Gay Weddings = $ Millions of Revenue

And states are realizing how much they are missing out on, without legalizing gay marriage!
Allowing gay marriage in New York would bring in nearly $391 million in wedding and tourism revenue, according to the State Senate’s Independent Democratic Conference (IDC).
The report estimates 21,309 gay and lesbian couples would get married in New York within the first three years. It also predicts 3,308 couples from neighboring states would come to New York to get married, and that 41,907 other out-of-state gay and lesbian couples would travel to New York.
“Gay and lesbian couples are not wealthy – it’s a stereotype,” Janis Ricker, a PhD student at Stanford University, told Politically Illustrated. “Regardless, we love liberal states and I imagine a ton of gays would travel to New York to celebrate and participate in the lively night life New York City offers.”
GOVERNOR CUOMO is all for it!
And he is pushing hard for it this year!
“We want to pass a bill,” he said. “We don’t want to bring up a bill in the Senate that would fail.”
Opponents to the measure argue Mr. Cuomo is doing little to help New York’s poor and needy people.
“Governor Cuomo, please help New York’s poor and needy people by saving rent control and rent stabilization laws instead of pushing gay marriage,” State Sen. Rubin Diaz Sr. told reporters.
Mr. Cuomo said he plans to meet with gay supporters in the legislature to determine whether there will be enough votes to pass the bill.
A bill providing gay and lesbian couples the same rights as heterosexual couples was defeated in the New York state senate in 2009.
But Senator Diaz….if Cuomo gets the gay marriage bill to pass, and the state can start collecting extra revenue, THEN there WILL BE more money to help the poor and needy! See how it works?!
As states like California and New York grapple over gay marriage, New England has found that it can be a small fillip to the economy.
Gay marriage is good for business. A popular Provincetown Florist has 20 to 30 weddings booked this summer, and the reason for that decent return is evident in the next customer who walks through the door – a lesbian couple from Kansas desperately in need of some carnations for their wedding.
Massachusetts estimates that gay marriage has added money to its coffers – but only about $37 million a year, or less than 1 percent of the annual state budget.
In the private sector, the wedding industry could grow by more than $16 billion if gay marriage were expanded to all 50 states, according to a 2004 study by Forbes magazine.

Get ready to read The Picture of Dorian Gray — the way Oscar Wilde intended to to be read. More than 120 years after the classic’s initial release, the original version is about to be published, according to The Telegraph.
Before its serialized publication in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine in 1890, Wilde’s editor made a number of changes to tone down the book’s homoerotic content. References to the protagonist’s lovers as “mistresses” and other “decadent” phrases were also removed.
One phrase from the original — “it is quite true I have worshipped you with far more romance of feeling than a man should ever give to a friend” — was changed to —”From the moment I met you, your personality had the most extraordinary influence on me.”

Hudson Taylor and Lea Delaria at Q TALK May 21

Hudson Taylor, All-American Wrestler and Columbia University Wrestling Coach
Hudson Taylor is a three-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler and Columbia University coach. He is the first three-time All-American in the University of Maryland’s wrestling history and holds several hall-of-fame records. Hudson’s career places him among the top-five pinners in NCAA history. He is currently training to compete internationally with an eye toward the Olympic Games.
Hudson, a heterosexual athlete and a committed LGBT advocate, is determined to eliminate homophobia in sports.
After wearing a gay rights sticker on his wrestling headgear during competitions, The Advocate named Hudson one of the “Top 150 Reasons to Have Gay Pride in 2010.” He has also been featured on ESPN as a leading LGBT ally and called “the most exciting wrestler in the world” by Sports Illustrated. In March 2011, PFLAG also awarded Hudson with the “Straight for Equality in Sports” Award at their 3rd Annual Gala in New York City.
In December 2010 Hudson founded Athlete Ally, a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging athletes, coaches, parents, fans and other members of the sports community to respect all individuals involved in sports, regardless of perceived or actual sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.
Through social networking campaigns, on-campus trainings and additional practical tools, Athlete Ally encourages athletes, coaches and others to eliminate all forms of homophobia in sports. As a guest lecturer and keynote speaker at schools and colleges across the country, Hudson emphasizes the athlete’s responsibility to lead in the fight for respect and inclusion in sports. Hudson has been featured live on MSNBC with Thomas Roberts to discuss Athlete Ally and the organization’s mission to challenge homophobia in sports.
In addition to his work with Athlete Ally, Hudson serves on the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) Sport’s Project Advisory Board, led by Dr. Pat Griffin, Professor Emeritus in the Social Justice Education Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. This initiative works with K-12 schools to create an athletic environment that encourages respect, safety and inclusion for all students and coaches.
Hudson is also authoring a book entitled, The Athlete Ally: Empowering a New Era of Leadership and Inclusion in Sports. A work in progress, The Athlete Ally will inspire and guide coaches, athletes, administrators, fans and parents to redefine sportsmanship and what it means to be an athlete and a leader.
Hudson draws inspiration for his advocacy from his great-great-great grandfather James Hudson Taylor, a 19th century British Protestant missionary to China who converted more than 18,000 people to Christianity. As a result of this lineage, LGBT-affirming Christian groups have turned to Hudson to discuss the intersection of respect and inclusion for LGBT individuals with Christian moral principles.

David Sigal’s docu is a paean to French expat and gay activist Florent Morellet and the restaurant he established in Gotham’s decidedly unglamorous Meatpacking District. A unique haven defined not by exclusivity but by its wholehearted embrace of diversity, Florent’s became a fabled hangout for locals, hookers, families, celebrities, performance artists, club boys and blue-haired old ladies. Exuberant pic will wow gay markets but could expand further, Morellet’s appeal being as broad-based as his clientele.
When Sigal started shooting in January 2008, little did he imagine he would be chronicling the last days of a 25-year-old Greenwich Village institution. Florent’s forced closure (caused by an astronomical rent increase) lends a nostalgic conclusiveness to the anecdotes offered by those who frequented the venue, drawn to the warm informality of Morellet and his enlightened wait staff throughout its quarter-century history. (Morellet’s ingenious five-week countdown to eviction, each week dedicated to one of the Kubler-Ross stages of grief, also supplies Sigal with a perfect story arc.)

New Yorks Governor Cuomo Continues Pushing for Gay Marriage
Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, has kicked off a state tour to highlight his legislative agenda for 2011.
Marriage equality is one of the priorities, along with a property tax and ethics reform.
The Democrat governor hopes to press people to support his aims and pressure lawmakers about them.
He said in a statement: “Our entire team is going to travel the state to speak directly to New Yorkers about the issues that can move this state forward, and it begins in Syracuse.
“We need to pass a property tax cap, ethics reform, and marriage equality during this legislative session. The clock is ticking, but when the people speak, the politicians will listen. We will assemble a broad coalition of New Yorkers to support this agenda and work tirelessly to get it passed in Albany.”
The Advocate reports that Mr Cuomo’s office has not released further details but judging by past tours, he may reference marriage equality in high-profile speeches and send deputies to speak with LGBT audiences around the state.
Last month, Mr Cuomo told gay rights campaigners he will devote his “full attention” to marriage equality.
Speaking to campaigners in a closed meeting, he reportedly said: “For me, this is personal.”
MEANWHILE It’s unclear whether it will advance through the Assembly (or whether Speaker Sheldon Silver might wait for the Cuomo bill, or whether there’s a switch-a-roo….) but Danny O’Donnell included this sentence after the happy quotes in his press release: “In order to ensure the bill has the time necessary to be taken up by the Assembly before the end of this year’s session, Assembly Member O’Donnell plans to circulate A7600 among his colleagues for co-sponsorship until May 25th.”
We’ll see how the next two weeks go. To me, this indicates something of a rift between legislators who have been championing the bill — O’Donnell and Sen. Tom Duane — and the new lobbying front, with which Cuomo is closely coordinating.

Mondo (from last season Project Runway) is leading the national HIV education campaign Living Positive By Design alongside fellow show alum Jack Mackenroth.
The two will come together for the first time on Sunday, May 15 at the 26th Annual AIDS Walk New York in Central Park, where Mondo will address the anticipated 45,000 attendees and discuss his personal journey with HIV.
Mondo has been HIV-positive for ten years, and since his courageous disclosure of his HIV-positive status on “Project Runway,” has become an advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness. Living Positive By Design is a partnership with Merck, and encourages people living with the disease to maintain a positive outlook on life while working with their doctors to manage their disease.
Through the campaign, Mondo hopes to combat the stigma associated with the disease and share his experience with HIV. He’s also encouraging people living with HIV to work with their doctor to find a treatment regimen that is right for them.

Nick Adams Aids Walk New York Fundraising Efforts
We just saw PRISCILLA on Broadway this week! WOW! What an eye-popping, show-stopping performance! Everyone does a fantastic job, but of course, our heart has always belonged to Nick Adams, since I first saw him onstage in 2005.
We’ll be covering it more in a couple weeks, and catching up with the ever adorable, super-talented Nick Adams with an interview right here at BestGayNewYork.com, in the coming weeks!

William Blake LIVE FROM NEW YORK Returns to Birdland May 2
Can I just say, I have never been a big fan of Karaoke! Although, in New York it can be really good sometimes.
I was in a tiny neighborhood bar the other night having my last call, and some theatre folks were doing Karaoke, practicing their voices and styles. Nothing exciting. In walks William Blake. You may recall, William first appeared on the fourth season of the American Idol as a contestant on the Hollywood stage. He then released his first studio recorded album which entitled “Day Dreamer” in 2005.
So here I am sipping the last of my drink, and THAT VOICE! I almost dropped my drink as I got a front row seat to that magical voice and William belted out several numbers!
Last year, the Carneggie Hall witnessed his debut, singing as a guest vocalist in Standard Time With Michael Feinstein. The Dallas born singer was also featured in the Jim Caruso’s Cast Party in the Town Hall, alongside him are Liza Minelli, Chita Rivera, and many other stars. He also has acting repertoire in his resume. Talk about an upcoming powerhouse!
To celebrate the release of Cavern Records “William Blake: Live from New York,” Jim Caruso is pleased to announce that singer William Blake will return to the Birdland stage, New York, on May 2nd at 7 P.M, where the album itself was recorded on September, last year. Michael Thomas Murray will once again, join with him in this first part of Broadway Birdland concerts.

Jonathan wrote on his Facebook page, “I raised my hand and said, ‘Since I can’t get married or adopt a child in the state of New York, I can’t possibly be an impartial judge of a citizen when I am considered a second class citizen in the eyes of the justice system.’”
“And he got off the case!” reported Village Voice columnist Michael Musto. “And that’s how the new phenomenon of ‘jury duty blocking’ was born.”

He was a special performer at the Broadway Bares: Classic event held to honor the best of the first 20 years of Broadway Bares, recreating Pan from 2007’s “Myth Behavior” and later danced with Vanessa Williams in the opening of Broadway Bares XX: Strip-Opoly. He also appears regularly at events throughout New York City for organizations including the Ali Forney Center and UCP of NYC.
