Loisaida Festival and LES History Month

Continuing its commitment to showcase the Lower East Side’s independent and diverse spirit, Loisaida Inc. announced its lineup for the 2015 Loisaida Festival.

The programming includes: Chicano Batman, Calma Carmona, Herencia de Plena, and Papote Jimenez y su Orquesta.

Latin Soul, plena, salsa, psychedelic beats, from east L.A. to Puerto Rico, will all converge in one spot. Beloved actor, and Loisaida’s own, Luis Guzman will host the Festival, which takes place on Sunday May 24th, 2015 from 11:00AM to 5:00PM.

Speaking of the long-standing power of the Festival, Libertad Guerra of Loisaida, Inc. said, “The success of Loisaida Inc. and the Loisaida Festival year after year is a testament of what we can accomplish in our communities. We are moving with full force to reactivate awareness of Latino cultural vitality, heritage and contributions to the Lower East Side while maintaining our footprint in the Downtown area. This year’s programming really captures that irreverent, resilient, ethos that made Loisaida a creative hub for NYC’s Latino community.”

Leading up to the festival Loisaida, Inc. will host two days of activities at its new Center on 710 east 9th Street that will highlight the contributions of the LGBTQ Latin@ community on the Lower East Side. The Friday and Saturday expanded programming, a new element introduced last year, integrates the Festival with LES History Month during the month of May. The programs, Performing Queer Latin@ Loisaida: A Cabaret and Reconstructing Queer Latin@ Loisaida in Cinema, Literature, and Art, will celebrate the often-overlooked cultural contributions of LGTB Queer Latino Loisaida.

On Sunday May 24th, these elements merge into the Festival, where a host of culinary, cultural, artistic and musical experiences will come together under the theme of one neighborhood…an entire community. A Carnival Procession, rare these days in the downtown area, will open the event. Parallel to the main stage programming, the festival also includes a Theater Lab initiative, where diverse Latino, Spanish or bilingual theater companies will present original site-specific pieces.

The revamped Loisaida Festival will capture the meaning the event held in its early days back in the 80s. What may have started as an impromptu community gathering for neighborhood children unable to leave the city during Memorial Day weekend soon became an event to share and celebrate community, Puerto Rican and Latino culture, as well as the social and cultural differences that make Loisaida such a vibrant neighborhood.

Today, with the over 15,000 attendants from all walks of life and ages that congregate at the festival each year, #LoisaidaFest2015 is the landmark event for Latino historical and contemporary contributions to the downtown area, bridging cultural and generational divides.

Schedule of Events and Details:

Friday, May 22, 2015 (8:00PM-10:00PM) – In Performing Queer Latin@ Loisaida: A Cabaret some of New York City’s most legendary Queen Latin@ performance artists pay tribute to Loisaida’s long-standing tradition of LGBTQ Latin@ artistic expression, experimentation, and activism with a one night performance.

Saturday, May 23, 2015 (1:00PM – 5:30PM)  – Reconstructing Queer Latin@ Loisaida in Cinema, Literature, and Art: An event to celebrate the often overlooked contribution of Queer Latin@ artists and activists to the Lower East Side’s rich cultural fabric.

Sunday, May 24, 2015 (11:00AM – 5:00PM – Loisaida Inc. will celebrate the 28th Annual Loisaida Festival, which includes an opening Carnival Procession, Main Stage performances, and a Theater Lab at La Plaza Cultural. Hosted by actor Luis Guzman.

Sting and Patti LuPone Uprising of Love Sept. 15th

UPRISING OF LOVE!

September 15, 2014.

#UprisingofLove

At this unique moment in history, when we are seeing such rapid progress in the fight for equality in the West, we cannot be blind to appalling violations of human rights elsewhere. Today in Russia, Uganda, Nigeria, and elsewhere, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people are facing harassment, abuse, and violence. In some countries, recent laws have deemed homosexuality punishable by death and the situation appears to be getting worse, not better.

THE MISSION:

1.     To raise awareness among the international community of violence, discrimination, and atrocities committed against LGBTI people.

2.     To support LGBTI people and communities in areas where safety and dignity is compromised through funds and solidarity.

3.     To support and collaborate with LGBTI and human rights organizations concerned with these issues.

“Uprising of Love: A Benefit Concert for Global Equality.” The concert, headlined by Broadway diva Patti Lupone and international superstar Sting, falls strategically around the UN General Assembly and Clinton Gobal Initiative and aims to raise awareness about the unfortunate state of affairs for many LGBTI-identified communities around the world.

Proceeds from the event will go to Fueling the Frontlines, Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice’s 3-year, $20 million global LGBTI rights campaign. Find out more and Get Tickets.

Cazwell explores the Selfie picture taking Phenomenon

I personally do not take selfies. And I do not understand the people who do. Constantly.

THE WEEK asked, Why are we so obsessed with selfies and, in particular, the people who take them?

The familiar if dull refrain is that selfies reflect the narcissism
of our age, spurred by the easy sharing capabilities of smartphones and
the cameras they house. Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr provide
potentially far-reaching platforms to broadcast close-ups of our faces,
particularly the ones we deem fit for consumption by others.

Cazwell’s
new track takes aim at all those Instagram over-sharers (you know who
they are) who just can’t stop taking photos of their hot bods.

“It reflects our ever-growing need to be viewed as popular and attractive,” says the gay rapper.

Check out the video directed by up-and-coming Viennese producer Dizzy Bell.

Tony Moran brings DESTINATION experience to XL Nightclub

On Saturday, August 24th, Destination embarks on a
mission to recapture the greatness of the New York City dance floor.

 “I respect
and love all of the Ibiza parties that have been circling the globe with their
events but we are now taking back control of the American dance floor,”
declares Destination founder Tony Moran. “We want everyone to once again
recognize New York City as the party capital of the world!” The high- speed
journey begins at
11pm at NYC’s XL Nightclub (512 W 42nd St) and continues into
the wee morning hours.

Tony Moran will steer the decks, along with Brazilian dj
Gustavo Scorpio in the early hours with nightlife icon Flava hosting and
special live performances by international superstars Kristine W and Vernessa
Mitchell. A particular highlight of the evening will be the integration of music
videos displayed on a video wall customized by Tony and gigantic DNA
installation by Michael Longo of Sound Factory fame over the dance floor,
seamlessly synched to Tony’s original club mixes. Tickets are available now at
www.xlnightclub.com.

“Destination will be about movement, motion,
evolution, sex and sensuality,” explains Moran, a two-time Grammy nominated
remixer/ producer/singer-songwriter and DJ known for remixing popular songs by
Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Madonna and countless others. “I will use the DJ booth
as my laboratory to build new songs and remixes live.”

Destination will offer fans an elaborate NYC
experience with unique party elements that have never been seen anywhere else
in the world. The most notable will be the introduction of Pioneer Pro DJ
technology on the dancefloor, synching Tony’s original club mixes to video.
“The idea is for the visuals to be more than just dancers, performers and
lights,” explains Moran. “These videos will bring the club classics and future
classics to life.”

This is the reason why Destination is taking place
at XL Nightclub.
The venue offered Moran the freedom to bring in extra massive
sound, including $50,000 enhanced sound system exclusively for the night, turbo
charged with state-of-the-art subwoofers, ultra crisp tweeters, and
individually controlled speakers for Tony to create a true 3D sound experience.
Brand new visual enhancements will fill the club to make the magic happen.
“It’s not about the DJ in the booth anymore”, he continues. “It’s about putting
the spotlight on the dance floor and whisking clubbers on a fantastical
excursion of the senses.”

The evening will include special performances by
club superstars Kristine W and Vernessa Mitchell plus the brilliant,
circuit-favorite Flava performing Tony’s Destination XL Anthem.

Kristine and Tony have collaborated together on
several tracks, most recently hitting #1 on the US Billboard club charts with
“Walk Away”. Miss W has been a staple of the New York City nightlife scene for
over fifteen years. Her first single, “Feel What You Want” debuted in
New York City clubs. “Kristine W’s stronger than ever, and it just made total
sense to showcase her newest and greatest at Destination,” says Moran.

It gives him the opportunity to debut his recently
completed remix of Kristine W’s next single, “So Close To Me” with full length
extended video on the Video Wall. “It’s progressive Kristine W,” he continues.
“My remix reshapes her song for the progressive worldwide movement without
abandoning my circuit roots I am especially proud of it.”

Moran will also debut his brand new Vernessa
Mitchell song. Vernessa Mitchell is a gospel recording artist whose vocal
versatility has been heralded by R&B and House audiences. Her uplifting
house songs have charted seven times on the Billboard Dance charts. Hits
include “This Joy”, “Took My Life” (Billboard Club Play Song of the Year in
2004), and “Accept Me”, besides her timeless NYC anthem “Reap (What You Sow).
Moran is especially excited about the new mix as this marks his first
collaboration with the Grammy-nominated vocalist.

 “I’ve always admired Vernessa,”
he says. “I love the message of her songs and of course, that voice! I had been
reaching out to her for months trying to work with her. Miraculously, things
fell into place and it all came together. I’m so proud of my first song with
her.”

Tony Moran aims to launch Destination to other major cities. “We want to ‘Take
It All The Way’”, he says, slyly referencing another new anthem he wrote that
he will debut at Destination. “We’re building on those great Ibiza parties, but
going beyond the circuit sound and creating unique dance events with more of a
New York City thang.”

In the days prior to the event, Moran is releasing
Tony Moran+Deborah Cooper+Deep Influence, “Planet XL (That’s How We Do)” on
Wednesday, August 21; Tony Moran presents Vernessa Mitchell, “Rise!” on
Thursday, August 22; and Tony Moran’s futuristic progressive take on Tony Moran
& Ultra Naté, “Destination” on Friday, August 23.

NYC nightlife fixtures at all the cool events,
Dougie Meyer, Dina Delicious, Roze Black and Mark Nelson, are hosting the event,
and Moran has invited the singers, producers, djs and entertainment industry
giants to the party.

The event is produced by XL in association with
Sugar House and Continuous Cool.

special performance by Tony Award winning
Kinky Boots
star Billy Porter.
I wanted to send you images and a brief recap in hopes you would be able to include it.

Billy arrived with actor
Victor Garber at XL Cabaret around 10pm
and hit the stage not long after in thigh high “kinky” boots (sans
pants). He did a solo live performance that was followed by a contest
with audience members to win 2 tickets to see his Broadway show ‘Kinky
Boots.’
He selected about 7 revelers and judged who had the fiercest walk. Billy was very interactive with the audience and in great spirits. He concluded the night with one additional number.

The Monday Musicals’ (August 19th) will have a special live performance by Broadway’s ‘Lion King’ star
Chondra Profit

Saturday, September 14th, burlesque star Katrina Darling (Kate Middleton’s cousin) will be performing at XL Cabaret, in a special show dubbed ‘God Save the Queens.’

Shanna Sharp Record Release Party April 25th

Shanna Sharp

Often compared to Sara Bareilles and Alanis Morissette, Shanna has been called the
“southern Adele” with her soulful vocals and rich, introspective lyrics.
Raised in Montgomery, Alabama,
Shanna grew up listening to Sarah McLachlan and Jeff Buckley and
developed an affinity for moving songwriting and vocals.

In 1999, Shanna took her shot to live
in New York City with only $200 in her pocket to pursue music and acting.
Once in NYC, she attended Circle In The Square Theatre School and performed
music gigs at popular venues such as Bowery Electric, Roseland Ballroom, Crash
Mansion and The Bitter End.  She later traveled frequently to Europe to
tour between 2002 and 2007.   Since then,
Shanna has settled back in NYC, has toured

Antigone Rising at New Yorks Mercury Lounge April 12th

I hope everyone grabbed TIME magazine this past with 2 historic gay covers!

Have you heard of NY’s Antigone Rising?? One of the band
members, Kristen Ellis-Henderson, is on the  girl cover of Time
Magazine along with her wife Sarah. The issue features “portraits of the
gay marriage revolution” and boldly declares “Gay marriage already
won.”

Antigone Rising has been an all-female force to be reckoned with in
the country rock world since their debut release in 2005. After more
than a decade of relentless touring and critical acclaim, the band
(Kristen Ellis-Henderson, Cathy Henderson, Dena Tauriello, and Nini
Camps) is poised to release a new EP in 2013. The first single is “That Was The Whiskey,” a foot-stomping, rollicking good time co-written by Lori McKenna.

The band is performing on Fri., 4/12 at Mercury Lounge!
