AIDS WALK NEW YORK - May 18th, 2008
Just 4 weeks away!
23rd Annual AIDS Walk New York in Central Park.
And this year, they take a big green step forward!
"As one of the largest, most visible and most diverse public events in New York City, and as a leader among fundraising events of any kind world-wide, we recognize the importance of preserving the environment as we do this important work to eradicate HIV/AIDS," said Craig R. Miller, President of MZA Events and Producer of AIDS Walk New York.
The initiatives include the introduction of Green Walkers (those who opt-out of printed materials and mailings); enhanced venue-recycling for the 45,000-person event; and a growing strategic partnership program between AWNY and environment-focused organizations.
AIDS Walk New York, to be held Sunday, May 18th this year, begins and ends in Central Park and traverses through New York’s Upper West Side on its 10k (6.2 mile) route. Organizers are looking to consume less and recycle more as they support the walkers on their journey. "From product selection, to packing, to distribution, to disposal, we provide more than 250,000 servings of donated food and beverage," said MZA’s Chief Operating Officer, Colin A. Weil: "We’re working with our in-kind sponsors, including PepsiCo, Whole Foods and New York Spring Water, to deliver product via low-resource utilization methods."
He added, "And we’re working with New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the Department of Sanitation and new sponsor 1-800-GOT-JUNK to create a recovery and recycling program on the venue that will yield a significantly higher return of paper, plastic and wood."
