My partner and I manage about 15 online magazines/blogs. And we try really hard to stay away from reporting tragedy and negative news. There is so much of the that already out there, why draw more negative energy to it?
However, I just wanted to take a moment and send our prayers out to the family and friends of the Ecuadorean man who was beaten to death near Brooklyn, last week.
The 31-year-old real estate broker was attacked Dec. 7 by four African American men who shouted anti-Latino and anti-gay slurs near their home in Brooklyn. Jose Sucuzhañay and Romel Sucuzhañay, were heading home arm-in-arm after a night of drinking in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. Police believe the brothers were attacked because they were perceived to be gay, although anti-Hispanic slurs were also used during the assault also. The brothers were attacked with a bottle and an aluminum baseball bat.
This is so sad when I hear about things like this. We often forget that we really are not safe. People still hate us. And many times, we forget about that. We feel so out and proud, but many states do not offer us any protection and there are "haters" everywhere. We must still be careful when we are out in public. Be careful when you are out drinking. Especially if you are alone. I know we can't hide in fear of attack. But we must not forget, these things happen. People still hate.
Police are still searching for the assailants. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-577-TIPS, by texting TIP577 to CRIMES, or by going to NYPDCrimeStoppers.com.
