Gaylifenyc.org Covers Gayfestnyc Spring Gala

This past week, our friends at GAY LIFE NYC.org covered the Gayfestnyc Spring Gala.  They captured some great speeches including one from David Mixner, A true hero in our community.

He reminds us, (especially the youngins!) of our journey from the 50’s. A time when most hid in the closet. Mixner tells the stories of horror faced by the GBLT Community in the past, like the fact over 4,000 needless lobotomies were performed on homosexuals.

He tells of the the strives we’ve made and  the people we have lost.  And what we need to do – every GBLT person, friend and parent needs to see this video!

Gaylifenyc.org  also interviews the stars at the Center Dinner Gala, Angela Lanbury and Alan Cumming and  Awardee Broadway Producer, Tom Kirdahy plus  much more. So many great messages about being safe from HIV.

Don’t miss these awesome videos!

“It’s true my disco ball/has some mirrors missing,” admits the narrator of 24-year-old Craig Moreau’s poem “The Grotto, San Francisco.” Whether or not you’re a habitual poetry reader, who can’t relate to admissions of imperfection?

80th Street Mansion for Sale….$90 Million

VERSACE MANSION?
Not quite. The Woolworth Mansion!

Curbed NY reports the digs hit the market today!

Manhattan’s $90 million mansion has officially hit the market. The 35-foot-wide townhouse at 4 East 80th Street, with its 10 bedrooms, 11.5 bathrooms, and 3 kitchens spread over 18,000 square feet, was purchased by late gym mogul Lucille Roberts in 1995 for $6 million, and her family is attempting the resale now with hopes for a slight profit. If those photos aren’t enough, townhouse superbroker Paula Del Nunzio brings all her powers to bear on the brokerbabble, which goes through the history of the landmark house starting with its design by C.P.H. Gilbert for Frank Woolworth’s middle daughter.

Quite the sprawling mansion, to say the least…. a 50-person dining room, a 35-foot-wide library/wet bar/powder room combo on the third floor, a gym, a master suite with two sitting rooms on the fourth floor, and a staff suite.

If Manhattan’s most expensive single residential sale ever was $53 million, and the next most-expensive listing on the market is $72 million, why pay $90 million for this?  Listing agent Del Nunzio says, “While the other great mansions that have come on the market in New York have been shells requiring total renovation, this is the only mansion to be formally available that has been fully renovated in a traditional prewar style. Never before could one acquire such a magnificent building in this condition.”

WOW. When is the open house?

Donald Trump…The Man Who Would Be President says NO to Gays

THE MAN THAT WOULD BE PRESIDENT.

God Help us all!

Donald Trump is shoring up support for a 2012 presidential run after sending an aide to the key election state of Iowa.

Michael Cohen, executive vice-president at the Trump Organization, flew to Des Moines, the state capital, on today, where the first votes in the contest for the Republican nomination will be cast on February 6.

FYI – Trump is not so big on gays. Trump told Greta van Susteren on her talk show last month that though he loves the fact that there are lots of gays and lesbians in New York City, he doesn’t love them enough to allow them to get married (or divorced like he’s been three times).

In an article in the Des Moines Register, Trump not only reiterates his feelings opposition on marriage equality but expanded on those thoughts saying that gays and lesbians should not be allowed to have partner benefits.

“Asked whether he supports allowing same-sex couples to marry, Trump said no. Iowa conservatives have overwhelmingly opposed the 2009 Iowa Supreme Court decision overturning the state’s ban on gay marriage.”

“They should not be able to marry,” he said. But asked whether gay couples should be able access the same benefits as married couples, he said his “attitude on it has not been fully formed. Given a second to think, Trump said on marriage and civil benefits, “As of this moment, I would say no and no.”

“He’s an extreme bigot,” says Allen Roskoff, who was the first openly gay appointed official in New York City and has served under Gov. Mario Cuomo and Mayor David Dinkins, among others.” Roskoff adds: “Not only should gays be furious, we should be boycotting the products of the advertisers on his TV show” – “Celebrity Apprentice,” which premiered Sunday night on NBC-TV “and certainly boycotting his casinos and hotels and apartment buildings.” Noting that Trump recently switched his stance on abortion from pro-choice to pro-life, Roskoff says: “His game plan is to appeal to the extreme right.”

Trump’s daughter Ivanka has attended marriage equality fundraisers.

Stop this insanity!

Mimi Imfurst and XELLE at Therapy March 3rd

Blending the Spice Girls
with a hint of Ke$ha and a little RuPaul, the
ground-breaking new girl group XELLE is poised to take the pop anddance music charts by storm with the debut of the video for their first single “PARTY GIRL”.

After a chance meeting at a karoke party, powerhouse female vocalists JC Cassis and Rony Goffer teamed with drag sensation Mimi Imfurst to create XELLE, a unique girl group for the newish millennium.

Written and produced by Zach Adam, the fun-loving dance floor anthem “PARTY GIRL” is already a favorite amongst nightclub DJs and major market pop radio stations throughout the US. The song has also been
featured on MTV’s The Seven. It is currently available for sale on iTunes. The video will be available on YouTube beginning March 4.

The video, directed by Hilarion Banks and choreographed by Ryan McNally with costumes by Geoffrey Mac was filmed in a single take, without permit (gasp!) on a moving New York City subway train (the N/Q line
in, appropriately, Queens, to be exact).

With 40 extras, strobe lights, confetti cannons, glowsticks, follow spots, dancers and anyone  else who happened to be riding the, XELLE turned the subway train into a moving dance party. In the spirit of NYC’s infamous outlaw parties of the 1990s, the music video is a love letter to NYC nightlife and to party girls everywhere.

TONIGHT!  Thursday March 3rd. 9:30
Join XELLE for a release party at Therapy as the group debuts their first music video for their hit song “Party Girl”

Featuring:  A screening of the documentary “Party Girls,” a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the “Party Girl” video, plus A live performance by XELLE.   The worldwide debut of the music video for “Party Girl”.

Lady Bunny and Friends do Burlesque Tribute

Lady Bunny and friends
are  back this with week
with a parody of
Cher in Burlesque!

Written by and directed by Lady Bunny, and she also stars as “Scare”.

Bunny Says, “Before you rabid fans attack, just wanted to let you know that I am aware that my Cher voice sounds more like Elvis and that unlike me, Cher was never fat.

I love Cher. She’s been putting out quality material for most of my life. Of course, she’s older now and has gone overboard on the surgery so I don’t mind making fun of a genuinely talented performer who has a few quirks. With older glamorpussses like Cher and Dolly Parton, it’s hard to tell whether constant surgeries are their own personal obsession or whether they simply know that their looks are a big part of their appeal and so they MUST correct any signs of aging. As much as we criticize their transformations, we’d be the first to mock them if they developed a turkey neck , jowl or bag which wasn’t instantly sucked out, yanked up or smoothed. It’s a Catch-22 situation.

I’m also a fan of Xtina’s phenomenal voice–when someone can get it through her head that you don’t need to show off and riff on every single note as the producers of her hit Beautiful did. Xtina sings a hauntingly beautiful power ballad in Burlesque which is quite similar to Beautiful with some gorgeous chords. And Christina gives a compelling performance while singing it, I think her “acting” is best suited to selling a song in music videos, which Burlesque is really a string of with a tired storyline binding the whole thing together.”

Beloved downtown NYC clown David Ilku appears in the Stanley Tucci role. In addition to being 1/2 of the ridiculously funny Duelling Bankheads, David is 1/3 of the demented comedy troupe Unitard .
(Unitard on Facebook .)

Versatile Greg Scarnici  plays Christina Hag-uilera to the hilt as well as many other kooky characters.   He’s published an outrageous parody of Madonna’s Sex book called Sex In Drag as well as starred in dozens of youtube videos. His youtube channel is a must see !

A very special thanks to Louie Garay, Kriss and Big Ben from La Escuelita, NYC’s premiere latin dance club which has the best drag stage in town. It was the perfect setting for this madness.

John Epperson aka Lypsinka, talks about BLACK SWAN

John Epperson, known as the fabulous  performer Lypsinka , played the “Jaded Piano Player” in Black Swan.

John writes a post for the Daily Beast this week and says, “We all have our own Black Swan, that creature inside each of us who is waiting to spring its blazing essence on the unsuspecting world. Mine is, indeed, The Fabulous Lypsinka. My White Swan self was—and to some degree still is—a shy, frightened, sensitive sissy boy from the small town of Hazlehurst, Mississippi.

I was not so shy or frightened, however, that I couldn’t work up the courage to apply for a job as rehearsal pianist at American Ballet Theatre soon after I arrived in New York City in 1978. Two years later, I was a member of the company and in the studio with Gelsey Kirkland, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Anthony Dowell, Natalia Makarova, Alicia Alonso, Rudolph Nureyev, Carla Fracci, Margot Fonteyn, Cynthia Gregory, and Sir Kenneth McMillan. In her 1986 memoir,
Dancing on My Grave, Gelsey did not refer to me as the Jaded Piano Player, only “the pianist” who witnessed the heart-wrenching real-life scenes in which she struggled with Baryshnikov, and—perhaps most of all—her own inner Black Swan.

Lypsinka lives the life that glamorous movie legends are supposed to live. But a bit player—even one as important as the rehearsal pianist in a film based on the balletic world—must get up at 5 a.m. in the deepest of winter and take an unglamorous subway ride to the set!

“Most of the scenes I filmed in Black Swan were shot in a very cold studio that couldn’t be warmed because the low hum of the heater was picked up too much by the boom mikes. It was so cold—and Natalie Portman, the movie’s star, was dressed in such flimsy dance clothes—one might wonder how the behind-the-scenes events that have played themselves out in the gossip mills could have come true in such a steamy fashion.”

From New York City Taxi’s to TV…Pedro Andrade

I was in a cab with male model
hottie Pedro Andrade the other day.

Well…sort of.

That sexy Brazilian accent was romancing my ears… from the TV in the  cab.

For the last few years, the host of LXTV’s 1st Look New York , has been  covering all the hot things to see/do in Gotham.

But for this Rio de Janeiro–raised journalist-actor-model, the gig is a dream come true. “I auditioned about six times. It was callback after callback,” says the West Village resident. “But it was worth it. I never really found my passion until I started hosting.”

Pedro was first discovered by famed fashion photographer Mario Testino and traveled the world modeling for the likes of Giorgio Armani before joining LXTV (NBC’s lifestyle network) in ’06. I think perhaps he gained the most national attention for dating  Lance Bass!

These days he is still juggling several tv shows and he is in talks with Gilt Groupe  for some kind of special  partnership and promotion! (Gilt Groupe provides invitation-only access to highly coveted products and experiences at insider prices. Each day, Gilt offers its members a curated selection of merchandise, including apparel, accessories and lifestyle items across the women’s, men’s and children’s categories. In addition, they provide the best in home decor and entertaining essentials, along with luxury travel packages and fantastic offers on local services and experiences. Most sales start at noon ET and last only 36 hours, making Gilt.com an exclusive shopping destination for luxury at up to 70% off.)

Barbara Bush joins prominent Republicans like her mother Laura Bush as well as Dick Cheney and Ted Olson as supporters of marriage equality.

Joey Arias in Concert! First Time Live in New York In Nearly a Decade!

A fixture of New York City’s
vibrant downtown performance scene for 30-plus years, Joey Arias is a bona fide NYC icon.  From his early days at Fiorrucci and performing with his close friend Klaus Nomi, Arias has been an enigmatic figure.  From outrageous performances at Club 57, Jackie 60 and Squeezebox to the now-legendary nights at Bar d’O where he held court with Raven-O and Sherry Vine, Arias distinguished himself with scandalous wit, sleek style and an extraordinary voice evocative of Lady Day yet uniquely his own.

It was no surprise when Arias was tapped by Cirque du Soleil to originate the role of the emcee in their Las Vegas spectacular Zumanity, for which he co-wrote 3 songs.  After 6 years in that role, Arias returned to New York where he became star and co-creator of Arias With a Twist with master puppeteer Basil Twist.  The show was a critical and commercial hit and extended repeatedly for a total of 6 months at HERE Arts Center.  The show has been subsequently presented in Los Angeles and Paris and spawned a “docu-fantasy” film of the same name which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and had itʼs US premiere at the TriBeca Film Festival earlier this year.

Arias has performed worldwide at venues including Carnegie Hall, The Freedom Theatre in London and on a transatlantic world tour into the cabaret clubs of Paris, and Tokyo to Germany and  England.  On film, he has appeared in Mondo New York, Big Top Pee Wee, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, Wigstock – The Movie, Flawless and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.

The Fall cultural season swings into high gear as the legendary Joey Arias  returns with his first concert engagements in New York City in nearly a decade!

Music directed by Ben Allison (Newport Jazz Festival), a rising star on the new jazz scene, and produced by “downtown impresario” Earl Dax (Weimar New York) the concerts will feature Arias’ signature ‘channeling’ of Billie Holiday and other favorites from the Arias oeuvre as well as original songs and a few surprises.  These highly anticipated concerts feature a live band hand-picked by Allison and feature lighting design Ayumu “POE” Saegusa, the highly acclaimed lighting designer for Arias with a Twist.  The stark, dramatic world created for the production is designed to highlight Arias’ distinctive and seductive voice and to highlight the dynamic interplay between Arias, Allison and the band.  Arias says of the concerts, “I’m inviting the audience to dream as I take them back and then to the future.”

Last weeks show sold out – and this weeks  show is almost sold out!

JOEY ARIAS IN CONCERT   with  Music Directed by BEN ALLISON      October  8 and 9
at Abrons Arts Center , 466 Grand Street (at Pitt).

Michael Chase DiMartino Creates Videos Designed to Bring Joy to the Deaf

New York native,
Chase, began performing at a young age. He sang in Carnegie Hall when he was 16. Later, he performed in a play called “Kosher Harry” for which he received rave reviews from the New York Times for his leading role. Now writing and producing his own songs, Chase endeavors to bring communities together through his music.

Michael “Chase” DiMartino is a new breed of Clark Kent. By day, the 26-year-old serves as a sign-language interpreter — translating meetings for a deaf business woman in New York City. By night, the Bay Ridge, Brooklyn native is using his hands — and his moves — for another lofty purpose: To bring the likes of Britney Spears and Lady Gaga to the deaf and hearing-impaired communities through the art of sign language.

After he posted interpretive videos of “Womanizer,” to You Tube,  Britney Spears herself had them posted to her website, bringing DiMartino’s videos over the 700,000-viewer threshold. He’s been asked to interpret Lady Gaga’s sold-out show at Madison Square Garden (check out his sign-language video for “Bad Romance” ). A singer-songwriter and performer in his own rite, Chase has been  showcasing his own original material and, in doing so, hoping to bridge the hearing and deaf communities in a way that has never been done before.

He is quoted, “Can you envision a stadium packed with people –  half of them hearing, and the other half deaf/hard of hearing  – and all of them enjoying the same music? That is my dream.” His first single, Falldown, and his follow-up song, Hard Candy, are both available on iTunes.  His EP is set to release this summer.

With the release of this new video  HARD  CANDY, Chase has discussed a little about his sexuality. He starts off by saying:

Gay? Who me? Not such a big issue to me. I don’t believe music has a gender. It has no sex. The art of music does not differentiate between its gay or straight counterparts. For myself, I identify as gay only because it seems to be the most …easily explained, and also, more readily accepted.

But if I were to break it down, I would say this: ‘I truly believe myself to love a person for who they are. Gender unattached. I believe that if the right female came along, I could fall in love (and have, with women in the past). But as it stands right now, I am in love with one who happens to be a male.’

“After “Womanizer,” there was this shift in my mind, where I no longer wanted to do just that. I wanted to show people who I am, what my voice is, what my influence on music is. That’s why I started to go into the studio and started to write songs with another artist, Adam Joseph . He did the instrumental and we wrote lyrics together.

It’s been just a wonderful time. I have my videos, which are an extension of myself and now I feel like I have my music, which is an extension of myself and it really feels like a baby. I’ve always heard people say that but I never understood it until now. It feels like my baby. I put so much into this — and it’s my emotion. It’s going onto a limb. It’s taking a huge risk.”
