GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCES Launch of New “I LOVE NY LGBT” Tourism Website

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the launch of a new “I Love NY LGBT
website,
a one-stop tourism portal into all that New York State has to
offer LGBT travelers. The website’s launch comes on the heels of the
Governor’s pledge to grow tourism and jobs in New York State, including
the launch of a new “I Love NY LGBT” initiative. The niche LGBT tourism
segment accounts for approximately $70 billion in tourism spending in
the U.S. every year.

The new website provides
information and suggestions to help LGBT travelers plan their New York
vacations. The campaign is represented by the iconic I LOVE NY logo with
a rainbow colored heart.

“As part of our efforts to boost
the tourism industry in New York, this pride month, we are launching the
“I Love NY LGBT” website to highlight all of what the state has to
offer to the LGBT community,” Governor Cuomo said. “New York State has a
tremendous variety of ‘must see’ destinations for all travelers of
different interests – whether they are wine connoisseurs, history buffs
or outdoor adventurers. The website will be an important tool to help
attract visitors, encourage spending in our communities and create jobs
in the industry. New York has a proud history of welcoming the LGBT
community, and whether you’re planning a weekend trip or a destination
wedding, I encourage all to come explore the Empire State.”

Last month, Governor Cuomo invited
hundreds of tourism experts to Albany to discuss new ways to bring
tourists to every corner of the state. At the conclusion of the Summit,
the Governor Cuomo announced the launch of New York’s largest tourism
campaign in decades, committing nearly $60 million to grow New York
industries, create jobs and attract even more visitors to the Empire
State. Marketing New York State to the LGBT community was a part of the
Governor’s commitment to further growing the job-creating,
revenue-producing tourism industry.

“The LGBT market is of such
immense value to the tourism industry, so New York is to be commended
for launching this cutting-edge niche tourism initiative,” said Cristyne
Nicholas, Chair of the New York State Tourism Advisory Council and
 CEO
of Nicholas & Lence Communications, a New York based strategic
communications firm. “Because so much of LGBT marketing can be done
through free or low-cost avenues, the cost/benefit ratio on this project
is particularly attractive, allowing for a big bang for the buck.”

The new website features topic
pages covering areas such as Arts & Culture, History, Food &
Drink, Shopping, Relaxation, Family Fun, Outdoor Adventure and
Nightlife. There are regional travel highlights, lists of local LGBT
events and resources, and a wedding guide providing tools for same-sex
couples to plan a wedding in New York State.

The larger I LOVE NY LGBT tourism initiative will also be well-represented at New York City’s Pride Parade this Sunday, June 30th,
with marchers donning I LOVE NY rainbow heart t-shirts. There will be
promotional giveaways and a booth at the PRIDE Festival to provide
additional information about locations to visit.

“Many LGBT people, both in and out of state, simply aren’t aware that New York has an I Love Lucymuseum,
more ski slopes than Colorado, 250 wineries, the site where the women’s
rights movement was born, one of the largest outlet shopping centers in
the world, an annual festival celebrating the
Wizard of Oz,
a natural park larger than Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon combined,
some of America’s best-rated beaches and so much more,” said Ross Levi,
Vice President of Marketing Initiatives for Empire State Development,
and the former Executive Director of New York’s statewide LGBT civil
rights organization. “Before selecting their next travel destination, we
want LGBT people to think of all of the world-class vacation
opportunities there are for them right here in New York State.”

Press Conference on Anti Gay Hate Violence in New York…

JUNE 7, 2013, THE BRONX, NY: “The Bronx LGBTQ Center (the “Center”) has gathered you here to announce a series of outreach initiatives to combat the anti-LGBTQ sentiment that begets incidents of hate violence highlighted by recent media reports of thirteen anti-gay attacks in Manhattan since May, as well as let the community know that we are here, and we are here to stay,” Tym Moss, the Center’s president, announced.

“We  are  working  closely  with  the  NEW YORK CITY ANTI-VIOLENCE PROJECT (AVP),  SCAN  NEW YORK, NYS Senator Jose M. Serrano, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., UNION COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER, the BRONX PRIDE COALITION,  IN THE LIFE MINISTRIES,  and the NYPD, all of  whom support our efforts, in developing programs to diminish the ignorance about our LGBTQ communities that results in homophobia, transphobia, and hatred,” Peter C. Frank, the Center’s secretary, stated.
Also in attendance were Chanel Lopez (New York City Anti-Violence Project’s Community-Based Counsel/Advocate), Minister Nakia Alford-Saunders,  Cesar Sanchez  (Bronx Pride Coalition representative),  Cynthia Thompkins, Esq.(founder of WAVE-NYC (women against violence everywhere), president of the 46th precinct community council, activist, and community leader), and Det. Thomas Verni (NYPD LGBT liaisons office). The three victims of hate crimes who were scheduled to speak –  did not appear.
The Center announces  six outreach initiatives to combat anti-LGBTQ sentiment, homophobia, and transphobia:
First, we will bring AVP’s “Friday Community Safety Nights” program to The Bronx starting Friday, June 21.  Second, we will hold monthly town hall meetings, beginning in August.  Third, we are partnering with SCAN-NY’s GLAS program to bring their “Over the Rainbow” panels to The Bronx and some of our Town Halls..
Next is our 2013 Bronx LGBTQ Pride & Health Fair on July 20
Next, we are co-sponsoring self-defense workshops with NYC Council Speaker Quinn’s office that will be held in The Bronx. Finally, we will be sharing information and working on other programs with our partners and sponsors.
“We welcome the input of the community to guide us. Anyone can join our Center as a member and have a voice in our operations. We also want to let our LGBTQ communities know that there is a new center—a new resource—for them,” Moss advised. “Our initiatives will become a fixture in The Bronx for as long as they are needed,” Frank added.
Borough President Diaz proclaimed, “Our LGBT community is filled with hardworking, loving individuals who work each day as teachers, doctors, business men and women to uplift our neighborhoods and help shape the minds of our children. These are individuals who are being judged and harassed by close-minded criminals simply because of how they choose to live their lives. Enough is enough. We need to put a stop to these senseless acts of violence against our brothers and sisters in the LGBT community. We need to educate our communities with outreach programs like the ones being launched by the Bronx LGBTQ Center. The Bronx continues to be a partner in the fight for the human rights of our brothers and sisters in the LGBT community.”
“The LGBT community consists of vibrant, talented and hardworking individuals who are our neighbors, our friends, and our family members. These individuals should be celebrated and respected like all members of our community. It is extremely unfortunate that violent hate crimes targeting the LGBT community still occur. We must continue to work together to prevent and discourage hate crimes and create a safe environment for all members of society regardless of sexual orientation,” Senator Serrano exclaimed.
“AVP will continue working to create safety in all communities across New York City. We want to bring safety to every neighborhood and we encourage everyone to join us,” said  Sharon Stapel,  Executive Director,  New York City Anti-Violence Project, “We also know that people are deeply affected by this violence and AVP is here through our free, confidential, bilingual (English/Spanish) hotline: 212-714-1141.” For more information about AVP’s Community Safety Nights, visit AVP’s web site at

The Bronx LGBTQ Center hopes to begin operating its helpline in the near future. A number has already been reserved for that purpose: 347-LGBT-HLP. Currently, calls to this number are sent directly to voice mail.

New York City to Spend $60 Million on Tourism

DID YOU KNOW?

NYC is the #1 destination of LGBT  travelers?
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the launch of New York’s
largest tourism campaign in decades, committing nearly $60 million to
grow the industry, create jobs and attract even more visitors to the
Empire State.

The Governor’s announcement came at the conclusion of the New York
State Tourism Summit, where hundreds of tourism experts gathered in
Albany to discuss ideas and new ways to bring tourists to every corner
of the state. As the fifth largest employment sector in New York,
tourism supported 714,000 jobs and generated more than $29 billion in
wages in 2012. One out of every 12 jobs in New York is tourism-related.
The more than 202 million international and domestic visitors to the
Empire State last year resulted in $57 billion in direct tourism
spending, and generated $7 billion in state and local taxes.

“New York State has some of the most beautiful tourist attractions in
the world. From the peaks of the Adirondacks to the beaches of Long
Island, no matter what you’re looking for you can find it here,”
Governor Cuomo said. “I want the world to know about these assets, too,
and am committed to making the State a ‘must see’ global destination and
creating new jobs and investments in New York.”

New York City Neighborhoods to Explore

Geographically, New York is a city with 5
boroughs, 59 community districts and hundreds of neighborhoods. In 2010,
the Department of City Planning issued a revised wall map displaying
the neighborhood names and community district boundaries along with
informative statistics on the geographic, demographic and economic
profile of New York City. View the full map (7.25 MB).

NYC & Company, New York City’s official marketing, tourism and partnership organization, has separated the city into  sections/guides and give some tips for each area. Lower Manhattan, Chelsea, Meat Packing District, Hell’s Kitchen, Koreatown, etc. They show the reader choices for accommodations, cultural sights, dining and entertainment, shopping and attractions.

It’s a great resource for tourists, newly transplanted people, or if you have family coming to town, it provides some new idea’s perhaps, that  you did not think of.

Gay Pride New York 2013

HOW COOL IS THAT PHOTO? Such CELEBRATION!

I think it’s pretty hard to beat Gay Pride in New York! 40+ years since the Stonewall Riots…and LOOK how far we have come!

Two Years Following the Passage of New York’s Marriage Equality Act, NYC Remains Nation’s Most Popular LGBT Travel Destination, Attracting Visitors From Around the Globe.
Nearly 2 Million Expected to Attend Flagship Heritage of Pride Events this June.

NYC & Company,
New York City’s official marketing, tourism and partnership
organization, is highlighting several annual gay pride events taking
place throughout the City as the summer travel season begins.
Recognized as the number one LGBT travel destination in the United
States, New York City will be brimming with energy, diversity and
excitement. From the flagship Heritage of Pride events in
Manhattan—where nearly 2 million people are expected to attend—to
the diverse pride events and celebrations happening in the boroughs
outside Manhattan, New York City is the ideal destination for visitors
seeking a unique and festive pride experience.

“New York City is an
iconic destination for LGBT travel, particularly during our annual
Pride Week celebrations,” said George Fertitta, CEO of NYC &
Company. “Following the legalization of same-sex marriage
in New York two years ago, the City remains the most popular gay travel
destination in the United States. We encourage visitors from around the
world to book their travel now and experience the many pride
festivities taking place throughout the five boroughs.”

A full listing of NYC 2013 pride activity can be accessed at nycgo.com/gay.  Highlights of activity taking place throughout
the City, organized by borough, follows:

“After
years of inequality in this country we are finally turning the course
toward receiving full equality. While this won’t be achieved overnight
we
are proud of our community’s accomplishments over the last decade and
look to the future with a positive stance on the state of LGBT rights,”
said Chris Frederick, Managing Director of Heritage of Pride. “With the
Supreme Court deciding on same-sex marriage
days prior to NYC Pride’s largest day we are projecting an increase in
attendance to nearly 2 million individuals and are excited to welcome
the world with open arms.”

New Yorks Dog Poop Problems

WE LOVE OUR DOGS!
But lets face it , dog poop is gross.

It’s hard to imagine eight million people trying to avoid dog refuse on
the streets of New York City on a daily basis. It’s harder not to
imagine New Yorkers from all walks of life picking up after their
canines. Using plastic bags or trendy, mechanized devices, pet owners
have become a unified force in cleaning up the sidewalks of the Big
Apple. We forget that Health Law 1310, which went into effect in 1978,
was the first such legislation to work in a major city, and that the
strange custom of scooping in New York continues to influence
communities around the world. READ THE BOOK – New York’s Poop Scoop Law: Dogs, the Dirt, and Due Process (New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond)

How do you pick up your dogs poop?

Many
dog
owners pick it up with a non-biodegradable plastic bag. They “recycle”
(re-use) one of those plastic bags from the grocery store. They pick up
the poop and throw it away. Those are just about the worst invention EVER!

But then what happens? It gets sent
off somewhere, to live on forever and ever and ever.

You
may not think about it, but chances are if you have a dog you’re creating
excess waste, somewhere. There are approximately 78.2 million owned dogs in the
United States. That’s a lot of poop!

NOW – We have better choice!  A smarter Green solution!

Paul Cannella, the owner of Chicago-based PoopBags.com, created a solution.

Cannella’s PoopBags are 100 percent  TOTALLY biodegradable dog waste bags  —
Made from corn starch and other renewable resources, PoopBags are shelf stable products that will degrade, after use, at the same rate as the core of an apple.

“I used to always run out of bags for my dog, May. I started grabbing extra bags when I could: my Mom would save them for me, I always asked for double-bagging, etc. I started looking for sources on the web and discovered just how bad plastic bags were for the environment.” says Paul.

In 2003, there were very few resources for biodegradable bags — and it remains true today. While many claim to be biodegradable, only a couple actually meet the ASTM D6400 specification, which allows you to legally claim your product is biodegradable.

Check out Poop Bags.com for an assortment of items!

New York City Parking Solutions with new Apps

This is a cool idea!

New York City unveiled an app Tuesday that allows drivers to find available parking spaces and pay for them with smartphones.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg
announced the pilot program to test out the technology, which he said
would help make streets less congested and modernize the payment
process.

“It’s worked elsewhere and we think it will work here,” Mr. Bloomberg
said on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, where the pilot program is slated
to launch. “This is a better technology for everyone. It should lead to
fewer problems, fewer disagreements about whether or not you’ve paid or
haven’t paid.”

Drivers who register on the PayByPhone website can use their iPhones
or BlackBerrys to pay for one of more than 260 parking spaces with
electronic “pucks”
embedded in the streets below them. The disks
transmit a signal to a server that either the space is empty or a driver
has paid to park there.

The PayByPhone app will also send text messages or emails warning
drivers when their time is about to expire and allow them to pay for
more time without walking to the meter. A traffic officer can scan
vehicles’ license plates to see if their time has expired.

Then later this spring, officials said, a second smartphone app will make its
debut, giving drivers and the city near-real-time information about the
probability of finding a parking space on each block.

Gay Pier Dance has a new location in New York

From outside, to inside, now back outside, a new location.
 NYC PRIDE  SAYS….

NYC Pride is thrilled to have found a new home for its famous Dance on
the Pier:     Hudson River Park’s Pier 26 in Tribeca. Dance on the Pier, now
in its 27th year, will again serve as the official closing to NYC Pride
week on Sunday, June 30.

NYC Pride is very excited about the move back to an outdoor venue. While last year’s Dance and
Rapture were a great success and Pier 57 a phenomenal host, producing the event indoors was a detour from
tradition necessitated by the loss of Hudson River Park’s Pier 54. Dancing unabatedly in full view of this great
city is something that many of the events’ attendees have come to love and expect. It is with great pride that
we bring the Dance and Rapture back outside to their rightful place in the sun.

“We wanted this year’s dance events to be more than just memorable; we wanted them to be historic.
With Supreme Court decisions looming and major changes on the horizon, we felt it was our duty to bring
these events back in line with their original intention: to be a celebration of acceptance, love and community,
outdoors, for all to see! We look forward to creating another world-class dance experience that our attendees
will love,” said Chris Frederick, Managing Director of NYC Pride.

“Not only are we thrilled that the event will be back outdoors, but the space is roughly forty feet wider
than our previous outdoor venue. Hudson River Park Trust is currently wrapping up massive renovations on
Pier 26 and it’s still in close proximity to Christopher Street and the many historic locations that are so
important to our community. We are very happy with the move and look forward to a host of future events on
this amazing new pier,” said Mo George, Dance Director of NYC Pride.

Labrador retrievers Number One, Bump the Yorkshire Terrier Down to Number 5

Say it isn’t so! Labrador retrievers pawed their way to the top as the city’s most
popular purebred in 2012, grabbing the No. 1 spot from Yorkshire
terriers.

Yorkies, which have been top dog since 2009, slipped to fifth on the list, said the American Kennel Club.

Yorkies are made for New York City! Small and compact. How the hell can you have a huge dog in the city?? Sure, we have lots of lots of dog parks, but most people live in small-ish dwellings, and a big dog takes up a  lot of space.

I am still all for the Yorkshire Terrier. So read my dog blog dammit!  (LOL)

TINY APARTMENTS = Next Big Thing in Real Estate

In response to skyrocketing rents in New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed a challenge to the city’s best architects: to design a space no bigger than 350 square feet into a comfortable and affordable micro-apartment. NBC’s Stephanie Gosk reports.

New Yorkers are famous for their teeny apartments, but a new trend in
dwelling seeks to transform those tiny spaces into big assets. They’re
called “micro apartments,” and they make a few hundred square feet feel
like over a thousand.

Fold-away beds, moveable walls, and coffee
tables that expand to seat 10 for dinner are just a few of the clever
touches that transform these shoe boxes into veritable mini-mansions.

“The
main idea is to get double, triple, quadruple use from every space,”
Graham Hill, founder of the sustainable living site TreeHugger.com and
the design company Life Edited, told Fair Companies in a video interview.

New York Cities Best Holiday Windows Display

One of my favorite things… Holiday window displays in New York City!
And Bergdorf Goodman ALWAYS delivers! Dubbed The BG Follies of 2012, the windows
were inspired by entertainments such as the Ziegfeld Follies, Vaudeville
revues and Busby Berkeley’s Hollywood musicals of the 1930s.  They’re a
miniature revival of classic Art Deco style, touching upon the fantasy
shows of the time — the solo act, the duo, group performance, novelty
act (starring daredevil dogs) and more.
DAVID HOEY discusses the Windows online.

The BG Follies continue beyond Fifth Avenue, featuring a panoply of
Acts on 57th and 58th Street, as well as at the Men’s Store.  This year
we invite you to Instagram our Holiday Windows with the tag #BGWindows to win a Holiday Windows Prop or print from The Coveteur’s behind-the-scenes trip through our teams’ studios and staging areas.  Our windows will be on display through January 3, and we cannot wait to see how you capture them.

Lord & Taylor has been celebrating the holiday season by decorating their windows for passersby since 1938. Lord & Taylor’s has the most old-fashioned of the holiday windows unveiled this week—appropriate, since they’re commemorating 75 years of December displays. While Bloomingdale’s and Barneys went with non-denominational pop culture themes, Lord & Taylor’s windows are all about Christmas traditions
around the world. They follow Santa Claus as he visits Central Park, a
swanky party (do note the miniature Champagne bottles), and a
lantern-festooned bridge in Asia.

On  Madison Avenue,   Barneys New York’s holiday windows are a must-see. Every year they are hip and stylish, with a nice dose of humor. Some may call Disney World the Happiest Place On Earth.
But around these parts, Barneys New York is just about our happiest
place ever. So why not call it even and join the two together?

Thanks to a few marketing geniuses, Disney and Barneys have come
together and finally unveiled their “Electric Holiday” campaign,
complete with cartoon ads and gorgeous window displays.

Bloomingdale’s holiday windows 2012: Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away

Holiday? Well, they are fanciful. Bloomingdale’s is getting acrobatic this holiday season, with window
displays that depict scenes from Cirque du Soleil’s new cinematic
offering, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away.

Macy’s
displays are inspired by the story of the little girl behind the famous
newspaper column “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Clause”.

This year’s Holiday Windows at Saks
were inspired by the delicate, intricate and fascinating art of the
snowflake. But that’s not all! The brilliant lighting projection
masterminded by the prolific Terron Schaefer, Saks Chief Creative
Office, hosts a dazzling array of animated figure skaters, gorgeous red
ribbons and of course, the famous Saks Yet (he who created the snow!)
onto the venerable Fifth Avenue façade. Watch the 2 minute video!

Miss USA, Olivia Culpo.
The Gala will help raise awareness of NYCLASS’s
fight against the horse carriage industry with event proceeds benefiting
NYCLASS’s efforts to push for an alternative to New York’s horse
carriages.

NYCLASS
continues to work to pass Intro. 86A, legislation that calls for a
phase-out and safe retirement of horse carriages in New York City and
replacing them with the 21st Century “Horseless Carriage”,
electric-powered vehicles styled and constructed to replicate turn of
the century cars. The 14 accidents involving horse carriages this year
alone have resulted in a majority of the city council now in favor of
Intro 86A.

Tickets to “A Night of New York Class” Gala start at $500.  Tables and VIP tickets range from $5,000 to $10,000For more information please call 212-626-6991 or visit NYclass.org/gala.

New York City Nissan Taxi of Tomorrow

The latest version of our city’s only private form of public
transportation—the yellow cab—will be unveiled this week at the 2012 New
York Auto Show.

Can you imagine getting the opinions of taxi drivers, fleet owners,
transportation bureaucrats, the mayor, and the notoriously cranky New
York City public – to vote on A CAB for the city?  That must have been a hot mess! How many languages was the survey offered in?

The Nissan NV200 has been selected to replace the
venerable 13,000  Ford Crown Victoria’s  as the Big Apple’s official cab. This
so-called Taxi of Tomorrow will be unveiled to skeptical residents for
the first time at this week’s New York Auto Show.

VANITY FAIR got the inside scoop and says, “the city’s first purpose-built cab will host myriad bespoke features
calibrated to the distinctive needs of New York’s taxi users.

These
include a standard driver’s navigation system that will preclude ever
again having to explain which numbered streets precede and follow West
17th. HOW GREAT IS THAT??

A panoramic glass roof for staring up at the young men on those
Hollister billboards

A  low-annoyance horn tuned to a frequency that’s
only audible to other cabbies (or so we hope)

 One 12-volt and two USB
charging ports so all your batteries will be as fresh as the scent
inside the cabin

Fuel-economy numbers that double those of the
neolithic Ford

No Hump rear seating and lots of legroom

and antibacterial pleather seats that provide lower
rates of Ebola transmission than most other fabrics.”
