Charles Busch August 12th

Tony nominee, Drama Desk Lifetime Achievement honoree and two-time MAC Award winner Charles Busch returns to the Pines with a new show that gets to the essence of this legendary entertainer.  He will be appearing with his long-time musical director/arranger Tom Judson in a unique evening of music and storytelling, both hilarious and poignant. His eclectic songbook ranges from Michel Legrand and Paul Williams to Stephen Sondheim and Kurt Weill.  “Naked and Unafraid” is an opportunity to see this acclaimed performer in a new and fascinating light.
Charles was recently featured in the New York Times!

FOR most of his adult life, Charles Busch, the playwright, actor and drag artist, has lived in one room near Abingdon Square in the West Village.

“I’ve been on this block for 26 years,” said Mr. Busch, who became legendary in New York in the 1980s for Off Broadway plays like “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom” and “Psycho Beach Party,” which he wrote as star vehicles for himself. “My first apartment was around the corner on West 12th Street. When it came time to buy, I only looked at places within a three-block radius. I saw a nice apartment on Fifth Avenue and 11th Street, but it was too far away.”

Now, he has finally traded up by turning his apartment into a duplex. “I persuaded the lady upstairs to leave,” he said ominously, raising an eyebrow in femme fatale fashion.  Check out article and renovations HERE.

Invasion of the Pines..Gay New York / Fire Island

Mascara, Mirth & Mayhem is a collection of photographs taken by renowned photographer Susan Kravitz over the past thirty years at the annual LGBTQ event known as the Invasion of the Pines.

The Invasion of the Pines occurs every July 4th and involves participants from the Fire Island communities of Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines. It began in 1976, when a member of the Cherry Grove community had been refused service in a Pines’ restaurant because he had been dressed in drag. In protest, a small group of Cherry Grove residents cross-dressed and took a water taxi to the Pines on Independence Day of that year, to stand up against this “height of insult” by “invading” their neighboring community. Four decades later, the Invasion has evolved into a uniquely raucous event that joyfully celebrates human rights and freedom of expression by thousands of people, straight and gay.

Kravitz’s photographs capture the rebelliousness, the high camp, and the joy of the Invasion. They are provocative, introspective, sad and funny, and tinged with sexual innuendo. Yet they also reflect another journey, one that gives insight into the LGBTQ movement itself.

From the fearful, AIDS-ridden years of the 1980s and 1990s, to the joyous years of this decade when LGBTQ people are out and proud (and, if they choose, legally married), these Invasion photographs celebrate a day to be free, to be whoever you want to be, and to be gay.

“My photographs are as much about the times I which they were taken as they are about the people who populate them. Ultimately, they are about human rights and freedom of expression seen through the lens of the Invasion.” said Kravitz of her eighty-eight color and black and white photographs.

Susan Kravitz is a social documentarian of daily life. Over the past thirty years she has exhibited her photographs in galleries and museums in the United States and abroad, including China, South Korea, Russia, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and the Czech Republic. Her Cherry Grove photographs were recently featured on the New York Times Lens blog (A Gay Haven on Fire Island) and in the International New York Times, Paris edition.

Louis Falcone’s lawsuit against the NYPD

Gay Staten Island Man To Sue Four NYPD Officers Over Homophobic Beating/ Hate Crime in front of victim’s 66 year old mother.

  • On June 19, 2015, 4 NYPD officers arrived at the Staten Island home of 31 year old Louis Falcone. Mr. Falcone and his brother got into a verbal disagreement and the police showed up about an hour later after Mr. Falcone’s brother had left and all had calmed down.
  • 1 of the 4 police officers entered plaintiff’s home, dragged him outside and then all four police officers forced plaintiff to the ground and beat him.
  • While the beating was taking place the police officers were calling him a “fag” and a “faggot”. Mr. Falcone is openly homosexual. The police officers stomped on plaintiff’s head and on his ankle causing him multiple fractures which required surgery. Mr. Falcone’s face was forced into the mud and he was unable to breathe. When Mr. Falcone was finally able to lift his head from the mud and spit out the mud that had gotten in his mouth one police officer said to the others that they needed to watch out because he was spitting up blood and that “all faggots have AIDS so I’m sure this one does too.” The vicious beating took place in front of the victim’s distraught 66 year old mother.
  • The police officers also threatened to kill Mr. Falcone’s dog “Looch” who was crying at the sight of his owner being beaten.
  • After the beating was over, Mr. Falcone was handcuffed on his front lawn. While in cuffs an ambulance came (Mr. Falcone does not know who called the ambulance) and the cuffs were removed. Mr. Falcone was treated in the emergency room and required two surgeries. Mr. Falcone was never arrested by these police officers for anything and he was never taken to the precinct for any reason whatsoever. The incident was caught on camera by a neighbor across the street.

Best Cookies By Mail

So I agreed to sample some cookies I had never heard of; GIMMEE JIMMYS.

A huge 2# tin arrived last night at 5pm. Visions of Chocolate Chip and decadent brownies danced in my head!

I opened the tin! and there they were! NOT.

Instead, I saw Oatmeal Raisin cookies (probably my least favorite cookie on Earth!) and pretty Chocolate Rugelach. (Rugelach, other spellings: rugelakh, rugulach, rugalach, ruggalach, rogelach, rugalah, rugulah, rugala, is a Jewish pastry of Ashkenazic origin. Traditional rugelach are made in the form of a crescent by rolling a triangle of dough around a filling.)

So I grabbed a rugelach first, since it had chocolate in it. DELICIOUS. Soft, fresh, perfect balance in flavors.

So I thought what the heck, let me try one of these oatmeal raisin cookies. I took a small bit at first….it was sweet and chewy, and pretty darn good. I took a second bigger bite. Wow! I told my partner, who also does not like oatmeal raisin to try one. He did. AND WOW WOW! He agreed, this was one of the BEST COOKIES we had ever had. Over the next 3 hours, I hate to admit, we finished off ALL of the oatmeal raisin cookies and half of the regelach, at which point I demanded we freeze the rest, so that we would stop eating the entire tin.

Come to find out, in 1983, Gimmee Jimmy’s Cookies opened its doors, making spectacular home baked cookies available to the public in simple cookie tins. The founder, Jimmy Libman, was a dedicated businessman, deaf from birth, but never handicapped by the physical obstacles he faced. Jimmy delivered a great product, and word of his great-tasting cookies soon spread through his loyal and satisfied customers.

A few years ago, Jimmy stepped back from the center of the arena and left the responsibility of producing Gimmee Jimmy’s Cookies in the hands of a small team of successors. Today, it is the mission of the talented team to make sure that Gimmee Jimmy’s Cookies no longer remain a secret. “We share our love of cookies, cakes and all things delicious with tens of thousands of sweet-toothed customers, and enjoy bringing the experience of freshly-baked, carefully sourced, expertly crafted baked goods to cookie lovers worldwide.

BOYCOTT Out Hotel and Fire Island Pines Project

WORST  GAY  NEW YORK

Gay men  using Gay Money  to Fund  ANTI  GAY Politics!

  • Boycott Fire Island Pines Establishments (Pavilion, Low Tea, High Tea, Botel, Botel Barracks, Pool Deck, Harbor Club, Blue Whale, Cultured Elephant), Out NYC Hotel, and XL Nightclub after owners hold reception for Senator Ted Cruz.

    FROM HRC’s WEBSITE:

Whether the issue is marriage or protection from discrimination, Sen. Ted Cruz has consistently opposed equality for LGBT Americans. And he’s gone even further, attacking fellow Republicans for marching in pride parades, and using his opposition to marriage to win his first Senate campaign.

imagine an America where gays forever stay second class citizens

Marriage: Ted Cruz led the charge to deny Texas couples marriage equality. In the Senate, he has supported a constitutional amendment that would prevent the federal government from recognizing marriage equality.
Discrimination: Cruz has consistently opposed granting protections to LGBT Americans. Cruz has opposed both local ordinances in Texas that would protect LGBT Americans, and ENDA’s explicit federal workplace protections.

Conversion Therapy: Cruz has refused to speak out against “conversion therapy” that coerces minors into “treatment” that can lead to depression and suicide.

Harmful Rhetoric: Cruz has no problem about using equality as a wedge issue against fellow Republicans – he’s attacked Republicans for appearing in pride parades and suggested that he believes being gay is a “choice.” He even bragged about intervening in a case to stop a civil union.

    Significant Findings on Marriage Equality

Says marriage is between “one man and one woman”

Pledged to introduce Federal Constitutional Amendment opposing marriage equality

Introduced The State Marriage Defense Act (twice) which would cede definition of marriage to states for federal purposes

    Opposed Proposition 8 ruling

Ran for Senate based on his opposition to marriage equality

Bragged about intervening to prevent recognition of civil union

Said people can “vote with their feet” if they don’t like living in a state without marriage equality.

Annual Out-Fit Challenge Mud Run New York Massive Success

LGBT focused 5k mud run, Out-Fit Challenge (http://out-fitchallenge.com), recently thrived in bringing New Yorkers together in support of family equality. The sporting event featured over 15 military style obstacles which included various elements such as mud, water and ice throughout the course. The event drew more than 650 participants who were ready and willing to get muddy for a good cause, including reality star and recording artist Sara Stokes. Sara Stokes is known for her roles in 2006’s “YaDaDa Movie” and the 2002 ABC/MTV music reality series by P. Diddy, “Making the Band”. The Michigan born songstress participated in the mud run to join the fight for LGBT family equality and took pictures with fans.

This year’s event took place on June 21st, 2014 at the Tuxedo Ridge Ski Center, 581 Route 17A West, Tuxedo, New York 10987 from 9 am to 5 pm with race waves beginning every 20 minutes. The LGBT sporting event is now officially sponsored by Jack’d, a top gay men’s chat and dating app available for free on the App Store and Google Play, as well as a NYC Pride Partner for 2014.  Other sponsors include Kind Healthy Snacks, Kellogg School of Management, Equality Florida, Miami Beach Gay Pride and NYC Pride. This year’s New York event charity of choice was the Family Equality Council, which connects supports and represents the LGBT community across the US.

“Our success with Out-Fit Challenge this year surely surpassed our expectations,” begins Founder & CEO of Out-Fit Challenge, Tory Fitzgerald. “We were able to accomplish our mission by uniting our community through fun and competitive means. It’s amazing to watch people who don’t know each other cheering and providing extreme encouragement to one another while completing the 5K course.”

The sporting event featured obstacles such as the “Cherry Picker,” “Is that Mud in Your Pants “and” Hello Sailor”. Once participants reach the finish line they were then welcomed by a lively end of race after party. Out-Fit Challenge premiered with two very successful mud runs in Miami and New York in 2013. For 2014 they expanded their 5K cross-country trails to four cites chosen through a public online voting contest. The next cities on the list for Out-Fit Challenge include Reno, Nevada on September 20, 2014 followed by events in Boston, Massachusetts and San Francisco, California. Apart from putting on mud run sporting events, the organization aims to aid national and local charities that are making a significant difference in the lives of LGBT individuals across the United States such as the Family Equality Council.

ROCHESTER Radio Show Hosts Kimberly and Beck TransPhobic

WOW – how do these people get these jobs??

THIS IS SHOCKING!

98.9 ‘Breakfast Buzz’ morning radio hosts

Kimberly and Beck

are douche bags of the week!

They took the opportunity to unleash a torrent of mockery upon trans people during a sarcastic 12-minute segment in which they cackled about genitalia and insulted a caller who dialed in to tell them how offensive they were.

Some of the choice quotes (although you really must listen to the audio, AFTER THE JUMP…)

“Transgender or gender nonconforming. What the hell does that mean? Like you’re not a woman or a man??

“The dude can look like a lady and the city is going to pay for it!” (cue “Dude Looks Like a Lady” music)

“Does that mean then if women want a boob job they’ll pay for a boob job because that’s only right.”

“The services that will be paid for under the new coverage – gender reassignment surgery, PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING, because you’re probably a NUTJOB to begin with!”

“It’s a slippery slope. Then if some woman can go to a doctor and it’d be proven that she’s got mental issues because her rack’s not big enough then you know what? she deserves a boob job, Right Kimberly? Or she deserves liposuction.”

Call or write the station and urge them to be FIRED.

Sandblast Weekend Moves to Atlantic City!

Sand Blast the Largest Mid-Atlantic Gay Summer Beach Party

Moves to Atlantic City July 18-20

Sand Blast producer Brad Hurtado announced today he is moving Sand Blast, the largest mid-Atlantic summer gay and lesbian beach party, to Atlantic City, New Jersey Friday, July 18 to Sunday, July 20, 2014.

Sand Blast Atlantic City’s lineup includes Friday’s LOST AT SEA Kickoff Party at the Chelsea Host Hotel to welcome guests, Saturday’s 7-hour SAND BLAST BEACH PARTY with popular DJ Joe Gauthreaux presiding over the dance floor alongside the ocean at the Bungalow Beach Bar. The weekend long event continues with a gay beach volleyball tournament and live stage performance on Saturday night at The Claridge Hotel’s theater followed by DEEP BLUE, an all-night dance party helmed by DJ Phil Romano from Barcelona, Spain. Sunday’s RIPTIDE POOL PARTY takes over the stunning pool at HARRAH’s with music by DJ Eddie Martinez, followed Sunday evening by the closing party at Caesars spectacular DUSK Nightclub with music by NYC’s DJ Escape.

In the coming days Sand Blast will be announcing two oceanfront Host Hotels offering extremely attractive room packages for weekend guests starting as low as $170/night for a 3-night stay.   To be among the first to know when Host Hotel rooms go on sale visit SandBlastWeekend.com and enter your email address to receive Sand Blast event announcement

Sand Blast originated in 2002 when a small group of New York City’s gay and lesbian weekend homeowners in Asbury Park, NJ, decided to create a summer beach weekend so they could invite friends to the once thriving destination, with the goal of increasing its popularity. Twelve years later, Sand Blast has grown into the largest mid-Atlantic summer gay and lesbian beach party. The event’s impact on Asbury Park created a thriving historic downtown, a boardwalk lined with shops, beaches packed with visitors and a vibrant and involved gay and lesbian community of over 600 households & thousands of LGBT visitors.

“The popularity of our weekend of events has caused us to outgrow Asbury Park which has been our beloved home since 2002.  Atlantic City with its many hotels, attractions, and party venues was a natural choice, and this move allows us to continue our original mission to introduce our LGBT friends from cities along the east coast to the wonders of the Jersey Shore.  Atlantic City’s airport opens the weekend event to an entirely new audience from New England to Florida.” says Hurtado.

Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian said “We in Atlantic City are excited to host Sand Blast this year,” said Mayor Don Guardian.  “This is a great opportunity for the LGBT community to enjoy our beautiful City, free beaches and amazing hotels.”

New Jersey becomes 14th State for Gay Marriage

…14!!  A New Jersey judge ruled on Friday
that the state must allow same-sex couples to marry, saying that not
doing so deprives them of rights that were guaranteed by the United
States Supreme Court in June.

It is the first time a court has struck down a state’s refusal to
legalize same-sex marriage as a direct result of the Supreme Court
ruling, and with lawsuits pending in other states, it could presage
other successful challenges across the country.
The decision was a rebuff to Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican who vetoed a bill
passed by the Legislature last year that would have allowed same-sex
couples to marry. His office said it would appeal to the state’s highest
court. And he is likely to seek a stay preventing same-sex marriages
from beginning on Oct. 21, as the judge ordered.

Autumn in New York State

A covered bridge
framed by mountainsides awash in brilliant crimsons, oranges and
yellows, bushel baskets of apples, fields of plump pumpkins and corn
mazes carved into the hillsides… many of the most iconic images of
autumn in America seem to have come straight out of  New York State.

Autumn in the Empire State is more than a visual treat. It is also a
season of celebration. The Old English words for harvest (hærfest)
and autumn were the same, and anyone traveling through New York State
during the season quickly understands the connection. Roadside farm
stands, a plethora of farmer’s markets, wine trails and festivals
celebrating the harvesting of products from apples to zucchini make this
a fun and delicious time to explore the state.

It makes sense that harvest season would be cause for celebration in
New York State.  Nearly one fourth of the state’s total land area is
used as farmland and ranks among the nation’s biggest producers
of agricultural products including dairy, fruits, berries, maple syrup,
and a variety of vegetables such as sweet corn and pumpkins.  New York
also ranks third in grape and wine production. Best of all, New York
State food is about quality, not just quantity. The Empire State ranks
among the top states for fine wines and organic farming, and a growing number of highly skilled cheese makers are creating quality, artisanal cheeses here.

What follows is a sampling of the iconic autumn experiences that beckon across the state.

Follow the Foliage. I LOVE NEW YORK’s weekly foliage reports begin September 11 and are updated weekly through early November at iloveny.com/fall.
The site provides a detailed update of foliage conditions across New
York State, including a map charting fall color progress, vantage points
for viewing spectacular foliage, suggested autumn getaways and event
listings. You may also hear highlights of the foliage report by dialing
(800) CALL-NYS.

Some of the best vantage points are from the chair lifts at ski resorts like Peak ‘n Peak in Clymer in the Chautauqua-Allegheny region, especially on October 12-13 and 19-20, when juried crafters and kids’ activities add to the fun, and at Hunter Mountain in Palenville in the Catskills, October 5-6 and 12-13 when Oktoberfest brings the region’s German heritage to life with Old World music and foods.

SANDBLAST is coming….July 19-21 in Asbury Park

SANDBLAST 2013!

ASBURY PARK IGNITES THREE-DAY lGBT

beach party spectacular: SAND BLAST WEEKEND

This summer, thousands of gays and lesbians will converge on the charming and newly popular seaside town of Asbury Park for Sand Blast, the annual LGBT party weekend on the Jersey Shore. Taking place Friday, July 19th thru Sunday, July 21st, this year’s festivities will feature 23 thrilling activities from surfing to guided bike rides, beach dodge ball, a burlesque show, a downtown art gallery walk, two pool parties, nighttime dance extravaganzas and The Beach Party, the weekend’s main soak-in-the-sun event with music by DJs Tony Moran and Hector Fonseca. Over 4,000 people attended last summer’s event.   This summer’s Sand Blast Weekend promises to be even bigger and wetter!

“Bringing the legendary producer and remixer Tony Moran to headline Saturday afternoon’s The Beach Party has been a goal of ours for years”, said Brad Hurtado, event founder & executive producer, at this morning’s announcement.  “As if that’s not enough, securing the super hot Hector Fonseca to spin the first three hours is a double whammy.”

In fact, Sand Blast Weekend will showcase a slew of the hottest DJ talent playing today including Atlantis Cruise favorite DJ Grind whose popularity has skyrocketed in recent months with over a million downloads of his weekly podcast.  Also featured will be NYC favorites Eddie Martinez, Steve Sidewalk, Nando, Corey Craig, James Anthony, Stacy, Mick Hale and Susan Levine.

What makes Sand Blast Weekend different from other gay party weekends is that in addition to its high-energy dance parties, Sand Blast offers many relaxing activities to enjoy.  “Sand Blast is about discovering Asbury Park as a gay-friendly resort community and making it your own,” explains Hurtado. “We want our guests to go off and explore the entire town and boardwalk and enjoy all that this Jewel on the Jersey Shore has to offer. It’s not just a place to come once a year; it’s a destination we hope guests return to again and again. We like to think of Sand Blast Weekend as the Atlantis Cruise of circuit parties, because, like Atlantis, in addition to our roster of main party events, we have tons of fun activities to offer our guests all weekend.”

Weekend passes start at $165. The Saturday-only pass is $110 and the Sand Blast Women’s Pass is $85. The elegant Berkeley Oceanfront is the host hotel for Sand Blast Weekend. 3-night super saver rates start at $240 per night.  2–night  stays start at $289 per night.
