The economy has taken its toll on New York City and Broadway. Many shows have been forced to close. On January 4, Hairspray and eight other Broadway shows closed, and on Sunday, January 11, All My Sons, Gypsy, and Monty Python's Spamalot also finish their Broadway runs.
"Miracles like 'Hairspray' don't happen every day," Harvey Fierstein said from the stage of the Neil Simon Theatre at the curtain call of the show's packed final performance.
Fierstein, who originated the gender-bender role of Edna Turnblad, returned to reprise it for the show's last months on Broadway.
"It's been an adventure and a pleasure," he added. "I hope someday something like this happens to you."
On another note, Patti Lupone let one audience member have it!
As he was caught recording part of her performance!
Of course, someone has sampled her loud demand to remove the person, and it's all over YouTube. (sort of like Streisands SHUT UP). I know it's disrespectful, and I hope no one profited from this rape of theatre. But it is kind of funny, you have to admit....
