become even more pronounced with climate change.
The study aims to help policy makers understand both the ski and snowmobile industry’s current economic scale and the potential economic impacts that climate change may cause, as well as the effects the industry is already feeling in New York and the rest of the nation from reduced snowpack and rising winter temperatures over the last decade.
Just this past ski season, 50 percent of ski resorts opened late and 48 percent closed early with every region experiencing a decrease in the days of operation. Winter sports resorts are not the only ones affected by this shift; a reduced and shortened winter season will also hurt the secondary related industries of lodging, restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores and entertainment.

Will Hillary run for Mayor of NY? Or President of US?
Many have wondered whether retiring U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton might consider another stab at the presidency in 2016, but a published report Monday said Mayor Michael Bloomberg was hoping she might run for another office even sooner.
Citing “a phone call confirmed by three people,” the New York Times reported
Bloomberg encouraged Clinton to enter the 2013 mayoral race. The
article revealed few other details about the call, calling it “shrouded
in mystery.”
People briefed on the call told the New York Times that Clinton
responded in no uncertain terms that she is not interested in the
mayor’s office, and will not be running.
The secretary of State has said she will step down as the nation’s top diplomat in January. In an interview in October, she said that she hoped to find time to herself after leaving the Washington spotlight.
New York Cities Best Holiday Windows Display
were inspired by entertainments such as the Ziegfeld Follies, Vaudeville
revues and Busby Berkeley’s Hollywood musicals of the 1930s. They’re a
miniature revival of classic Art Deco style, touching upon the fantasy
shows of the time — the solo act, the duo, group performance, novelty

The BG Follies continue beyond Fifth Avenue, featuring a panoply of

Lord & Taylor has been celebrating the holiday season by decorating their windows for passersby since 1938. Lord & Taylor’s has the most old-fashioned of the holiday windows unveiled this week—appropriate, since they’re commemorating 75 years of December displays. While Bloomingdale’s and Barneys went with non-denominational pop culture themes, Lord & Taylor’s windows are all about Christmas traditions
around the world. They follow Santa Claus as he visits Central Park, a
swanky party (do note the miniature Champagne bottles), and a
lantern-festooned bridge in Asia.
On Madison Avenue, Barneys New York’s holiday windows are a must-see. Every year they are hip and stylish, with a nice dose of humor. Some may call Disney World the Happiest Place On Earth.
But around these parts, Barneys New York is just about our happiest
place ever. So why not call it even and join the two together?
Thanks to a few marketing geniuses, Disney and Barneys have come
together and finally unveiled their “Electric Holiday” campaign,
complete with cartoon ads and gorgeous window displays.

Bloomingdale’s holiday windows 2012: Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away
Holiday? Well, they are fanciful. Bloomingdale’s is getting acrobatic this holiday season, with window
displays that depict scenes from Cirque du Soleil’s new cinematic
offering, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away.
Macy’s
displays are inspired by the story of the little girl behind the famous
newspaper column “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Clause”.
This year’s Holiday Windows at Saks,
were inspired by the delicate, intricate and fascinating art of the

Exciting news for “Good Morning America” personality Sam Champion —

New Yorks Fire Island Pines Recovering
Fire Island Pines Recovering from Hurricane Sandy
FIRE ISLAND PINES, New York (November 06, 2012) – FIP Ventures, which
owns and operates 80% of the commercial properties at Fire Island
Pines, is pleased to report that The Pines weathered Hurricane Sandy
well, and that The Pines has already made good progress recovering in
the wake of the storm.
While parts of Fire Island suffered devastating damage, the Fire Island
Pines Property Owners’ Association (FIPPOA) reports that The Pines
experienced the least damage of any Fire Island community. FIPPOA
reports that no one was hurt, no homes were destroyed, and that any
damage is repairable this winter. Additionally, FIP Ventures notes that
the properties it operates are located on the harbor side of The Pines,
which experienced less of Sandy’s force than the beachfront houses on
the ocean side of the island.
FIP Ventures operates the Blue Whale restaurant, Hotel Ciel, and
Canteen cafe. It is also rebuilding the Pavilion dance club, which was
lost by fire less than a year ago. The Blue Whale and Hotel Ciel
suffered some wind damage, and there was flooding at FIP Ventures’ staff
house, but all indications are that any needed repairs will be able to
be made in the near future.
Construction on the new Pavilion should resume as well, after initial
clean-up and when local authorities allow contractors access to the
island again. FIP Ventures secured construction permits for the building
earlier this year, and the Pavilion’s foundation and septic system were
completed before the storm arrived.
As seen on the special website set up by FIPPOA, the community has
already organized itself to keep Pines residents informed and streamline
communications related to recovery. More information can be found at
their website: http://sites.google.com/site/
The Pines’ water and cell phone service have been restored, LIPA is
working to bring back electricity, and ferry service may return as soon
as this weekend. Local agencies are enacting measures to expedite
permitting for repairs. In short, Fire Island Pines withstood the storm
relatively intact, repairs will continue this winter, and The Pines will
be strong and vibrant once again this Spring.
Matthew Blesso, CEO and Founder of Blesso Properties and Operating
Partner of FIP Ventures, notes: “Hurricane Sandy’s severity was
unprecedented, at least in recent history, and with it came
unprecedented damage across the island and throughout The Pines. We will
continue to assess damage to our properties, but expect to address any
necessary repairs in the coming weeks and to resume construction of the
new Pavilion very soon and be open for this summer.”
On the community spirit at The Pines, Blesso adds: “Fire Island Pines
unites and stands strong in times of crisis. Time and again, we have
witnessed this community’s extraordinary resilience. We have no doubt
that The Pines will bounce back from this setback, clean up, rebuild,
and be ready to welcome back its residents and visitors in no time at
all.”

Ali Forney Center Fundraiser Sunday Nov 11 for New Yorks LGBTQ Youth
Tickets are available for purchase at the door for $20, and 100 percent of the event proceeds from ticket sales, bar service and raffle items will go to the AFC.
“Sandy upended the lives of many New Yorkers, but not nearly as much as the youth of the Ali Forney Center, who now have nowhere to turn for basic services such as shelter and food.
The evening will include entertainment provided by DJ Vito Fun, and cabaret shows from Marti Gould Cummings, Joseph Keckler and Brett Gleason. Raffle items for the event will be announced that evening.
Carl Siciliano, Executive Director of AFC, said: “I am enormously grateful for the immense outpouring of support we have seen for the AFC over the past several days – not just here in New York, but from all over the country. Our youth, who in many cases have been cruelly rejected by their own families for being LGBTQ, need our help now more than ever, and we hope that this event will allow the day when we can restore these vital services to come sooner rather than later.”
While the AFC plans to open the first-ever 24-hour drop-in center for homeless LGBTQ youth in an alternate location, it will not be open for several months. In the meantime, New York’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center has generously offered AFC some of their space to provide temporary Drop-In Services.
New York City Subways will Close at 7pm TONIGHT
Long Island Rail Road trains will also make their final departures at 7
p.m., and will cross-honor tickets for each others’ passengers.

alone have resulted in a majority of the city council now in favor of
Intro 86A.
