Steven Brinberg IS Barbra Streisand

“When you first hear Steven’s Simply Barbra CD, for the first brief moment, you almost think, ‘My God! Is that really her?’ [Streisand] It’s so captivating! Not only does he have a wonderful take on her — not at all mean-spirited — and this ability to imitate her, he also captures a lot of moments and nuances that are terrific. It was very impressive.”  –  Marvin Hamlisch

Me too!  When I first heard Steven sing Barbra, I was  quite impressed. He was just in Chicago and I had the chance to see and hear him perform live. Steven  is the premier Barbra Streisand impressionist, performing his incredible show, Simply Barbra, to international acclaim both on stage and television (and performing twice with none other than Marvin Hamlisch!) as he pays homage to all that is Streisand!

Steven does not lip-sync his performances but accurately portrays Streisand with his own voice! With over a decade of performing experience, his amazing show has Steven in demand literally worldwide!

Steven conceived Simply Barbra in 1993 at Don’t Tell Mama in New York City, where the show continues to run when he is not touring. The ever-changing show has been seen in London’s West End, The Edinburgh Festival, Atlantic City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Houston, Washington, D.C., New York City, and many other cities both in the United States and around the World!

We chatted briefly in Chicago, then Steven was headed off to Ireland.  His career started quite by accident as he tells  DEEP DISH …”I was performing cabaret shows as myself, and I would sing snippets of other voices – Cher, Katharine Hepburn, Billie Holiday – but my Barbra was the most popular. One day a friend suggested that I do an entire Barbra show, but I was like “I don’t even look like her and I don’t know anything about makeup.” But I finally booked a couple of weeks to perform as Barbra in New York – and the show just took off.”

Singing Streisand is a rarity. “Other than the veteran performer Jim Bailey, I am the only other male Barbra (that I know of) who sings live. Hers is such a unique voice that it is very hard to do properly. I was inspired when in an interview Barbra was asked what she thought of all the men who do her and she said “I wish they’d do me better!” and I thought I am going to be the first one to do her justice and NOT cross my eyes and be mean…I wanted to be flattering to her because I am such a fan…..I have never met Barbra…..but she knows me. Her manager hired me to sing at Donna Karan’s birthday party – and through her stage director, she told me what to say at the party. We almost met when she was at the same play I was – but I lost my nerve to go over to her. She later learned that I was there and said, “Why didn’t he say hello?” But I just wasn’t ready to meet her…”

Steven has been able to see Babs  perform on several occassions – giving him an opportunity to study her up close.
 He tells  Barbra news

“I had a friend in Los Angeles who knew someone who knew someone who could get tickets for the  1986 ONE VOICE  concert. There were only 500 seats and it wasn’t easy. When he said yes, then I had to convince my parents to give me the money… a lot for a kid to spend! Even then, people were saying this might be her last concert. It was well worth it. We were served dinner on her tennis court. I saw Bette, Whoopi, Goldie,Walter Matthau (they must have made up from DOLLY) everyone seemed to be famous except my party. It was amazing to hear her sing live for the first time and think “This is not a record!” You could look in the windows of her houses, but there were portisans and her trailer set up as bathrooms. I used the latter, and saved the pink heart shape soap I found by the sink!

More recently, I was in Australia while  she was  there also, and Marvin got my pianist and I great seats up close (the concert in the rain in Sydney). It was wild. I did my show one night, saw her show the next night, did my show the next night, and people in the audience waved the flashlights they got at her show! I did a lot of TV while I was there and am told that she saw me on one of the shows! I hope it was the one where the lighting was so beautiful (The Bert Show) cause that’s important to me, and to Barbra. The brief scene I have in the new  movie CAMP (after the very end credits) is also lit beautifully. I think she’ll be pleased at how I look as her.”

What’s next for Steven Brinberg?
“Continuing to tour all over the place – and I’m hoping to perform again as myself. My real voice and look are so different than Barbra – but I’m not giving up Barbra. I would just like to be a boy also. I’d love to be a CSI killer and have people go, “Guess what else he does.” “

Catch him in New Jersey ,  July  8th, 2010.  Also follow Simply Barbra on Facebook

Gay List Daily , is a swank e-publication dedicated to making the trendy, gay individual even more trendy and gay. I have been a subscriber for a few months now. “Our diligent staff searches far and wide the worlds of culture and couture, of food and festivities, and anything else that you just absolutely have to know about.”

This week they are launching a recurring feature to explore the favorite spots in the city frequented by gaydored LGBT (or friendly) celebrities, in various categories that make New York the greatest, gayest city in the world. Carson Kressley ,  style-maker, icon, TV personality and down-to-Earth fairy godfather (from his work on How To Look Good Naked to his upcoming judging role on True Beauty), is the first in the series of  Q & A.

So what are Carson’s top picks for New York?

Food
Carson’s choice brunch spot: BG Restaurant at Bergdorf Goodman. I love the old fashioned glamour of eating IN an actual department store. The view of Central Park is a bonus!

Favorite pizza: Two Boots in the West Village.
Favorite restaurant worthy of dressing up for: Monkey Bar – dress to impress (and to get a decent table!).
Favorite dessert: Milkshake from the Shake Shack in Madison Square Park.

Fashion
Favorite vintage shopping: The Garage Flea market in Chelsea. Full of cute design oriented gays and tchotchkes they love: vintage clothes, paintings, and silver.
Favorite off-the-radar menswear boutique: I’m not sure it’s off the radar anymore, but Ina Men in Nolita is the stylist’s secret for both buying and selling top notch gently worn menswear.

Fun
Favorite dance floor: Sigh…there will never be another dance floor like the Roxy but Hiro on a Sunday night is the next best thing!
Favorite dive bar: Barracuda.
Favorite people watching spot: Bryant Park, especially during Fashion Week.
Favorite spot to get away from it all: My roof deck!
Favorite spot to be yourself: At home with friends.

Black Book Mags  take on last night , “It is a triumph of glitz, glam and, more importantly, fun. All the usual and unusual gathered for this 3-ring purpose. We often judge these “fashion fag” events by the familiar faces, the cast of tried and true characters who have shaped this scene for decades. Their presence laid credence and their attendance was often the barometer of success. What I saw yesterday was much better….”

New York Promoter Marc Berkley Dead at 57

NEW YORK CITY
mourns the passing
of  Marc Berkley.

JOE MY GOD
reports Berkley had a heart attack
.

He was 57. Berkley was the co-founder of HX Media, the now-defunct gay publishing company that owned the popular nightlife guide HX Magazine and the LGBT news title The New York Blade.

Berkley  was a  tireless promoter of all-night dance parties, gay culture, and, well, Marc Berkley — always knows where his thrill-seeking crowd wanted to be.

NEW YORK MAGAZINE profiled the famed promoter in 2001 . He talked candidly about his fight with drugs, his magazine projects and his “war” with Giuliani.  “We’re living in Nazi Germany done by Disney right now.”

Over the years, Berkley’s served on his community board, coordinated Heritage of Prides  nineteenth and twentieth anniversaries, and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to gay charities.

He may be gone, but not forgotten…..

Ticked Off Trannies BUZZ Continues at Tribeca Film Festival This Weekend

TICKED OFF TRANNIES
WITH KNIVES

is playing New York City’s
TRIBECA Film Festival this weekend.

A group of transgender women are violently beaten and left for dead. After regaining their consciousness the violated vixens turn deadly divas and with their new-found confidence and courage, slice their way to vengeance.

They say any publicity is GOOD PUBLICITY! For those not paying attention, there’s been quite the firestorm in recent weeks surrounding Dallas filmmaker Israel Luna’s Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives and its inclusion in the Tribeca Film Festival.

Back in March, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation issued a “call to action” that the film be removed from the line-up because: “The film, its title and its marketing misrepresent the lives of transgender women and use grotesque, exploitative depictions of violence against transgender women.” To which Tribeca responded: GLAAD had its chance.

Luna told the Dallas Voice he was “puzzled” by the furor and that the low-budget, shot-in-Dallas-in-18-days film is nothing more than his homage to grindhouse cinema a la Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez: “We were just playing around and someone said I should do this with drag queens. That would be so much fun.”

Did GLAAD even see the film??

Krystal Summers, one of the stars of the comedy, has now weighed in on the debate. In a statement, the actor writes:

I am a transgender woman and one of the lead actors in “Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives.” Our film does not promote hate or violence against transgender women. It is not a documentary, but a work of fiction and a revenge fantasy. I would never partake in a project that made light of the appalling acts of hate that we, as transgender women, encounter nearly every day. I urge you not to judge the film based on a trailer, hearsay or the recent statements from GLAAD, which received a copy of our film in February, and for weeks, supported our filmmakers. In fact, GLAAD representatives advised our film’s producer, director and cast on how to describe our film to people. The transgender community is always asking that people not judge us by our exterior and take the time to look deeper – I hope that you will do the same with our film.

Perhaps the only marketing mistake with the film was using the real names of real victims. The complaints stem from the trailer’s mentioning by name murder victims Angie Zapata and Jorge Mercado. Says Luna in a statement, he did that to bring a “disturbing reality to my film about transgender violence.”

Q Cinema , the gay and lesbian film fest in Fort Worth, announced Ticked-Off Trannies would play there in June — its first screening down here following its Tribeca bow. But it’ll be marketed with a different trailer. The New York Times reported that Luna has deleted the names of the real-life dead: “It seems that the association between their brutal stories and the revenge/thriller content of the film in its entirety, has been difficult to connect,” he says.

I just got back from Dallas, and everyone was buzzing about the film! Israel has been busy doing interviews the last few days in New York. Everyone is New York has been buzzing about the movie!

*On the eve of the world premiere of Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives at the Tribeca Film Festival, director Israel Luna announced Thursday that he would blur out some letters in the controversial film’s title treatment and many marketing materials effectively immediately, a decision reached with input from Academy Award–winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. This was done because the word TRANNY is found so offensive by many.

PFLAG to Give Liza Minnelli an Award

Citing her outstanding contributions as an artist to advancing equality for all, PFLAG National announced that Academy Award®-winning actress and iconic straight ally Liza Minnelli will be honored with the 2010 Straight for Equality in Entertainment award for her lifelong support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people.

The award will be presented at PFLAGs second annual Straight for Equality Awards Gala on May 1 at the New York Marriott Marquis.

Liza Minnelli is the quintessential straight ally. She has been an outspoken supporter of equality for LGBT people for her whole life, and her tremendous and ongoing philanthropy in the fight against AIDS has made her a very public advocate of the many individuals and their families who have been affected by the disease, said Jody M. Huckaby, PFLAG Nationals executive director.

Her enormous talent makes her iconic, and her steadfast support for the LGBT community makes her an ally. We are so honored to be able to present her with the 2010 Straight for Equality in Entertainment Award.

Adam Bouska in New York City for NOH8 Campaign Shoots Blogger Zee Bdr

Photographer ADAM BOUSKA

became a LGBT activist quite by accident. He calls it “accidental activism“. Gosh, he has come a long way in the 6 years we have known him!

We met Adam in 2003.  He was living in the suburbs of Chicago and had just graduated college where he studied Computer Science. Being a photographer myself, I was always on the lookout for fresh new young talent. I met Adam and asked him to pose for me. During the shoot, he confided that Computer Science was not really his passion. And though he was dabbling with modeling, it was the art of photography that really intrigued him.

Shortly afterwords, Adam moved to Southern Californina. We stayed in touch now and then through  MySpace and watched as his young budding career began to blossom.

It didn’t take long and his name was sprouting up everywhere!

In November 2008, Proposition 8 in California happened. California wanted to put a stop to the idea of gay marriage. The defeat of Prop 8 provoked a groundswell of activism within the LGBTQ community and many new political and protest organizations were formed in response to the defeat. It was like Stonewall was happening again!

Adam, his partner Jeff Parshley  and some friends attended the Prop 8 rallies in Los Angeles. Afterwords, they got so emotionally stirred they knew they wanted to do something,  to make some kind of statement. He and a dozen friends went to the store and bought some paints and duct tape, went back to his apartment and shot photos. Using photography as his voice, Adam placed tape over their mouths and painted the now famous NOH8 on their cheeks, and the next day posted their images to MySpace and Facebook, to demonstrate their silent protest. Anyone familiar with Prop 8, have seen his work!

Before he knew it, a dozen more friends wanted to do the same thing . Adam shot more photos and those friends also posted them online. The next month 30 of their friends wanted the same photos! It started to grow exponentially. In the 6 months that followed it exploded and nearly 500 people had been photographed and pictures were flooding the Internet.

Soon celebrities want to join in and show their support. To date, 3,000+ faces have been shot by Adam and his team for the NOH8 Campaign. The campaign began with portraits of everyday Californians from all walks of life and soon rose to include politicians, military personnel, newlyweds, law enforcement, artists, celebrities, and many more.

Cindy McCain, wife of former Presidential candidate Senator John McCain, was even photographed by Adam, speaking out on behalf of gay marriage rights as part of a popular ongoing photo campaign. “Cindy McCain wanted to participate in the campaign to show people that party doesn’t matter – marriage equality isn’t a Republican issue any more than it is a Democratic issue. It’s about human rights, and everybody being treated equally in the eyes of the law that runs and protects this country.”

The NOH8 Campaign has received overwhelming support from around the world, appearing on various local and national news programs and publications. The images are currently being used on various social networking sites to spread the message of equality, predominantly Facebook and Twitter. Eventually the images are expected to be compiled for a large-scale media campaign. The group just shot their 3rd PSA. There has been talks of  billboards, possible calendar, coffee table books and even a documentary.

Just last month the team shot 500 people in 5 hours in New York City. Among them, were one of our favorite New York City gay bloggers ZEE BDR from Z Reveals!

Z knows only too well what fear, hate and silence can breed. Coming from Turkey, he shared his moving story with the guys from I’M FROM DRIFTWOOD.

He was very excited to be photographed by Adam!

Finally!!! I joined to NOH8 campaign. It was time. I’m so proud of being part of this campaign. Photo shoot was very fast. Adam Bouska is a great photographer. He made me feel relaxed. Adam loved my blue flower as soon as he saw. Hello Adam! Join to THE blue flower fan club! I’m so happy to see he was creative with  and turned blue flower into red.

Well! Meghan McCain got her picture!
Of course prominent blogger Z had to have his! –Tee Hee Hee!”

I am still waiting to be a part of your blue flower project, Zee!
Maybe this year sometime!

Adam hopes to tour  more major cities soon, doing more open shoots and spreading the message across the country. “This is much bigger than just  about Prop 8.  And when we win this, when Prop 8 is overturned, and it will be,  we’re not stopping.  It’s about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell….it’s about gay civil rights….it’s about equal rights…it’s about making our silence heard….it’s about the big picture now! And we have only just begun!”  Groups as far away as Germany and  Australia have even started similar campaigns.

Remember when Gay Pride and National Coming Out  day was just once a year? Thanks to the power of Social Media and the interconnectedness of the Internet these days, we can make a statement about who we are and show the world our messages. “Activism needs to be a part of your DAILY LIFE and your lifestyle. Not just once a year.”

THE NOH8 store online  has t-shirts, bumper stickers, tattoos and my favorite, THE BRACELET!

Funds raised by the NOH8 Campaign will be used to continue promoting and raising awareness for Marriage Equality and anti-discrimination on a global level through an educational and interactive media campaign.

New York Artist Keith Haring – Twenty Years Later

KEITH  HARING

was an artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York City street culture of the 1980s.

February 16th, 1990, the pop artist died is  HIV / AIDS related causes at the age of 31. But his art still lives on.

Haring achieved his first public attention with chalk drawings in the subways of New York (see public art). The exhibitions were filmed by the photographer Tseng Kwong Chi.

Around this time, “The Radiant baby” became his symbol. His bold lines, vivid colors, and active figures carry strong messages of life and unity. Starting in 1980, he organized exhibitions in Club 57. He participated in the Times Square Exhibition and drew, for the first time, animals and human faces. In 1981 he sketched his first chalk drawings on black paper and painted plastic, metal and found objects.

By expressing concepts of birth, death, love, sex and war, Haring’s imagery has become a widely recognized visual language of the 20th century. In December 2007, an area of the American Textile Building in the TriBeCa neighborhood of New York City was discovered to contain a painting of Haring’s from 1979. May 4 2008 would have been Haring’s 50th birthday. In June 2008 there was a retrospective exhibition containing 200 pieces of his work (from the collection of Sigrid Wecken) open to the public in Terrassa, Spain.

(Amazing  shot of Keith painting Grace Jones by Douglas Kirkland!)

The Keith Haring Foundation was established in 1989 to assist AIDS-related and children’s charities, and maintains the largest resource of archives on the late artist, Keith Haring.

Haring’s bold lines and active figures carry poignant messages of vitality and unity. His legacy made an impact on late 20th century art and grants us all a vision for the future.

Keith  generously contributed his talents and resources to numerous causes. He conducted art workshops with children, created logos and posters for public service agencies, and produced murals, sculptures, and paintings to benefit health centers and disadvantaged communities. The foundation  continues his philanthropic legacy…indefinitely.

Will the Manhattan Madam Run For the Governor Seat of New York State?

Last Saturday I gave the first political speech of my life. I spoke to the Manhattan Libertarian party and told them I planning a campaign for Governor of New York State.”  stated the Manhattan Madam, Kristin Davis.

” I have not decided whether to seek the Libertarian party nomination or form my own party based on my platform; legalization, regulation and taxation of prostitution, marijuana, and legalizing gay marriage.

When was the last time a candidate put forward this kind of honest, radical platform? When is the last time a politician offered the voters something different than higher taxes, more spending, greater debt and service cuts.”

“I am the one who will be running and putting my name on the ballot. I am the one who will offer New York voters something different. I am the one advocating using our voice to speak out against inequality and the one who is ready to take on the career politicians and expose them for who they really are! I know the politicians and political reporters wont take me seriously at first. Let’s see if they are still laughing when my campaign files three times the number of signatures needed to get on the ballot.

New York voters will have a chance to vote to legalize prostitution, pot and gay marriage next November.

What could be more exciting?”

The Temperamentals…starring Michael Urie from Ugly Betty

Critics hail

The Temperamentals

as intelligent, political, witty, moving, wise, and most importantly, entertaining.

It tells the story of a group of courageous men who joined together to build the Mattachine Society, the first gay rights organization in the United States.  The play features the intimate and complex relationship between Harry Hay and young fashion designer Rudy Gernreich, set against the backdrop of 1950’s Hollywood and the McCarthy era.

“it’s impossible not to be moved” – Time Out New York

“‘Evocative…
The Temperamentals succeeds… the cast is, to a man, excellent” – New York Times

Michael  Urie  is an actor, television producer and director, best known for his portrayal of Marc St. James on the ABC dramedy series Ugly Betty. He joins  The Tempermentals, as Rudy, in New York City this month!

“Temperamental” was code for “homosexual” in the early 1950’s, part of a created language of secret words that gay men used to communicate. The Temperamentals tells the story of two men – the communist Harry Hay and the Viennese refugee and designer Rudi Gernreich – as they fall in love while building the first gay rights organization in the pre-Stonewall United States.
