Hate and Homophobia Against New York Couple

The case of a gay couple assaulted outside New York’s Madison Square Garden in 2013 will be featured on Investigation Discovery’s one-hour special HATE IN AMERICA: premiering nationally on Monday, February 23 at 8/7c.

HATE IN AMERICA features Emmy Award-winning journalist and Al Jazeera anchor, Tony Harris, as he travels to communities torn apart by violence, coming face to face with the victims of modern-day hate to examine the roots of intolerance in America through the lens of three recent hate crimes.

In the documentary, Tony examines the 2013 hate crime in which fashion designer Nick Porto and his then-boyfriend Kevin were called a homophobic slur by a passer-by following a Knicks Game at Manhattan’s Madison Square Garden. Porto confronted the man but was shoved to the ground and suddenly surrounded by a group of men, who pulled him into the street and beat him. He walked away with his life but, intent on not walking away from the issue of hate, Parto posted photos of his bloodied face on Instagram to share his story with the world.

New York Pier 55 Project

GOTHAMIST has the scoop on Pier 55 this week!

A crumbling old Hudson River pier once used by ocean liners like the Lusitania will be torn down and replaced by a 2.7 acre park on the water featuring rolling hills and an outdoor amphitheater. Mayor de Blasio is expected to reveal further details about the park at a press conference this morning, but the Hudson River Park Trust has revealed that the park will be largely financed by a foundation formed by the billionaire couple Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg.

“New York has always reminded me of Venice, so I am happy the time has come to properly honor its waterways,” Diane von Furstenberg said in a statement. “What better than a park on the city’s western bank to rest, watch a sunset or a performance?” The talented producer Scott Rudin, theater directors George Wolfe and Stephen Daldry, and British theater executive Kate Horton will oversee the performance spaces, with Diller pledging to fund cultural events there for 20 years.

Read more and see all the cool pictures!

***UPDATE  2015 –  THIS IS  GOING TO HAPPEN! The project has won unanimous approval from the Hudson River Park Trust on Wednesday and is moving forward!  The next step in Pier55’s development is for the developers to apply for permits from the Army Corps of Engineers and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Construction is expected to begin in 2016.

New Yorks LGBT Center Big Remodel

After undergoing a dramatic $9.2 million dollar renovation, the city and Board of Directors proudly presented the new and improved Center to the community.

Speakers including Executive Director Glennda Testone, New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, New York State Assembly member Deborah Glick, New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer and more sang the praises of The Center and lauded the great work it has done and will continue to do for future generations.

The final speech of the evening was delivered by LGBT icon, Edie Windsor, whose history-making lawsuit forced the Federal Government to recognize same-sex marriage. The octogenarian received a rousing standing ovation and proudly stated that The Center’s new coffee shop bears her name and that of her late wife, Thea Spyer.

Other notable guests, including jewelry designer Alexis Bittar, sipped on celebratory St-Germain cocktails while admiring The Center’s art exhibition, Once Upon a Time and Now, which showcases artworks preserved in the renovation from 1989’s historic The Center Show – a series of site-specific installations commissioned by The Center to mark the 20th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots – along with new works. The exhibit features art from Keith Haring, David LaChapelle, Kenny Scharf among others.  Cocktails served included the signature St-Germain Cocktail (St-Germain, Prosecco and Sparkling Water over ice with a lemon twist) and St-Germain and Champagne. The artisanal French liqueur is a proud supporter of the LGBT community and was thrilled to take part in this momentous occasion.
